But don't let the showers disturb your plans-take a hint from the natives and go about your visit. If it is raining one moment, chances are the sun will be shining the next. With an average daily temperature of 62 de- grees, March starts the greening of New Or- leans as spring flowers begin to bloom-a de- lightful change from gray, cloudy, cold winter days. Past Congress-goers will know from experi- ence that comfortable walking shoes are al- ways a must. This year, the exhibits will be in the Louisiana Superdome-walking distance from some hotels, a Congress shuttle bus ride away from others. If you want to go sightseeing in the French Quarter, it is much easier to do it on foot. Pedestrian malls on the major streets make leisurely strolling enjoyable. The cuisine of New Orleans remains one of its top attractions. Many major restaurants,for which the city is famous, are within easy walk- ing distance of downtown hotels. Others, both new and old, will require a taxi ride to one of the suburbs, but don't let that deter you. The food is worth the ride. Duringthe Congress period, New Orleans is in its quiet phase for the six weeks between Carnival and Easter. Even then, the city has much to offer a visitor. If you planto stay in New Orleans after Congress, remember to make your individual post-Congress reservations.
