PRESIDENTS REPORT

' \!'\ ' ~·:"\?_"[{ It is difficult to believe that this is my fourth report since

r·r ... ~~-:1- ~e f<;>rmc:ition of the Hills & District J"unior Australian Football ~j ~ Association.

-t_'-:': < I '\ '":. ~

Season 1978 has been one of consolidation and we did not add any new teams for the first time since our formation. However, I am confident that we will be including more teams in this coming season. This will add to our administ ra tive burden but wi ll strengthen junior football in this part of Sydney.

Certa inly it can be claimed that the performanceP of our teams was the best in our history. Three teams, namely Pennant Hills Under 11, Pennant Hills Under 13 and Baulkham Hills Under 15 played in the Grand Final. We managed to annex one Premiership with the Pennant Hills Under 11 Team repeating their success of 1977. In addition, this team won the Sydney Metropolitan Under 11 Championship.

Congratulations to all of our teams and their coaches on an excellent performance. The strength being displayed in our Association at

_these age levels should provide a firm foundation for the improvement of football at more senior levels in the future.

Our thanks go to the North Shore-Warringah Junior Australian Football Association for their cooperation and a very special mention of their very excellent Grand Final day which was a big success despite the atrocious weather. The standard of football indicated the progress of our great game on the North Shore and in the Hills District. I sincerely hope our two Associations can continue to cooperate to strengthen Junior Football in our Districts.

Financially, we have finished the year with a surplus as have both Pennant Hills and Baulkham Hills Clubs. This has been achieved mainly through the success of our Annual Dinner Dance and our Canteen. My thanks to all of the people who supported our annual social function and to Ernie Holmes for his sterling work in the canteen. Unfortuna te ly, we did not get any cash money by way of support from the Senior Club this year. We are still hopeful of receiving this money and that their support will continue in 1979 as without it we will find it difficult to advance football in the District. The surplus this year was mainly due to the extraordinary results from the canteen ·enhanced by the conduct of the Shell Cup at the Pennant Hills oval. This will not be repeated in 1979 so a considerable amount of revenue will not be available to us.

At this time it is appropriate to thank our hard working Secretary, Jim Reynolds who along with a few other people was the driving force behind the conduct of the Shell Cup. The success of these Championships along with the generally smooth operation of our Association proved how fortunate we were to retain Jim's services again t _his year.

(2)

I also wish to thank those people on my Committee and in the tw0 I Clubs who supported me this year and demonstrated their continu~d faith in my leadership under . some difficult circumstances. I trust that the results we all achieved this year provide suf f ic :il n t evident to silence the critics of my administration. One of the greatest problems in Australian Football in Sydney is the contintous resentment by some people to administrations that are trying to develop football by bringing a more disciplined and orderly app oach to the game. This problem exists at Senior and Junior levels and it is the most self destructive force existing in our game toda1 ·r I sincerely trust that all of those people who love our great garne will rally to support these disciplined administrations. Lack of di scipline and ethics is of course a sickness that provides a r 1 threat to Western Society generally today!

Finally , on a happier note, I would like to wish all of our friEt ds and supporters a very Happy Christmas and a New Year that meets with thei r expectations.

Regards,

B. W. McMahon, President

SECRETARY' S RE PORT

The 1978 season was the fourth for this Association, and the success enjoyed by the two member clubs in this period is gratifying to all mem bers of this Commi ttee .

The season was in gen eral , one of consolidation. Whilst most of the 1977 Execu ti vc were re-elected there were a number of new faces on the Management Committee.

The Aew faces were:-

Barry Larkin Richard Lee · Kevin Hall

Viee-President Assistant Secretary and Registrar Records Officer and Promotions Officer.

It was unfortunate, particularly to me, that Richard Lee moved interstate part way through the season, and had to resign from the Cammi ttee. This was the second year in succession that the two positions concerned had to be handled by the Secretary .

A signifi can t step forward was made this year in that both member clubs become distinct en ti ties, with their own management committees. This enabled the Association to become the' "director" rather than the "organiser".

The Association again thanks the North Shore-Wcirringah Junior Australian Football Association for admitting our two clubs (eight teams) to their competition .

The end of the minor rounds saw two teams from each club in the final series, with three reaching the Grand Finals in the Under lls 13 and 15 grades.

