Hilti. Outperform. Outlast.

Milestones in History

1998:

Hilti launches its new range of

laser positioning tools and

cutting & sanding products into

the market.

2002:

The first electric rock drilling

system to be used for mining.

2004:

into China.

2006:

Hilti announces new corporate

culture programme.

2008:

Hilti GB and Ireland will be

celebrating their 50 years

anniversary during 2008

During 1987 to 1997, Hilti focusedon restructuring and strategy. Whenrestructuring took place in the mid1980’s Hilti watched as productlines developed into their own divi-sions, now responsible for their owndevelopments and marketing.

Hilti wanted to begin emphasis onCustomer Satisfaction, in order toprogress with this Hilti strategicallyembraced the principle of ‘thinkglobally, act locally’, the strategyfocusing on market segmentation, direct sales and distribution.

Hilti also expanded its strategicchannels not just locally but worldwide by consolidating businessinterests in America, Argentina,Brazil and Italy. Hilti also estab-lished sales organisations in Croatiaand Russia.

During 1998, Hilti launched its newrange of laser positioning tools andcutting & sanding products into themarket. During this period Hiltiproudly announce their break-through with AVR (ActiveVibration Reduction). This new sys-tem is incorporated into certain Hiltitools in order to greatly reduce thevibration generated by powerfulhammering mechanisms. WithHealth and Safety playing an impor-tant role in the construction busi-ness, Hilti add even more value totheir range of products with theintroduction of ATC (ActiveTorque Control). ATC system helpsto prevent injury to operators by cut-ting the power of the tool if an oper-ator is not in full control of the tool.

In 2002, innovation and growth forHilti are progressed further whenthe first electric rock drilling systemis launched. The system, used inmining, opens a brand new windowof business opportunity for Hilti.

Hilti focus on their growth as a com-pany and during 2004 they expandin China using a manufacturingplant in Zhanjiang.

Hilti also add more focus onto theirtools by launching its first successfulbreaker equipped with a brushlessmotor; thus giving Hilti the edge on‘longer lifetime, less maintenance’.

Concentrating on ‘Strategy 2000,’Hilti announce their new CorporateCulture Program ‘Our CultureJourney’. The program focuses ondeveloping all Hilti employees at alllevels, including top management. The concept of Culture Journey is toallow individuals to develop on apersonal basis but also as team play-ers. The Corporate Culture Programinvolves a series of tasks that areheld over a 3 to 4 day team camp. The program is developed to aidemployees development and growthwithin the company. The programhelps employees demonstrate Hilti’score values and expand on Hilti’spurpose of creating enthusiastic cus-tomers and building a better future.

Since its founding in 1941, Hilti asseen many of its markets celebratetheir golden anniversaries. As weleave 2007 and enter 2008, it is anexciting time for Hilti GB andIreland as they get ready to marktheir own 50th anniversary.

CEI (Ireland)banks on HiltiBuilding Services

CEI (Ireland) Ltd has been a long-standing customer of Hilti’s power tools, in particular its DX and GXproducts. The business recently utilised Hilti’s MQEelectrical bracket system during an extensive bankrefurbishment programme. Groundbreaker recentlyasked the company Managing Director Derek Byrneabout the projects and assesses Hilti’s involvement.

Our Company carries out a fullrange of electrical, instru-

mentation and communicationinstallation services to the residen-tial, commercial, industrial, pharma-ceutical and institutional sectors.

As a business that’s committed toproviding services of the highestquality, we have used Hilti tools fora number of years. The GX and DXtools are widely used, and duringthis time have generated significantcost savings across the company.

We also use Hilti HUS screws forpanel mounting and putty pads forfireproofing and trunking fasteners. Most recently, we started using the‘MQE’ electrical bracket systemafter becoming convinced of itsbenefits following a demonstrationby Hilti’s Sean O’Sullivan.

We’ve used the product recently ona number of refurbishment and

installation projects for somenational banks, including UlsterBanks and Allied Irish Banks.

