• Himachal Pradesh is blessed with some beautiful hill resorts, adventure sports venue and fascinating villages.

• According to State Tourism Policy 2005, the state aims – “To make tourism the prime engine of economic growth by positioning the state as a leading global destination by the year 2020.”

• The state is endowed with topographic diversity as well as with historical monuments and religious shrines.

• The state tourism department created a new slogan ‘Himachal for all seasons and reasons’ to further attract tourists.

• The government has set a target of 15 million tourists for 2011.

– An estimated 5.03 million domestic and 1.19 million foreigners tourists visited Himachal Pradesh in the first 4 months (January-April 2011).

– It is expected that 3.5 million tourists will visit the state in the peak season of May-June 2011.

‘Himachal for all Seasons and Reasons’

With mercury rising in the plains and schools and colleges closing for vacations,

the number of tourists is bound to surge.

• Key Destination: Prominent tourist destinations are Shimla, Kullu and Manali,

Dharamsala, Dalhousie and Kasauli, located in Kullu, Kangra and Shimla

districts. These 3 districts account for 50% of the total tourist arrivals. In first

quarter of the year 2011:

– Kullu district recorded around 925,000 Indian and foreign tourists.

– Shimla district recorded 1.0 million Indian and foreign tourists.

– Kangra district recorded 715,000 Indian and foreign tourists.

• Transportation: Corporations is running 5 Volvo buses from New Delhi to

Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala stations daily for providing transportations

to the visiting tourists which has brought much relief to them because

of heavy summer rush. Apart from this HPTDC is also offering customized

packages as per the budget and requirement of tourists.

Homestays Scheme in Himachal Pradesh

• Himachal Pradesh Government introduces Home Stay Facilities on the basis of Ministry of Tourism, Government of India “Incredible India Bed and Breakfast scheme in 2008.

• There are around 216 homestays are registered with the state till date.

– Some of the properties are attracting large number of tourists. However, largely still lot of areas are unexplored like Sangla vally.

• Himachal Pradesh Government launched helicopter-taxi service in the state to connect 57 helipads, most of which are located in remote and lesser known regions.

• The government has signed an agreement with three private operators - Sim Sam Airlines, Mesco Airlines and Shiva Airlines - and allowed them to operate heli-taxis on identified routes.

• Dhumal launched the heli-taxi service in Shimla. All the three companies can operate inter-state and intra-state heli-taxi services, of which Mesco Airlines would operate heli-taxis on 19 routes.

• 'The one-way fare between Shimla and Chandigarh has been fixed at Rs.4,500, whereas it would be Rs.7,500 between Shimla and Dharamsala and Rs.6,000 between Shimla and Kullu.
