On behalf of the Healthcare Informatics Society of Ireland, I would like to welcome you to the Society’s 21st Annual Conference and Scientific Symposium, Ireland’s premier healthcare informatics event.

Now that the national EHR is almost with us, we chose the theme ‘Digital Patient: Empowerment through Technology’ to build some new focus on what the risks, impacts and benefits are for Irish patients in an ‘electronic health system’. I think most of us are in agreement that there are huge potential benefits in terms of time savings and cost efficiencies but none of those matter when it is you or your anyone else struggling to make sense of a new and unfamiliar system.

So how do we get the people who matter, the patients, to buy into what we are doing? How do we retain or improve patient trust? How much of their record, and I stress their record, is it in their benefit to see? How much of it can we share with primary, secondary or community care? How will we use this new influx of data to direct our research, our commissioning of services? Do we have the skills and policies in place to do this properly?

These are the questions we are going to discuss over the next two days. Our plenary session on Day 1 sets the scene for us perfectly. eHealth Ireland CIO, Richard Corbridge will give us his update on the National EHR project which sets the scene for Dame Fiona Caldicott to give us some of her vast experience of the challenges of sharing patient data within the health system.

Dr Amir Hannan & Ingrid Bridle will tell us their fascinating story of how a GP and a Patient Participation Group rebuilt patient trust through the transparency of the EHR in a community rocked by scandal. While Dr Cian Hughes is doing things right at the edge of our imagination to try and solve some of the most acute and fatal patient conditions. Also on Day 1, we have a great selection of workshops and masterclasses, a top class programme of speakers at the HISI ICT/CIO Forum and some of the best new research in our Academic Symposium.

Our Nursing and Midwifery group, HISI NM, lead the charge on Day 2 with a packed morning of speakers from the clinical, nursing and allied health professions. There is no better group to focus on what eHealth means for patients.

Our Industry Solutions Sessions will reveal some of the great new projects of the last year and the eHealth Ireland ecosystem will close off the show. I’m particularly looking forward to hearing Dr. Catherine Kelly, Chief Clinical Information Officer of University College London Hospital.

It’s hard to believe that the eHealth Ireland ecosystem is only one years old but only because we have done so much. The ecosystem meeting at this year’s HISI is already the 6th meeting in 12 months!Next month the first All Island Ecosystem will happen in Belfast when the Northern Ireland ecosystem joins up with the eHealth Ireland ecosystem to discuss the issues with the potential to build on for collaboration. On behalf of the HISI Executive I would like to thank the Irish Computer Society and ECHAlliance for facilitating the first year and making it such a great success, the HSE for their leadership and resourcing, and a massive thank you to the HISI membership for supporting it so wholeheartedly.

On behalf of the Society I would like to thank all of our sponsors and supporters who are the real people who make HISI work. I trust you will enjoy a stimulating and informative two days.

Thank you.

A Thank You to the HISI Programme CommitteeThe Irish Computer Society and the Health Informatics Society of Ireland would like to express its thanks to everyone on the HISI Programme Committee for their tireless efforts in developing this year’s HISI Conference programme. The diversity of speakers and topics over the two days demonstrate the Committee’s commitment to delivering an engaging programme each year.

HISI Fit StageGet it off your chest!!!!During day one and up to lunch time on day 2, HISI are giving you an opportunity to express your view on any healthcare issue. Submit your issue and let it be aired on the ‘HISI Fit Stage’ during lunch time on day 2. The idea is to facilitate a discussion on key issues within healthcare in an informal setting.

O’Moore MedalThe HISI Executive Committee would like to invite you to attend the presentation of the 2016 O’Moore Medal, to take place at 5:00pm on Thursday November 17th in the President’s Terrace at the Aviva Stadium. The Healthcare Informatics Society of Ireland awards the O’Moore Medal as appropriate to individuals or organisations that have made a major contribution to Healthcare Informatics.

Best Paper AwardAfter the academic papers session has concluded, the ‘Best Paper’ award will be given to the best paper in terms of presentation, relevance, and originality. The award will be given out shortly after the presentations have concluded by the academic session chairs.

RAMI Medal Winner 2016Congratulations to the winners of the 2016 RAMI Medal, Conor Malone et al. (Beacon Hospital), who developed the DocIT system, Ireland’s first electronic doctor task list system. The system helps support the communication between doctors and those asking them to do tasks.