One of our primary concerns isreducing our costs, especially interms of labour time to carry outinstallations. We’re also a companythat is open to new ideas and waysof thinking in order to get projectsdone more efficiently and to a high-er standard.

When Hilti’s MQE system wasdemonstrated to us, both ConBuckley, our purchasing manager andEugene Hall, our projects manager, immediately recognised the benefits. They found the product to be excel-lent and in common with other Hiltiproducts - easy to use and practical.

The savings for us came in terms oflabour, particularly as the bracketallow us to run cables at low leveland then lift them into position easi-ly and quickly. This also providesthe added benefit of no torturousheavy cable pulling at high level.Cables aren’t damaged during theprocess and the safety risk is signif-icantly reduced.

As a result of using Hilti’s MQE, weestimate that we’ve enjoyed a 25%saving in terms of labour efficiencyduring first fix cable containmentinstallations.

When we first started work withHilti, we focused on its power toolsas we found each product to be longlasting and easy to use. We werealso very impressed with theirLifetime Service offering.

About three years ago we wereintroduced to their DX powder actu-ated fixing products and followingthis, their gas powered GX system. Both have provided significant ben-efits for us in terms of labour savingcosts. For our employees, they‘ve dra-matically increased productivity too.

Our employees have been delightedwith Hilti. Like us, they believe it’sgood to see manufacturers comingup with alternative solutions thatsignificantly speed up the installa-tion procedures.

Any new products or technology weuse must be beneficial to everybodyand this is certainly the case withHilti’s products. The MQE electri-cal bracket system is definitely aproduct we’ll be using in the future.

Hilti’s big hit forLaddingfordSteelwork Fabrication

Established in 1991,Laddingford EngineeringLtd was formed followingthe merger of two estab-lished firms – TL NewmanEst 1960 and Roger FinnEngineering & FabricationEst 1972. During this timethe business has gonefrom strength to strength- fuelled in part by a closeworking relationship withHilti. This partnershipagain proved highly effective recently whenHilti helped Laddingford successfully complete aproject where it needed a fixing resin capable ofworking at -18°C.Contracts Manager, David Finn explains.

Based in Maidstone in Kent,Laddingford Engineering is one

of the leading providers of steelworkfabrication in the south of England.Serving a diverse range of businesses,we were founded 17 years ago andhave half a century of combined expe-rience in the sector.

We’ve been dealing with Hilti for over10 years now. We were introduced tothe company through recommenda-tion after noticing that more and moreof our customers were specifying Hiltifixings on jobs.

Here at Laddingford, we have a strongtechnical side to our business. Thoughthis can be very challenging, Hilti’sTAS (Technical Advisory Service)provides us with a great deal of assis-tance on a wide range of issues andqueries.

Hilti’s main role involves explainingand providing information on a ream oftechnical issues. In some cases we for-ward this on to our customers, which inturn provide us with an important edgeover our competitors.

We focus mainly on using Hilti’s HITresin system HY 150 and RE 500, butin our fleet we also have Hilti screwguns, angle grinders, combi hammersand a variety of anchor fixings. Weuse a range of Hilti anchor systems, tools and consumables across all ourprojects.

Recently, we had a project that requiredus to use a chemical resin anchor sys-tem in a freezer with temperaturesaround -18°C. We initially tried a resinsystem manufactured by a Hilti com-petitor, however it simply didn’t workas it hardened in the tube at tempera-tures around -6°C.

We discovered Hilti’s HIT resin systemafter speaking to Hilti’s TechnicalAdvisory Service. They were able toprovide all the relevant detail, includingfixing data sheets and COSHH sheets.

We spoke to competitors during thisstage, but none of them were able to pro-vide the same level of relevant information.

As a result, we used Hilti’s HY 150 resinon the project. It met our needs per-fectly and in fact worked just as effec-tively at -18°C as it would have done ifit was being used in warm conditions.

