Dear Friends of Hinsdale Hospital Foundation,

As we send out this message of gratitude to our community of donors, we know you

have already seen the words AMITA Health in print and television ads everywhere. Soon,

this new name will grace the signs outside Adventist Hinsdale Hospital.

The timing of our annual report makes this a perfect vehicle for our Hospital’s CEO

Mike Goebel to tell you about the great promise this name change represents. See

his letter at right. With new names and new relationships at the hospital, it’s good to

remember that Hinsdale Hospital Foundation remains your partner in promoting good

will and philanthropy for our community hospital and hospice – just as we have for

decades past.

• Hinsdale Hospital Foundation itself remains an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit

organization dedicated to promoting good will and philanthropy for our hospital

and hospice. The foundations at the Adventist hospitals and at Alexian are

separate entities, independent from the new health system.

Dedicated funds remain where they intended to be, consistent with the wishes

of our donors, and the foundations continue separate and independent

fundraising activities.

• The AMITA Health model is a good one: it allows our hospital to retain its assets, its

mission, and faith traditions while finding critical cost savings and market strength in

working with Alexian.

What makes this year truly unique is that in many ways, it is like every year in our history

– filled with faith, service, healing, and helping.

In other words, Hinsdale Hospital’s leaves have changed, but the Hospital and Foundation

roots that you’ve helped to grow remain well-nourished and undisturbed. Thank you for

your dedication to the patients and families our hospital serves.

A message to the donors and friends who do so much to support our hospital.

As I write to you we are in the midst of an exciting development for Adventist Hinsdale

Hospital. It’s one I am pleased to share with you, the members of our hospital’s

extended family. This April we announced AMITA Health as the new name of the Joint

Operating Company formed by Adventist Midwest Health (AMH) and Alexian Brothers

Health System (ABHS).

Although this name is new, the values of our community hospital and our parent

organization continue to be the essence of who we are and how we will care for you

long into the future. The dedication and promise that our caregivers show every day to

you, our patients, your families and each other are the deep roots of our new name –

AMITA Health.

AMITA is inspired by words from several languages: friendship in Italian, honesty and

truth in Hebrew, and spiritual light and boundlessness in Hindi. Those words speak to

our core values of friendship, truth, and mutual respect for all, as well as our faith-

based call to healing.

We are now AMITA Health Adventist Hinsdale Hospital – a new leaf growing on the

strong roots you help us to nurture. Thank you for joining in our sacred mission of truth

and friendship in extending the healing ministry of Christ.

The Moyer Foundation of Seattle selected

Adventist St. Thomas Hospice to manage its Chicago area

Camp Erin for bereaved youth. Funded by a $100,000

grant, payable over ten years, our counselors welcomed

children and teens last October and are gearing up for

this summer’s session. How do we measure the success of

our first Camp Erin? Campers who didn’t want to come

at all were claiming their spot for the next year, and

campers who started out scared were confident enough

to say, “When I grow up I want to work at Camp Erin.”

To supplement The Moyer Foundation’s grant, Hinsdale Hospital Foundation and our hospice staff work with community donors to keep our bereavement camps – Camp Erin (overnight camp) and Tommy’s Kids Camp (weeklong camp) – going strong.

Truly generosity heals. When baby James was

transferred to the Hinsdale Hospital Neonatal Intensive

Care Unit shortly after his birth, his parents were grateful

for his care and wanted to thank the hospital for its

work. To replenish the blood needed during his stay,

James Koehler’s family organized a community blood

drive. “What the Koehler’s created was a wonderful

celebration of life,” said Cindy Wolfer, RN, DNS, HP.

Wolfer is the regional nurse manager for the Adventist

Lab Partners Blood Center. “Once you’ve been through

an experience like they had, you come to realize that

blood truly is Life.” Celebrating life and honoring both

James and our hospital, a steady stream of donors

arrived at the blood center that Friday in April 2014.

This successful event was soon followed by other grateful patients’ blood drives. Financial gifts from donors have also supported the work of our blood center.

... It was the year Adventist St. Thomas Hospice spent the night in the woods.

