his quote struck me as especiallyappropriate for the Friends ofArrow Rock when I recently readit in a publication of the VirginiaHistorical Society (VHS), one of

the oldest and largest state historical societies inthe country. The Friends have benefited a greatdeal over the years from information, advice, andsupport from leading history-related organizationssuch as the VHS, from our own outstanding StateHistorical Society of Missouri in Columbia, theMissouri History Museum in St. Louis, the ColonialWilliamsburg Foundation in Williamsburg, Virginia, the National Trust for Historic Preservation in

Washington, D.C., and other or-ganizations who, although muchlarger, have goals and missionssimilar to the work of the Friends.

When the Friends of Arrow Rockwas founded in 1959, the town of Arrow Rock was largely in anadvanced state of decay, asidefrom a few private homes andthe buildings in the Arrow Rock

State Park (now the Arrow Rock State HistoricSite). Our mission was simply to prevent furtherdeterioration of as many of the buildings as possible. Thanks to a lot of hard work and generous supportover the past 54 years, the 13 buildings owned bythe Friends have been preserved and restored, and private property owners have been inspiredto save most of the others. Historic preservationwas our first, and still our primary, effort.

Once the buildings had been restored, generousdonors made gifts to the Friends of valuable antiquefurniture, works of art, antique firearms, archaeolog-ical artifacts, and many other items related to thehistory of Arrow Rock and the Boonslick districtof central Missouri. Starting in the 1960s, this naturally led to the expansion of the Friends’ effortsfrom historic preservation into use of many of therestored buildings as museums. The Friends havebenefited from two consultations with the AmericanAssociation of Museums through their MuseumAssessment Program, and in many ways we nowfunction as a history museum.

During the 1970s, the Friends’ educational programsbegan as a way to make better use of the restoredbuildings and the unique museum collections.

Our educational efforts expanded dramaticallyunder the leadership of our first professional staffmembers in the 1980s and 1990s. Now thousandsof students of all ages take part every year in theeducational programs of the Friends. There is nodoubt that the Friends of Arrow Rock is now oneof the leading history education organizations inMissouri.

Also starting in the 1970s, the Friends began to issuereprints of several out-of-print historic books aboutthe Arrow Rock area. We were directly or indirectlyresponsible for several new publications about ArrowRock during the 1980s and 1990s, including originalhistorical articles published in the Friends’newsletter. In the last ten years, the Friends havepublished or co-published full-length books suchas Michael Dickey’s award-winning Arrow Rock,Crossroads of the Missouri Frontier and a completecollection of the letters of Arrow Rock’s favoriteson, artist George Caleb Bingham, co-publishedwith the State Historical Society of Missouri in2011 as “But I Forget That I Am a Painter and Nota Politician”: The Letters of George Caleb Bingham. With the generous support of the PillsburyFoundation of Frontenac, Missouri, the Friendsare now about to undertake the production of afull-length documentary on the life and art ofGeorge Caleb Bingham. Thus the Friends havedeveloped into a historical research and publicationorganization.

So it is hard to say if the Friends of Arrow Rock are ahistoric preservation organization, a history museum,a kind of school of history, or a full-fledged historicalsociety. We have some of the aspects of all of these, although we clearly have more work to do to reachour goals in any of these areas. Perhaps it is easiestto sum up our work with the quote with which Ibegan: “We are in the remembering business.”

There is a lot of important history to remember inArrow Rock, and we hope that you will help us inour work of preserving, recording, and sharing it.We encourage you to join the Friends at any of thelevels you will find listed in the membership rollsas you review this report, and please come to seeus often. We promise you that you will long re-member your visit to Arrow Rock, and that yourfriendship for this special place will not be forgotten.Thank you for being a Friend!

Executive Director Kathy Borgman stresses the impor-tance of the income that will be provided by this fund, because Arrow Rock has such an abundance of historicthemes—the Missouria and Osage Indians, Lewis &Clark, the fur trade, the War of 1812, the Santa Fe Trail, westward expansion, frontier medicine, the Civil War,Missouri governors, the artistry of George Caleb Bingham, and African-American life—to name just a few! Thewealth of history here is wonderful, but it also poses someinteresting challenges.

“You can learn about all aspects of 19th century Missourihere in Arrow Rock, but you can’t do it all in one visit orone tour,” Kathy explains. “This endowment will enableus to develop our annual themes so that our knowledgewill continue to grow and we will gain a new appreciationfor the many things we can learn from our past, and in turnconvey this history to many of Arrow Rock’s ca. 125,000annual visitors.”