Using Hilti products has enabled us tocomplete jobs far more quickly, withless labour required on site.

Using the Hilti HIT system has alsoreduced down time on site as it’salways ready to use. Having the nextday delivery service is very conven-ient and helps to meet deadlines.

Hilti products always work in the situ-ations that they’ve been designed for.Their forward thinking approachastonishes me as it seems almosteverything has been thought of. Wehave been dealing with Hilti ever sinceand wherever possible, we’ll use themin the future.

Hilti takes storagefirm to new levelBuilding and Construction

We were established in 1983as a storage equipment

and mezzanine floor manufactur-er. We pride ourselves on provid-ing a high quality of service andfrom this we’ve built an impres-sive list of customers, includingGregory Distribution and TheWincanton Group.

We’ve been a customer of Hiltisince we were established almost25 years ago. We originally choseto partner with the business due totheir strong brand, service stan-dards, and reputation for produc-ing reliable tools and consumables.

We were working on premises thatwere due to be leased out to a newtenant. Within the building, 8,000bolts used to hold down storageand racking needed to be upliftedwithin a very limited time period.

Reliability was also crucial. Thesix-week project, which started inthe middle of August, requiredproducts that could perform eighthours a day, six days a week.

We called our Hilti AccountManager, Andre Teasdale, toexplain the details of the contractand our specific requirements.Andre came to visit us on site andafter assessing the situation andanalysing a sample of the basematerial, suggested Hilti’s DD 130diamond system, rig stand, DDVPX vacuum pump and DDB P6core bits.

Once the project had started, werealised that productivity would becrucial, particularly as the originalestimate of 8,000 bolts was incorrect.

The actual number was 11,600 – anincrease of 31%. Andre estimatedthat 46 P6 core bits would berequired. The tools arrived the nextday and Hilti provided on-sitetraining for the operatives.

Our workers were able to makegood progress, successfully com-pleting the project on time. Weestimated the core bits alonewould be £3,220, but due to theoutstanding ability of Hilti’s prod-ucts, we only required 14. Thisreduced our original estimate by£2,240. We were amazed at thelifespan of Hilti core bits with onelasting for over 1,000 holes.

Southwest Storage Equipment hasbeen delighted with the outcome ofthis project. Hilti formed an effec-tive partnership with us and I haveno hesitation in using their productsand services on future projects.

Rapide rapidlyswitch to HiltiInterior Finishing

Our main is business isInterior Finishing and we

are recognised as being one of thefastest growing companies withinthe Interior Finishing sector of theconstruction business. We spe-cialise in working with clients andconsultants in commercial and res-idential sectors. One of our mainbusiness drivers is to remain at thecutting edge of innovation and thisis where our relationship with Hiltibrings benefits to both parties.

The main problem that we hadwas the cost of competitor’srepairs, their costs of replacingbatteries and parts as well as downtime when these problems arebeing rectified. It was importantfor us as a company to overcomesuch problems especially as ourprojects have short and very tightdeadlines that must be met.

It is absolutely critical that pro-duction is rolled out as efficientlyand effectively as possible and wesee the GX 120 as solving severalproblems other tools fail toaddress.

We spoke to Hilti AccountManager Eamon Dillon, who wehave known for several years.

He took the time to show myselfand my project managers theGX 120; giving us a demonstra-tion of how the tool works andinstantly we could see the advan-tages the GX 120 has over thetools we had been using.

The main factor that swung theswitch to Hilti was Hilti LifetimeService, especially the 2 years nocost on gas tools.

The whole package of the GX 120and having a consumable deliverynext day on site was just what weneeded.

The innovative ideas on the GX 120,including its perfectly balanced andlightweight build, its use of a gasgauge that indicates how much gasis left thus not having the tool run-ning out of gas unexpectedly aswell as its many safety featureswere major factors to us.

Yes definitely! We will use TheGX 120 on all of our projects.