The Pennant Hills Under ll team again won the premie.rship cup, and cong~atulations go from this Association to John Keayes and Paul Cooksey, who coached and managed the successful team.

The Association's· congratulations must go also. to all coaches and managers for the year for their efforts during the season .

Secretary's Repo!t, cont.

1978 saw the introduction by the Sydney Junior Australian Football Council, of a "round-robin 11 series for the Under 11 and Under 13 Association teams. This series was well accepted and organised by all concerned.

OJr Association's Under 11 team became 1978 Sydney Champions by playing the series undefeated, coached and managed by that dynamic team of John Keayes and Paul Cooksey (Pennant Hills).

1 1

Thanks also to our Under 13 representatives who tried their hardest, but had to submit to tougher oppos.i ti on. They were coached and managed by Lyell Mepherson (Baulkham Hills), and Ron Chapman (Penna t Hills).

Asso.ciation teams n.lso performed admirably in the Under 15 and 17 rep re sen ta ti ve series.

The Under 15 (Shell Cup) Metropolitan Trials were held in June, and the following boys represented this Association in the State Selection Trials held in Broken Hill during July.

Tim Bryncs Andrew Buchanan Peter Acheson

(Baulkham Hills) (Pennant Hills) (Pennant Hills)

Unfortunately none were able to win selection in the N .S .W. State Team for the championships, held at Pennant Hills in August. The Association team was coached by Ray Johns (Baulkham Hills) and managed by John Morris (Baulkham Hills).

The Under 17 (Teal Cup) Metropolitan Trials were held in April, State Trials in May with the championships in Adelaide in June .

Three boys from our clubs were selected for the State Trials in Wagga, with Bob Fallon being appointed Assistant Coach.

The boys were:

Andrew Roberts Alan Hartley Greg Prosper

(Baulkham Hills) (Pennant Hills) (Baulk ham Hills)

Again, the boys .were unable to gain State Team selection. Associati on · coach was Bob Fallon (Baulk ham Hills), assisted by Mike Kenny (Penn ci!ln t

Hills).

In all these Association team selections, the Balmain/Ryde team com ~ bined with our two clubs.

Secretary's Report, cont.

The big event for the year was the staging of the Under 15 Shell Cup Australian Carnival at Pennant Hills Oval. The Association assisted the Sydney Junior Australian Football Council in the organisation and running of this Carnival i n August .

The Sydney Junior Australian Football Council was indebted for our assistance, and have passed on their extreme thanks to those involved.

The Canteen operation at Pennant Hills Oval, under the rnanagement of Ernie Holmes, showed a trading profit of $1200, which included approximately $550 from the Shell Cup Carnival.

Thi s was an excellent result from the home matches, considering three Saturdays were washed out.

The onl y social event arranged by the Associatior, this . year was the successful Dinner Dance held at the Dural Country Club in June.

Pennant Hills Aust~all1n Football Club (Seniors) again assisted this ·Association ffoan~ially, and we thank them for this. It is hoped that ~.imilar u.rrangements can be made for future years.

There are a few committee positions that usually go unheralded. They are delegates to the Sydney Junior Australian Football Council and the North Shore-Warringah Junior AustraU.an Football Association. To those concerned (John 11o rris/Jim Reynolds and Paul Cooksey/Kevin Hall) our thanks for attending the meetings involved and for passing on relevant information for our at~ention.

In closing, I must thank all other committee members, club delegates and club secretaries for their assistance during 1978.

As our Annual Meeting is early this year I can now, in this report, wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year .

See you all in 1979.

BAULKHAM HILLS JUNIOR AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL CLUB

It w.as a ·fairly successful year, both on and off the field for season 1978. Our biggest success for the year was gaining of Castle Hill Showgrounds to train, under lights. We mu~t thank Stan Edwards for the work he put in to achieving this end. · ·

Registrations progressed well early and four complete teams were fi~lded at beginning of season.

A Division of Baulkham Hills Sporting Club, we must thank the Club for their various benefits which included - payment of our lighting bill, . payment of recruitment advertising costs and making the club available for meetings, etc. ·

Thanks also to the Hills and District Junior Association for their direction during 1978t especially Secretary, Jim Reynolds for the many duties he has performed on our -behalf and for passing on that neverending array of paperwork!!

