HillsDale College recently kicked off its Rebirth of Liberty and Learning Campaign in support of a mission that has remained unchanged since 1844. In that year, the College was founded by men and women who proclaimed themselves “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings resulting from the prevalence of civil and religious liberty and intelligent piety in the land,” and who believed that “the diffusion of sound learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” I invite you to participate in this mission by attending a Hillsdale College Hostel program. Taught by members of the College faculty, Hostel programs address politics, literature, history, economics, and religion. In the summer of 2014, the College will sponsor six Hostel programs on the Hillsdale campus, one at the Rockwell Lake Lodge in scenic northern Michigan, and two—one in April and one in October—at the College’s Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C. Registration information for all Hostel programs is included in this brochure. tHe ameriCan ConstitutionJune 1–7, 2014For 225 years, the American Constitution has served as a blueprint of limited government and a guard of the natural rights proclaimed in the Declaration of Independence. This Hostel will discuss the American Founders’ understanding of constitutionalism, examine the challenge to the Constitution in the years preceding and during the Civil War, explain the attack on the Constitution during the Progressive era, and consider subsequent events that have undermined limited government.

anCient roots oF Western CivilizationJune 1–7, 2014Just as we gain a greater understanding of our personal debts and obligations by tracing our family histories, we deepen our understanding of our political and religious debts and obligations by studying the roots of our civilization. This Hostel will explore Athenian democracy, the Roman Republic and Empire, and the roles of Judaism and Christianity in the development of our Western heritage.

WHat is FreeDom? June 15–21, 2014One of the greatest achievements of Western Civilization is the rise and power of the idea of human freedom. This interdisciplinary Hostel will explore the nature of freedom in politics, religion, economics, and literature.

tHe great Conversation in Western literatureJuly 13–19, 2014Literature reflects and shapes the character of a civilization and of its citizens. Thus Homer was called the “schoolteacher of the Greeks.” Who are the schoolteachers of America, and more generally, of the citizens of the West? This Hostel will present an overview of Western literature, beginning in ancient Greece and Rome and continuing in Renaissance Europe, Elizabethan England, and the United States.

islam anD tHe WestJuly 13–19, 2014As one of the world’s great monotheistic religions, Islam has been worthy of Western notice and study since its inception. In recent years, with the rise of Islamic terrorism and increased Islamic immigration to the West, greater understanding has become an urgent necessity. This Hostel will investigate Islam from historical, religious, political, and artistic perspectives.

Free market eConomiCsJuly 20–26, 2014From the classical liberalism of the American Founders to the critique of socialism by the Austrian school in the 20th century, the principles of property rights and economic liberty have succeeded in creating widespread wealth and unprecedented prosperity. This Hostel will examine these ideas and apply them to current public policy issues.

tHe ameriCan Constitutionaugust 11–14, 2014Held at the College’s Rockwell Lake Lodge in Luther, Michigan, this Hostel combines outstanding lectures and an opportunity to participate in the many leisure activities that the Lodge has to offer. This Hostel will explore America’s founding principles, their relation to the Constitution, the operation of government under the Constitution, the Progressive assault on the Constitution, and government today.
