Volume 80, Issue 7 July Banner Hilton Baptist Church Dear Friends and Family of Hilton Baptist Church, Several years ago, Eddie Murphy starred in a movie called “A Thousand Words”. The basic premise of the movie is that Jack McCall (Eddie Murphy) is a book agent who has the “gift of gab”. He knows how to use his words to get what he wants even if that means stretching the truth and taking advantage of other people. Jack signs a book deal with a monk-like character and that night a tree magically appears in his back yard. Jack quickly learns that for every word he speaks a leaf will fall off the tree. When all the leaves are gone, Jack’s life will be over. Jack quickly discovers the value of each and every word he says and he learns to choose his words wisely. Throughout the movie we watch as Jack transforms from a self-centered and ego driven busi- nessman to a kind and gentle human being concerned that the words he speaks have meaning and depth. This movie reminds me of a quote I heard a long time ago – “Use them wisely because words have more power than an atom bomb.” When I was in a worship band we sang a song called “Words” and some of the lyrics were “Words can build you up, words can break you down, start a fire in your heart or put it out.” Oh, the power of words! In recent weeks we have learned the power of words, haven’t we? We have learned the power of words spoken and even the power of words left unspoken. A word spoken at the wrong time can start a war, while a word spoken at the right time can bring peace. I think the same is also true for unspoken words; Words not spoken can bring upheaval or they can promote healing. For this article, I think it is appropriate to keep my words limited. Perhaps the fewer the words the better. However, I do leave you with this last thought – “Use them wisely because words have more power than an atom bomb.” Peace and Grace, Dan

Dear Friends and Family of Hilton Baptist Church, Several years ago, Eddie Murphy starred in a movie called “A Thousand Words”. Throughout the movie we watch as Jack transforms from a self-centered and ego driven busi-nessman to a kind and gentle human being concerned that the words he speaks have meaning and depth. However, I do leave you with this last thought –

“Use them wisely because words have more power than an atom bomb.” Peace and Grace, Dan

$ Please remember that we rely on your weekly Tithes & Offerings to pay the church bills. Here are a couple of ways that you can continue to give to the church to help us be able to keep up while we are not gathering in-person for worship…

You can mail your offering to the church office

You can set Hilton Baptist Church up as a “Payee” on your on-line banking register and send the church your contribution through your on-line service provider. To do this you would enter Hilton Baptist Church, 50 Lake Ave., Hilton NY 14468 in your “Payee” infor-mation section. Select you want to pay HBC, enter the amount you want to send us, select the date you want it to be sent and hit your confirm button. If you have an option to use the memo line you can type in there what the check is for (Example: Pledge, OGH, Communion, Etc.)

You may go to our website (hiltonbaptist.org) and scroll down to the bottom of the page and select the “Donate” button and send a payment through PayPal or on your credit card. (There is a small fee to the church for using this option so we actually do not receive the full amount you submit)

If you have any questions about the above options, please call or email Dawn

FROM YOUR HISTORIAN

As highlighted in last month’s Banner, the 100th year Celebration of the Union of the First Baptist Church and the Freewill Baptist Church to become our present day Hilton Baptist Church will most

likely not take place at HBC on the 4th of July due to the church not re-opening until the 19th. A planned, if not late, presentation will still be on the agenda with a full historic display of this

union in the Lloyd Room. Until we can safely gather once more, I am offering a taste of what is in store for the future. Sharon Shideler

She stood behind him gently brushing an earlier journey’s dust from his Sunday meeting jacket. And yes, there were a few cat hairs to dispense with too; why that old stray thought this particular coat was at his feline disposal was a mystery. Old Obadiah was certainly chastised enough whenever he was found cuddled within its folds; should it have been left off the hook and lying about somewhere within the aging cat’s jumping reach.

Her thoughts turned back to her husband standing before the tiny mirror next to the entrance door. She studied the weathered reflection looking back at her exhibiting a bit of fleeting impatience. He was not a man to fuss with his appear-ance and he needed to get quickly on the road. She had heard what some of the town folk whispered when her husband passed by; “He sure is the ugliest man in town.” But their words did not pierce her heart, for she saw the beauty in this man, an inner beauty chiseled by the hands of God Himself. Her husband was a good man and a man of God. Yes, he was a godly man and she loved him and she thanked God for bringing them here. The year was 1831, and his calling was clear.

Kissing his wife good-bye and grabbing a sour apple for Moses, Eli Hannibal exited their Ridge Road home. Eli knew that Moses would be eagerly awaiting his treat before beginning their long journey. Adeptly hoisting himself up on the driver’s board, and giving Moses an encouraging switch from his crop, the two companions headed down the narrow recently groomed dirt road heading to North Parma. The two would eventually work their way to the Freewill Baptist Meeting House in North Parma where Elder Eli Hannibal would open the Lord’s Holy Book and feed the flock gathered within. He and Moses would repeat this journey many, many times during the next seven years before turning over these new servants of God to Elder Stephen Bathrick in the year 1838.

Page 11

Although the preceding narrative is designed to present a day in the life of a traveling preacher, the names, dates, and locations are real and yes, Eli Hannibal was called “the ugliest man in town.” Our roots run deep and wide. Our growth has not always been one blessed with harmony. Many preachers would serve the needs of a growing community. By 1916, it was evident that the two Baptist churches organized in the Village of Hilton were not meeting the needs of their congregations on their own and plans for a union would soon begin.

Four years of negations would pass, but through the efforts of the Reverend George Manter minister of the Freewill Baptist Church and the Reverend Randall Kenyon of the First Baptist Church, a peaceful agreement would be reached. The new joint congregation would now be known as the Hilton Baptist Church. Both the Reverends Manter and Kenyon would step down and Alfred T. Mercer would be called to pastor the new church. And so the story continues, the journey continues, the faithful continue.

The Hilton Baptist Church is a community of

God’s people

Who are committed followers of

Jesus Christ

And who seek to continue His work in the world.

The purpose of our church is to enable people to form a

Spiritual connection with God and

Share the Good News of Jesus Christ

I don't always get the names spelled right - and I certainly don't include "everyone" each month - and I worry that there are some people that I never include. Please let me know if you might like to see your

name on this list - and please, please, please - lift these people and your other loved ones in prayer. Thanks! Jayne ( [email protected], 392-9737 )