The 2013 theme will focus on 19th century medicine, atime when deadly cholera and malaria (called the “shakin’ague”) caused untold hardship and death for many 19thcentury settlers. Doctors of the day were ill equipped tofight these little understood diseases, and practices like“purging, puking, & bleeding” were widely accepted.Arrow Rock’s own Dr. John Sappington recognized the

They contributed gifts providingfor intern housing, and for“adopting” the SappingtonMuseum, which providedfunds for the new entryway, and they donated two original copies of Dr. Sappington’s book On theTheory and Treatment ofFevers. The Halls also sponsored memberships inNonprofit Connect, a KansasCity organization that provides education, resources, and networking for area non-

profits, and in the ColonialWilliamsburg Foundation.

Endowment Gift Honors Janette Bohlken Crumpacker

The Friends of Arrow Rock have received a very generous gift of $50,000 to establish the Janette Louise Bohlken Crumpacker Memorial Fund.

This permanent endowment fund is a gift of Mr.Joe D. Crumpacker of Nashville, Tennessee, to

honor the memory of his beloved wife Janette, whogrew up near Arrow Rock. Annual income from theMemorial Fund will be used by the Friends of ArrowRock to establish and maintain an annual history-education and interpretation program.

limitations and even dangers of such methods. Learningof the success of treating fevers in Europe with “theessence of the bark,” which we now know as quinine, Dr.Sappington mass-produced and marketed this first “wonder drug,” quinine, in the form of “Sappington’sAnti-Fever Pills.”

These anti-fever pills were instrumental in the settlementof the Missouri River Valley and were carried west bySanta Fe traders. In 1844, Dr. Sappington published abook in Arrow Rock, On the Theory and Treatment of Fevers, which is believed to be the first medical book written westof the Mississippi. This year, income from the JanetteLouise Bohlken Crumpacker Memorial Fund will helpdefray the costs of developing programs and associatedmaterials to tell this and other fascinating stories of 19thcentury medicine to school groups and on guided tours.

Janette Bohlken was born in Saline County and graduatedfrom Slater High School. Her father Francis worked for asubcontractor who did work for the Corps of Engineers inhelping to stabilize the Missouri River banks during the1930s and 1940s.

She met Joe Crumpacker at the University of Missouriin 1951; they were married in 1953. After graduationfrom MU they moved away from Missouri, but theArrow Rock area always held a special place in herheart. Local residents who remember Janette recallthat she was very faithful in returning to visit hermother Eula who continued to live in the area and thatshe always liked to shop for unique gifts for Christmas

and other occasions in Arrow Rock. Janette was also anavid genealogist, which helped to spark her interest inlocal history.

Noting their frequent visits to Arrow Rock, JoeCrumpacker said there was a time years ago—beforemost of the historic preservation efforts occurred—when he was concerned about the fate of the village. In a recent call to Mr. Crumpacker, he expressed reliefthat Arrow Rock had escaped the fate of many othersmall Missouri towns: “It is surely wonderful thatArrow Rock did make it,” he said.

Janette died on August 13, 2011, leaving behind her hus-band and four daughters and their families, includingseven grandchildren. Joe established the endowmentfund to honor Janette and to support the work of theFriends of Arrow Rock in preserving the history of theplace that meant so much to her. Janette and JoeCrumpacker had been married for 58 years at the time ofher death.

“The Friends of Arrow Rock are extremely grateful toreceive this most generous endowment gift in memoryof Janette Bohlken Crumpacker,” said Friends of ArrowRock President Tom Hall. “It not only honors her inperpetuity, it is also a permanent source of funds thatwe can count on to carry out the mission of the Friendsof Arrow Rock. Our sincere thanks go to Mr. JoeCrumpacker for his very thoughtful and appropriate giftin memory of Mrs. Crumpacker. She will be gratefullyremembered in Arrow Rock.”

Jeffris Challenge Grant Offers ‘Rare Opportunity’

The Jeffris Family Foundation has awarded the Friends of Arrow Rock a $230,000 Challenge Grant forwork on four of the Friends’ most historically significant properties: the John P. Sites Jr. House and

Gunsmith Shop, the Masonic Lodge and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge.

The grant is contingent on raising a local match of $460,000 over the next two-and-a-half years, so the Friendsare busily at work seeking funding. To date, $89,411 has been received or committed.

The specific projects to be completed are based on the recommendations contained in four professional HistoricStructure Reports (HSR’s), which the Friends commissioned in 2011. These detailed reports identified structural, mechanical and preservation needs for the buildings, as well as an opportunity for adaptive reuse of thesecond floor of the Masonic Lodge as a modern meeting room. The Historic Structure Reports were supportedby the Jeffris Heartland Fund administered by the National Trust for Historic Preservation; the William T.Kemper Foundation, Commerce Bank Trustee; the Board of Governors of the Miller Gift; and proceeds fromthe 50th Anniversary Campaign.