On Eamon’s recommendation weordered 20 of the GX 120 toolsand we also ordered 40,000 nails. We have rolled out the GX 120company wide and have a 2 yearagreement for the supply of HiltiGX tools and consumables.

We will complete in excess of£7m of drywall and partition workthis year and our investment in thecutting edge technology the GX 120has, shows our commitment toquality without compromise.

We anticipate the GX 120 willplay a key role in our armoury todeliver consistent results to ourclients of finishing all our workson time, within budget and to thehighest attainable standard.

GrantRail on track at White CityRail Infrastructure Specialist

White City in West London is currently the secondlargest construction project in the UK with a targetcompletion later this year. The redevelopment of thesite will include a new shopping centre, multi-storycar park and new London Underground depot. To support the development, a new transport inter-change is also being constructed with the existingstation undergoing a major refurbishment. Here,Groundbreaker speaks to Mike Bevis and Dom DeConti at Doncaster-based GrantRail to understandtheir firm’s involvement.

The Hilti HRA M22 x 270 RailAnchors complete with cover cap, installed with Hilti’s RE 500injectable resin provided the bestsolution. In addition to the prod-ucts, Colin and the technical teamat Hilti supplied GrantRail withtechnical data and industry inde-pendent reports to support thisspecification.

In addition, some anchor load test-ing was undertaken at PaddockWood prior to the site’s ‘live’ date. This process was crucial as itenabled us to confirm specificloads that could be achieved.

The depot design is predominantlyflat bottom rail fixed directly toconcrete slab track. There are alsosome minor ballasted bullheadtrack sections covering the trappoints and Central Line tie-in.

GrantRail was awarded an£11 million contract to

install 3.7 kilometres of low speedtrack as part of the construction ofWhite City’s new 16 road CentralLine depot.

Communication between GrantRailand Colin Burnikell, Hilti’s railbusiness manager, commenced 12months before the project started.During this point, issues concerningthe suitability of products, manu-facturing, availability, transporta-tion, storage and associated con-sumables were all discussed.

This ongoing dialogue enabledboth companies to fully under-stand the mechanics of what couldbe achieved, while being able toappreciate how working in part-nership would mutually benefitboth organisations.

The direct fix track assembly con-sists of a Getzner base plate, seatedon Sika grout. We secured this tothe concrete slab with Hilti’s HRAM22 x 270 anchors and RE 500resin for the plain line sections.

The fan switch and crossing sec-tions of the track consisted of stan-dard timber base plate assemblies, secured to the track slab. The finalfinish on the concrete slab was +/-5mm, which ensured the tracktolerances for vertical alignmentwas achieved.

The depot was constructed belowground in a concrete box which laybeneath the ongoing constructionof the shopping complex.

This presented a significant chal-lenge as it meant all goods had tobe lowered into the concrete boxwhen required as space was at apremium. These complexitieswere amplified further when the‘roof’ of the depot was installed asnoise and dust issues became evenmore relevant.

In addition, there were some logis-tical challenges on site that neededto be tackled. We also had toensure deliveries were packed in acertain way.

Hilti was able to accommodate allof our requirements. They ensuredall deliveries were palletised, thatthe resin deliveries were shrinkwrapped in specific quantities andthat anchors were delivered sepa-rately in crates of 450.

Once the project was underway,Hilti supported the site personnelwith on-site training and problemsolving. They also organised calloffs to ensure the contract ran assmoothly as possible. The projectwas an outstanding success forGrantRail and this was due to theongoing support received fromour suppliers.

The dangers of a fire can never be under-estimated.This is also the view of Hilti installation systemspecialists. By running tests they have generateda great ability and comprehensive know-how inunderstanding the fire resistance of fasteningsystems for installing building supply systems.Customers in both building construction and civilengineering can profit from this.