Robin Alvarado, a nurse manager at Adventist

Hinsdale Hospital, received the first ever Nurse of

the Year Award by Press Ganey, the industry’s leader

in measuring, understanding and improving patient

experience. The award recognizes the contributions of

an outstanding direct-care nurse who has demonstrated

commitment to innovation and collaboration to create

an exceptional patient experience. Robin ensures that

we provide compassionate care to every patient in

her unit. The unit now consistently ranks in the 90th

percentile or better for patient satisfaction.

Robin Alvarado contributes on even more levels – she’s a longtime donor herself! We thank her and the hundreds of staff members whose personal gifts support innovation in nursing.

Let’s set the scene: A warm summer evening last

June... Elected officials, hospital leaders, a staff choir,

physicians, dedicated donors, and community members ...

Long handled ceremonial shovels tied with green ribbon

... Orange fences, bulldozers, and high mounds of dirt

around a very large hole.

That was our Adventist Cancer Institute and Outpatient

Center ground breaking where all were welcomed to

celebrate the new enterprise with a ceremonial dig in

the dirt.

The cancer center is more than halfway to completion now, thanks to the hard work of all involved and the generous support of over 1,000 donors. You are helping the Foundation reach its $12 million commitment to funding the project.

... It was the year a Hinsdale robin shined in the national spotlight.

2014 was more than our hospital’s 110th year...

... It was the year that hospital leaders joined the community to play in the dirt.

... It was the year baby James celebrated his birthday with a blood drive.

a great ally in a Adventist Hinsdale Hospital diabetes efforts which the American Association of Diabetes Educators has named an accredited diabetes education program. Recognition of our Diabetes Self-Management Education program is timely, given the rising adult diabetes rate in DuPage County which now stands at over 7%.

Only seven percent of the nation’s hospitals

have earned the respected Magnet designation for quality

patient care, nursing excellence and innovation in professional

nursing practice from the American Nurses Credentialing Center

(ANCC). And we are one of them! This recognition was many

years in the making, but the final application was completed in

2014 and our Magnet status was awarded in April 2015.

To be a Magnet hospital means that we deliver the very best

care for our patients and we provide opportunities for every

nurse to become the best they can be. We do this through

continuing education, training, and empowering our nurses to

make changes to improve our hospital. And we do it all with

the support of a community that knows nurses are the heart of

health care.

The donors who were instrumental in the seven year process

we term “Our Magnet Journey” include the Koplin family of

Hinsdale. They were critical to our success, funding the Magnet

preparation and providing nursing scholarships and other gifts.

Our own nurses made gifts to support nursing education, and

several other key donors in our community also made nursing

education their priority.

This support resulted in earning not only Magnet status but

also the Magnet program’s ‘exemplar’ status for the innovative

procedures and practices our nurses have developed as part of

their continuing education. The end result is a positive one for

our patients– they receive healing care in a hospital recognized

for the quality of its nurses and dedicated to constant

improvement.

Our commitment to nursing excellence resonates across our community of donors. You made gifts to fund the work involved in the Magnet journey, established scholarships that allowed our nurses to achieve advanced degrees, and provided support for new equipment, practices, and programs that were championed by our nurses. Every time a nurse brings a new and better technique to a patient’s bedside, your belief in our nurses is rewarded.

For over fifty years the Hinsdale Assembly debutantes, honor guard, their parents and the Assembly Board members have worked to advance Adventist Hinsdale Hospital’s role in our community. An important component of Assembly participation is service. Each class actively contributes to a lasting legacy of community service and leadership under the guidance of dedicated Assembly Board members.

The Assembly Board’s generosity funded the hospital’s Wellness Garden and greatly contributed to the building of the Koplin Pavilion, a commitment honored by naming the Hinsdale Assembly Board Surgical Unit on the pavilion’s third floor. The Assembly Board is currently engaged in a $1,000,000 pledge to the new cancer center.

The Hinsdale Hospital Foundation Junior Board is an organization for local area high school students to benefit the faith-based mission of the hospital and support the community it serves. It offers opportunities for leadership, service projects, and education. The Junior Board members participate in a number of hospital outreach activities including staffing the annual ice cream social, caroling to patients at Christmas, gathering supplies for the hospital’s mission trip, assisting at the pediatric rehabilitation unit’s family fair and at the Rotary’s annual Rooney Run. The Junior Board is guided in their activities by a dedicated volunteer team of parents:
