High Integrity Pressure Protection Systems

Your Asset and HIPPS:The connection of new gas production sources to a gas plant facility have often required mechanical relief devices for protection of the gas production facility and / or pipeline. New production sources connected to existing pipelines require that the pipeline is protected against potential overpressure which may result in the release of the hydrocarbons to the atmosphere or undesirable burning of these hydrocarbons via a flare system.
International standards - API 521, Code Case 2211 of the ASME Section VIII, Division 1 and 2, ANSI/ISA 84.01-2004, IEC 61511 - are now in place to allow for the application of high reliability safety instrumented systems to replace traditional mechanical relief devices and to remove the need for flaring.
The evolution of High Integrity Pressure Protection System (HIPPS) has therefore radically reduced the need for traditional mechanical relief devices and the level of flaring in oil and gas applications. Direct CAPEX and OPEX Benefits:On a new construction we can negate the need for pressure relief valve manifolds and flare systems. On existing processing plants we can negate the need to upsize the flare and the relief valve manifold and in some cases remove the existing system with the installation of a HIPPS package. Providing a HIPPS system at the wellhead or pressure source allows the downstream piping to be down rated and hence reduces capital expenditure. For offshore installations flaring can be significantly reduced and, on new installations, significant weight savings can be attained with the use of HIPPS system.
The Final Element:Our HIPPS solutions utilise trunnion mounted, double block and bleed ball valves that are suitable for both the API and ANSI codes. Valve torque is low, allowing for smaller faster actuation packages, where we are able to have full closure on 16”-2500 systems in less than 2 seconds with no damage to the valve, the actuator and little or no “hammer” effect on the pipeline itself. The dual seat design of the valve provides a positive bi-directional shut-off; this feature allows the system to check the centre tap for leakage in both the open and closed position.
The valve actuator is integrated in the assembly with a fully machined and totally enclosed mounting incorporating guide pins to ensure proper alignment and thus ensuring long seal life of both the valve and actuator.

The Logic Solver:The development of the HIPPS package is governed by IEC 61508 /61511 which define specific guidelines to configure the SIS to provide the necessary risk reduction and meet the required Safety Integrity Level (SIL). The Logic Solver uses standard, proven function block software and available options which include partial stroke testing, valve function logging (to support preventative maintenance regimes), communications to all major DCS systems and customised third party communication interfaces.
The SIS controller can be provided from a range of IEC 61508 SIL 3 certified platforms, to include scalable 2oo3, 1oo2D and simplex architectures, with SIS choice dictated by functionality and availability requirements, system cost and/or customer preference.
Silvertech is independently certified under CASS to provide SIS software for applications rated at up to SIL 3 such that a Silvertech HIPPS solution has both a fully certified SIS controller and application software within an overall SIL rated HIPPS solution.
Enclosure solutions for both safe and hazardous areas are available, with stainless or marine grade painted mild steel.
Independent HIPPS Certification:Within the ICS Triplex Group of companies, Functional Safety Consultancy (FSC) is a resource available to independently assess and certificate the HIPPS supplied by Silvertech. Within FSC the team members are actively involved in the generation of industry
safety standards including IEC61508 and IEC61511 thus ensuring that the HIPPS provided are fully compliant with current legislation and industry standards.