By Ursula Trunz

One look is

T his is no everyday experi-ence. “You look through a

window into hell,” says Hilti’sMilan Zuber. “You can only standit for one, maybe two seconds,”adds his colleague Rainer Loose. The short glance in the infernomakes the face glow and can singeeyebrows and hair even though thefire is behind thick glass and strongwalls. This all takes place in a facil-ity at the Hilti DevelopmentCorporation in Kaufering,Germany where the fire resistanceof metal anchors, installation rails, pipe rings and other Hilti productsare tested. Larger testing ovens areoperated by the Institute ofBuilding Materials, ConcreteConstruction and Fire Protection(IBMB) at the TechnicalUniversity of Braunschweig,Germany. These ovens heat up totemperatures greater than 1000degrees centigrade.

The test scenarios simulate reality. In tunnel fires the temperature nearthe fire quickly rises to a scorching1200 degrees. In addition to corro-sion resistance, fire resistance is avery important topic for tunnelbuilders. Tunnel safety issues arealso studied by building construc-

tion engineers and architects.Escape and safety paths must, orshould, meet high technical fire-resistance requirements. A buildingshould be able to be evacuated inno more than 30 minutes. “Firestopjackets or cushions that may blockthe path of flames at cable or pipepenetrations aren’t sufficient tomeet these requirements,” saysRainer Loose matter-of-factly. AtHilti he specialises in technicalrequirements for installation sys-tems, and also clearly points outthat installation systems andanchors having fire-preventingqualities must be used for escapeand rescue paths. “If not, the safetyloop is less than complete.”

To demonstrably complete thisloop, Hilti has become the firstcompany in the construction indus-try to test the behaviour of itsinstallation systems against fire.“For several years we have carriedout fire-related tests, under extremeconditions, according to ISO 834 atthe IBMB and in our own testingovens in Kaufering,” reportsRainer Loose. “We can thereforemake clear statements as thebehaviour of our installation prod-ucts and systems under extreme

fire and heat conditions. The prod-ucts also meet the valid Germanstate guidelines for pipe systems(LAR).” Rainer Loose discussesthe complete security system in thearticle “Ensuring safe escaperoutes” on the next page.

Fire testing also touches on thetopic of tunnel safety. Milan Zuber,a Hilti installation specialist who is

responsible for Eastern Europe, turns first to water instead of fire. When catastrophic rainfall delugedparts of the Czech Republic in2002, 17 metro stations in the cap-ital city of Prague were underwater. “The metro managers wereunder a tremendous amount of timepressure to get the transit system upand running once again.

The fire-resistance test is being prepared. The installation system

is assembled in the oven. After the test, results are documented by

Petr Rojicek of Hilti Czech Republic.

all it takes

But in doing so they also paidattention to fire protection. Newsuspended ceilings had to be ableto hold for 90 minutes in case offire. There is no national or interna-tional code for this, but a team ofHilti specialists from the CzechRepublic remembered the perform-ance guidelines from Germany andthese covered the local require-ments in Prague quite well. Testswere carried out and authorisedspecialists evaluated the results inorder to calculate the specificapplication of Hilti fastening andinstallation products in the Praguemetro stations.”

The cooperation between metromanagers and engineering offices, independent experts and Hilti indeveloping the new safety regula-tions continues today. Local testswere also carried out and Hilti’sCzech Republic unit was able tocount on the support and knowl-edge of the colleagues fromGermany and from Corporate

Headquarters in Liechtenstein.Václav Vanek, who looks after topprojects for Hilti in the CzechRepublic, remembers this verywell. “Thanks to this cooperationthe tests were a success and wecould deliver our fastening andinstallation products on time.” Hiltiinstallation systems have become astandard alternative to welded solu-tions. “Welding takes much moretime than it does to assemble oursystem,” adds Milan Zuber – whoalso points out that these activitiescontinue to improve safety stan-dards.

For additional information please

contact [email protected] or

[email protected].

The metro managers in Prague have set high standards.

New suspended ceilings must maintain in a fire for 90 minutes.

Even the cable runs must have a high degree of fire resistance.