“We are grateful to the Jeffris Family Foundation for their commitment to preservation in rural midwesterncommunities such as Arrow Rock,” said Friends of Arrow Rock President Tom Hall. “It offers us a rare opportunity to receive both professional advice and financial support to help us carry out the recommendationsin the HSR’s.”

Gifts and bequests to the Friends of Arrow Rock’s endowment fundare an especially thoughtful and long-lasting way to support theFriends’ mission of historic preservation and education.

In 2012, income from the endowment provided over

$35,000 of our income of $244,000. The endow-

ment is made up of five named endowment funds and

one undesignated fund. For investment purposes,

these funds are pooled and the pooled fund is divided

between investment accounts that are professionally

managed by the trust departments of Wood & Huston

Bank in Marshall, Missouri, and Bank of America in

Kansas City, Missouri. Named endowment funds may

have either unrestricted or restricted uses. Of the five

named endowment funds, their donors have restricted

three to specific uses.

Named endowment funds may be established with a

gift or bequest of $50,000 or more. This is an ideal

way to honor or memorialize a family member, or to

provide a permanent source of income for one of the

Friends’ programs or activities that appeals to you. Call

the Friends of Arrow Rock office at 660-837-3231 to

learn more about this and other opportunities to establish

named endowment funds.

54th Annual Meeting- Noon lunch at the J. Huston Tavern - Speaker: Geoff Giglierano, Executive Director, Missouri Humanities Council - Distinguished Service Award Presented to John & Donna Huston - Call FAR office for reservations: 660-837-3231

After a year of closure discussionsand speculation about the future

of the Arrow Rock, Missouri, Post Office(and several thousand others aroundthe country), the USPS has officiallypresented their plan.

Beginning in January 2013, many largeroffices with Postmasters that took anearly retirement package were left vulnerable. Hours were reduced orservices were changed to rural delivery.

Because the Arrow Rock Postmasterdid not retire, the Post Office will remain open eight hours a day untilSeptember 30, 2014. At that time shewill be mandatorily retired. The office

will then come under the supervision of a larger office (Arrow Rock’s homeoffice will be Marshall, Missouri) and a clerk will be hired to run the ArrowRock office.

The office will then be open either four(4) or two (2) hours a day, depending on revenue generated. Hopefully, thelobby will remain open for customersto retrieve their mail. There is also thepossibility it may become a rural mailroute, with a cluster box for deliveries.

Your response to our plea for help madea huge difference for Arrow Rock andall rural post offices around the country. It caused the Postal Service and

Government to recognize the importanceof these individual Post Offices to theircommunities and each citizen’s right to standardized and equal universalservice. It was a great grass roots effort that brought results and is stillbeing discussed in the legislature.Thank you!You can still help the Arrow Rock Post Of-fice by continuing to order stamps. Revenueand volume are two significant measuresthat will determine future levels of service.

To order stamps, call the office, 660-837-3464,

or send your request to USPS, 304 Main St.,

Arrow Rock, MO 65320. The stamps will be

mailed to you immediately upon receipt of your

check. Your support is always appreciated!

Sixty-five individuals shared their energy, talent and time tomake our event a great success!

Heritage Craft FestivalRain and threatening weather cut down on the crowd forour annual Heritage Craft Festival in October, but it didnot cut into their enthusiasm! While the Historic ArrowRock Council has typically sponsored the event, theFriends always take the opportunity to showcase ourbuildings through exhibits and demonstrations. TheJohn P. FRIENDS OF ARROW ROCK LEGACY SOCIETY

The Friends of Arrow Rock Legacy Society recognizesthose who have named the Friends as a recipient ofa gift upon their death. This is the ultimate vote ofconfidence given to our work of preservation andhistory education in Arrow Rock.

Twenty-three Legacy Society members were recog-nized at a luncheon at the Arrow Rock Station on June30. Artist Cheryl Harness, creator of the new ArrowRock Coloring Book, spoke. We welcomed Henry H.Harris IV as a new Legacy Society member. Later in theyear, Joe D. Crumpacker established a named endow-ment fund in memory of his late wife, “The JanetteLouise Bohlken Crumpacker Memorial Fund” (see accompanying article). A final settlement came from theestate of Helen B. Page. We were saddened by thedeaths of Legacy Society members Dr. Robert H.Hodge and Page Williams.

Unless otherwise designated, all bequests are placed inour Endowment Fund, which now totals over $860,000.In 2012, income from the endowment totaled $35,659.This was a substantial and very welcome contributiontoward the Friends’ 2012 operating budget.

Consider joining the Legacy Society by notifying usthat you have designated a gift to the Friends in yourwill or estate plans. No minimum amount is required, and we do not ask you to disclose the amount of yourplanned gift, though it does help for planning purposesif you choose to do so.
