The Lord said, How great an outcry there is against Sodom and Gomorrah! How grievous is their sin! I propose to go down and see whether or not they have done all that is alleged in the outcry against them that has come up to me. I am determined to know. The men leſt there and went to Sodom while Abraham remained standing before the Lord. Approaching him he said, Are you really going to destroy the just man with the sinner? Perhaps there are fiſty just men in the town. Will you really overwhelm them, will you not spare the place for the fiſty just men in it? Do not think of doing such a thing: to kill the just man with the sinner, treating just and sinner alike! Do not think of it! Will the judge of the whole earth not administer justice? The Lord replied, If at Sodom I find fiſty just men in the town, I will spare the whole place because of them.Abraham replied, I am bold indeed to speak like this to my Lord, I who am dust and ashes. But perhaps the fiſty just men lack five: will you destroy the whole city for five?’ ‘No’, he replied I will not destroy it if I find forty-five just men there.Again Abraham said to him, Perhaps there will only be forty there.’ ‘I will not do ithe replied for the sake of the forty.Abraham said, I trust my Lord will not be angry, but give me leave to speak: perhaps there will only be thirty there.’ ‘I will not do ithe replied if I find thirty there. He said, I am bold indeed to speak like this, but perhaps there will only be twenty there.’ ‘I will not destroy ithe replied for the sake of the twenty. He said, I trust my Lord will not be angry if I speak once more: perhaps there will only be ten.’ ‘I will not destroy ithe replied for the sake of the ten.(R.) Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me. I thank you, Lord, with all my heart, you have heard the words of my mouth. Before the angels I will bless you. I will adore before your holy temple. (R.) I thank you for your faithfulness and love which excel all we ever knew of you. On the day I called, you answered; you increased the strength of my soul. (R.) The Lord is high yet he looks on the lowly and the haughty he knows from afar. Though I walk in the midst of affliction you give me life and frustrate my foes. (R.) You stretch out your hand and save me, your hand will do all things for me. Your love, O Lord, is eternal, discard not the work of your hands. (R.) You have been buried with Christ, when you were baptised; and by baptism, too, you have been raised up with him through your belief in the power of God who raised him from the dead. You were dead, because you were sinners and had not been circumcised: he has brought you to life with him, he has forgiven us all our sins. He has overridden the Law, and cancelled every record of the debt that we had to pay; he has done away with it by nailing it to the cross. Alleluia, alleluia! You have received the Spirit which makes us Gods children, and in that Spirit we call God our Father. Alleluia! Once Jesus was in a certain place praying, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said, Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples. He said to them, Say this when you pray: Father, may your name be held holy, your kingdom come; give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive each one who is in debt to us. And do not put us to the test.”’ He also said to them, Suppose one of you has a friend and goes to him in the middle of the night to say, My friend, lend me three loaves, because a friend of mine on his travels has just arrived at my house and I have nothing to offer him”; and the man answers from inside the house, Do not bother me. The door is bolted now, and my children and I are in bed; I cannot get up to give it to you.I tell you, if the man does not get up and give it him for friendships sake, persistence will be enough to make him get up and give his friend all he wants. So I say to you: Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. For the one who asks always receives; the one who searches always finds; the one who knocks will always have the door opened to him. What father among you would hand his son a stone when he asked for bread? Or hand him a snake instead of a fish? Or hand him a scorpion if he asked for an egg? If you then, who are evil, know how to give your children what is good, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!’’ The scriptural quotations are taken from the Jerusalem Bible, published and copyright 1966, 1967 and 1968 by Darton Longman and Todd Ltd and Doubleday & Co Inc, and used by permission of the publishers. He and Fr Vinoj will be pastoring Charters Towers, Richmond, Hughenden and Winton. Thank you for your ministry within our district. Next weekend, we will welcome back Fr Mobin. Fr Mobin will be here until at least February— Im not really sure of the length of his appointment. I look forward very much to his return. This Tuesday, there will be a day of evaluations of Emenes diaconal ministry. Hopefully, aſter this, the Bishop will call Emene to the priesthood. Please, keep him in your prayers. It has been remiss of me not to write about the Australian Catholic Youth Festival. Two years ago, nine of our young parishioners attended the ACYF in Sydney. This year, we have twenty-two young ones from Gilroy Santa Maria College and St Teresas who will be attending the ACYF in Perth. It amazes me that so many of our young students put their hands up to attend an event based on growing in faith, hope and love. Over the next several months, there will be a few fundraising opportunities in which they are supplementing their family contributions. Please support them. This week is Catholic Education Week. On Wednesday morning, we will celebrate our annual Mass with kindy kids from Mary MacKillop, the whole of Lourdes and St Peters, and representative classes from St Teresas and Gilroy Santa Maria Colleges. This is always a beautiful Mass that expresses the breadth and depth of the richness of catholic education in our district. Everyone is welcome to attend. This past week, we celebrated Grandparents Day at Lourdes. This was the week of the Feast Day of Joachim and Anne, parents of Mary and thus grandparents of Jesus. St Patricks Church was full to overflowing. It was wonderful to have so many grandparents and great-grandparents present as we thanked God for the way in which they are instruments of Gods love in their families. Also, this past week, our fiſty sacramental preparation children began preparing for First Holy Communion which will be celebrated on August 24/25 in Ingham and on September 1 at Canossa. Please pray for these children as they prepare to receive the great sacrament of Gods love. The Church: a hospital for sinners, a training school for saints. Catholic Education Week will be celebrated across Queensland from 28 July – 3 August 2019. This annual event is held to promote the special ethos of Catholic schools and to highlight the great things that take place in Catholic schools every day. The theme for this year’s celebrations is: Many Voices. One Spirit.

Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society. There are 306 Catholic schools in Queensland and 30 schools in our Diocese that educate around 149,000 students and employ more than 20,000 teachers and staff, and most will celebrate Catholic Education Week in some way.

The Commission for Cultural Diversity invites all to attend a Family Picnic and Fun Day to celebrate unity, friendship and fun in our community. It will be an opportunity for people from all backgrounds to showcase their own culture through food, music, dancing and children’s activities. The picnic will run from 12 noon – 3pm on Sunday, 4 August at Sherriff Park, Love Lane Mundingburra. Please bring a plate to share, a picnic rug or chairs and enjoy in the festivities of the day. Question:

I've heard that love is a theological virtue. What does that mean?

Answer:

Charles Shultz, the creator of the Peanuts comics wrote, "I love mankind... it's people I can't stand!" This good humored comment gets at an important truth. St. John wrote a very strong statement in one of his letters: "If anyone says 'I love God,' but hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen" (1 John 4:20). How often do we say "I love the homeless," but ignore the parish food drive? Or insist on the importance of respecting others, but don't bother to say hello to our cashier? If we can't love an individual person, we might not love people like we think, and we certainly need to work on our love for God. Love is "the theological virtue by which we love God above all things for His own sake, and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God" (CCC 1822). God knows acts of love of Him and others isn't always easy. So He invites us to pray for the grace to do it. The virtue of love gives us the grace and strength we need to offer our lives to God and love people in our lives, especially those who are difficult to respect, tolerate, and care for. Real love, of course, is risky. Real love wills the good of the other when we just want good for ourselves. Real love gets up on the cross when we'd prefer to take a nap in Gethsemane. Real love changes things.

Please Pray For: Ettore Firmi, Pippo Costa (Sicily)(died this week), Anne Eichorn (Brisbane)(died last week), John Lowth, Cesire Valese, Mary Cauchi, Salvatore Marino, Georgina Molachino, Ferruccio Vettoretto, Mary Derlagen, Vera Williams, Emilia Torrisi, Vittorio Antoniutti (annivs at this time), Edna Johnson, Ross Contarino, Janice Day, Augustine Cauchi, Dec’d members Sartoresi & Vella families, Mario Martini, Vittorio & Maria Cantoni, Attilio Candosin, Carlo & Maria Magoni, Elliott Francis Mathiesen, Alfio Di Giacomo, Santo & Giuseppina Contarino, Delia Manassero, Giacomo & Giuseppe Giliberto, Diane Pavetto, Baldo Fanti, Elena Vincenzi, Greg Swarbrick, Dec’d members Geary family, Rupert, Nellie, Isabel & Nicholas Lee

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. Let perpetual light shine upon them.

May they rest in peace. Amen. May their souls

and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