Building corridors that are obviously and clearly marked serve as escape

and rescue routes in case of accidents. If pipes or cable strands are

set in these areas there is generally a suspended ceiling that partitions

these off from the usable space. The suspended ceiling must be certified

as suitable for this type of usage. The task is to prevent the penetration of

smoke and fire, both from the lower to the upper level, where the

installations run, and from the upper to the lower level. In case of a fire in-

volving the building’s technical installation systems above the suspended

ceiling, the installations or parts of the suspended system could deform or

come loose and fall onto the floor space below. The ceiling may be

damaged by this, losing the protective, compartmentalizing affect. It is

therefore paramount that the installation systems and their fastening tech-

nology meet the fire-protection requirements that the escape and rescue

paths are subject to. The protective circle must remain closed.

Steel is a particularly good conductor of heat and, as opposed to concrete,

the individual components have more reticulated properties. Think, for

example, of struts or pipe clamps. These types of elements therefore

acclimate to the local environment temperature very quickly. After only 30

minutes steel may have risen to a temperature of 800 C° and can all but

completely lose its nominal stress within the defined 30-minute target

period. This is why deforming is particularly relevant even if the static sta-

bility of the supporting systems is ensured. This is all the more important

if, as often occurs, there is a limited space between installations and the

suspended ceilings and the concentration of the installations is fairly high.

This is why Hilti has recently concentrated on providing information that

has been backed up by solid testing when it comes to deforming and the

resulting minimum clearance requirements.

The summit – organised byHilti with the Electrical

Contractors’ Association (ECA)and the Heating and VentilatingContractors’ Association (HVCA)– was chaired by Professor RudiKlein, Chief Executive of theSpecialist Engineering Contractors’Group. Over 100 mechanical andelectrical (M&E) contractors turnedup to listen to the experiences ofmain contractors includingShepherd Construction and M&Econtractor Balfour Kilpatrick.

Speaking at the event, Prof Kleinsaid the government should be tak-ing the lead to encourage full sup-ply chain integration as the indus-try’s biggest single client.

The early involvement ofspecialist contractors atdesign stage is the onlyway the industry willdeliver greater efficiencyon construction projects. That was the messagefrom the one-day BuildingServices Summit held atWembley on 24thOctober 2007 to highlight the concerns ofthe £19.3 billion buildingservices industry.

He said: “There’s a lack of team-work, especially at the design stageof the project. Only by insisting onthe early involvement of the entiresupply chain can you get everyoneto take collective ownership of thedesign, cost and risk. Too often thedesign is left to the consultants withno input from the M&E contractor. They’re a critical part of the team, especially when you consideralmost half of the budget of anybuilding relates to building servicesinstallations.

Delivering a keynote speech at theevent, Sir Michael Latham echoedProfessor Klein’s comments. Hesaid: “This industry spends up toseven times as much on litigation as

The target set by the industry is tohave 50% of all projects deliveredby integrated teams by 2007.

Derek Gow, Head of BuildingServices at Hilti, said: “M&E has acritical role to play in delivering theconstruction product but there arechallenges to its continued growthand success.”

We understand that wemust care about ourimpact on the environ-ment but what aboutthe wider picture?

Just as important as ecologicalresponsibility for sustainable

corporate success is the socialdimension. For Hilti, this socialdimension comprises of two ele-ments, which it lives out as a "GreatPlace to Work" and a "Great Citizen."

Thus, on the one hand, the focus ison the employees and their familiesand on the other hand, we take astand on matters of general socialconcern.

In 2006 Hilti signed the UnitedNations Global Compact and thuscommitted itself to supporting theinitiative's ten principles. These setout core values in the areas of envi-ronmental protection, human rights, labour rights and anti-corruption.

At a local level Hilti GB and Irelandare working to develop a program ofgiving something back to the localcommunities in which we operate.

Under the guidance of ourSustainability Manager, Berni Grant,we will continue to build on thiswork throughout 2008.
