Fulfilling our Promise to Veterans

Hillary knows that once our soldiers have fulfilled their obligation to our country, ourcountry must fulfill its obligation to them and to their families. As First Lady, she calledattention to Gulf War Syndrome, and as Senator she has vowed to make sure it doesn’t happenagain. As the first member of the Senate Armed Services Committee from New York, she hastraveled overseas to witness firsthand the incredible honor and courage of our troops. And in theSenate she has consistently taken a lead role in improving mental health services, access tomedical care, general welfare, and morale of our veterans.

Hillary’s Vision

As President, Hillary will ensure that all of those who have sacrificed on behalf of our countryreceives the help and care they need to heal their wounds. In order to honor this promise, Hillaryhas proposed:

  Guaranteed, mandatory funding of our veteran’s healthcare system, and intensive care forthose suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries;

  Reductions in the level of red tape facing our wounded service members and veterans;  Protections for service members against predatory lending, insurance, and other financial

practices;  Increases in pay and benefits for service members; 

Expansions in the educational benefits for those who have served; and  Help to ensure stability for children who are orphaned as a result of their parent’s service.

Hillary’s Record

In the Senate, Hillary has championed legislation to improve the lives of our veterans and theirfamilies. Hillary’s accomplishments on behalf of veterans include:

  Secured funding for veterans’ hospitals, reductions in prescription drug prices forveterans, and additional support for disabled veterans;

  Created a health tracking system for all active duty personnel and Reservists to ensure

that they receive regular check ups;  Expanded access to military healthcare benefits (TRICARE) for all Guard and Reservemembers whether they are on active duty or not in order to prevent another illness likeGulf War Syndrome;

  Secured protections for our soldiers against unscrupulous financial practices likepredatory lending and insurance scams;

  Passed the Heroes at Home legislation, which helps family members learn to supportloved ones suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), identify ways to help

Guardsmen and Reservists transition back to civilian jobs, and assess the mental healthchallenges – including PTSD – faced by members of the Guard and Reserve;

  Increased the military survivor benefit from $12,000 to $100,000;  Introduced legislation to honor veterans of the Korean War and the Cold War; and  Voted to increase funding for veterans’ medical and mental health needs twenty nine

times.

Hillary has also been a relentless advocate for individual soldiers when they face obstacles withthe Department of Defense or the Veteran’s Administration through her casework program in theSenate. Hillary has advocated on behalf of 3,800 individual soldiers and veterans.