Functions and fund-raising ventures for season included -

* Family Day Car Trial and Barbecue early in season

* Major money-raiser for year was ou'r 200's club - tickets at $2 each were re 1 a ti ve ly easy to se 11

* Home game raffles again proved popular - thanks to Val Toy · for organising same each .week and to all those who donated prizes

* Each team conducted their own pie-night function during year to whatever suited their own team

* Rebate from raffle conducted by the Sydney Junior Football Council proved an easy source of revenue - unfortunately not al l raffle tickets were returned - nevertheless $56 was raised ·

* At the recent Orange Blossom Festival procession through Baulkham Hills and Castle Hill we were well represented with a float, depicting aspects of Aussie Rules with boys in club colours. Thanks to those who worked each night of the week before, on_ this venture and to the boys for their participation. 200 promotional leaflets were handed out in progress of procession.

* Presentation Night was a real "winner" with over 200 people in attendance. Each player was presented with a mounted team photo and four major awards were presented to boys in each age group by our invited guests. Supper was delicious; some of the Mums really had been busy baking cakes and thanks to a 11 who donated other i terns, thus a 11 owing us to keep

·:costs at a minimum.

* At the completion of season several of our boys from the under 17's team enjoyed joining together with boys from Pennant Hills in entertaining an under 17's side from Queensland for the weekend. Hills and District were successful in winning the social match and we hope this type of team visiting will be encouraged in future.

As Secretary, I wish to thank a 11 comni ttee members, coaches and Team Managers for their work during 1978.

Special thanks to Our Delegates whose thankless job it is to attend meetings, keeping us well informed of affiliated bodies activities:

Our Treasurer - Va 1 Johns who has. kept our finances in order for the year

Our Club President - John Morris not only for the work he has done for our own Club but as Vice-President of Sydney Footba 11 Council, has kept us we 11 infonned on this 1eve1.

Many new family groups have been welcomed to our Club during the year. We hope to see the boys back next year and look forward to the parents taking a more active part in the running of our Club.

To the boys progressing to Senior Football next year, we wish them all the best with the Pennant Hills Senior Club.

See the rest in 19 79.

Pennant Hills Junior Australian Football Club

The year 1978 has ca r r ied two significant features. The first, the Under 11 team, vic t orious in 1977, again became the 1978 Premiers, defeating Sto Ives in the Grand Final, 3 goals 5 behinds, 23 points to 1 goal 2 behinds) 8 points.

The second concerns the administration of the Club 0

Af t e r being administered by the Hills and District As sociation, this year the Club became complete ly independant and created its own committee under the Chairmanship of Tyler Bensono

The new Committee set itself to the task with vigcur, appointing coaches and managers who were able to carry the four teams through a successful season. Existing Coaches Tyler Benson and John Keays were joir~d by Roger Haggett and Graham Bleus whilst the manager's tasks were handl ed by Mike Kenny, Barry Larkin, Ken Telfer, Ron Chapman and Paul Cooksey. Their efforts were well rewarded by the response provided by the teams.

But most important of all , the boys; and this year we reached greater heights . Over 100 boys registered to play of whom SO were new players, Apart from their premiership win as already reported, the 11 ' s excelled themselves by being undefeated except for a loss to St. Ives in a non-competition points game. In addition , many of the boys were selected in the winning Association team in the Inter Association Competition.

The Under 13 team, although not quite as successful, nevertheless showed that young players, even inexperienced ones, can be moulded into a match winning combination. The team reached the Grand Final going down to an obviously more knowledgeable St . Ives team.

The Under 15 team, although not achieving the success of the two younger teams, exhibited a will to win and· despite defeats, rallied with spirit and enthusiasm in each game playedo Under the expert guidance of their coach, these inexperienced players built a base from which greater things will come next year.

Likewise, the Under 17 team proved that with true sportsmanship, team spirit and solid loyalty to their coach, it was the game of football that counted. Such attitude, even from new players to the game, speaks well for the future, not only for those who remain next year bl!t also those who go on to play in the senior grades.

On 22nd November, the pro tern committee of the Club will conduct the inaugural general meeting at which it is hoped, a constitution will be adopted. On this and together with the solid support of willing workers, the framework of a further successful season will be created.
