FROM THE DESK OF, FR. THOMAS KOYS, M.A., S.T.L., PASTOR

LEMONT, IL — St. James at Sag Bridge Church is celebrating its 185th anniversary this year and is celebrating with a holiday faire. The faire takes place Saturday, July 21 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, July 22, from 9 a.m. to 1

p.m. Our inaugural Holiday Faire will offer customers products and gifts, unique crafts and one-of-a-kind items. During the two-day event, attendees can buy the newest and greatest in beauty products, fashion apparel, household décor, holiday crafts and gourmet goodies. Admission is free for guests, however donations are appreciated. All money raised from the event is distributed back to the Church.

We all know that many students of science convince them-selves that much of religion in based on ideas that have been popular in the past because of superstition or indoc-trination, but here’s a bit of news that should be shared with all our young “falling away from Catholicism” friends. Have you ever heard of Einstein’s theory of a “gravitational wave”? Back in 1915, he hypothesized that if two neutron stars would be caught in a mutual gravita-tional spiral they would eventually collide creating a huge “bang” that would send out some kind of ripple in space. Well, wouldn’t you know that Jeffrey Cooke, an astro-physicist, who happens to be a Catholic, from a parish in Westville IL, where one of my close priest friends is pastor made a most incredible discovery.

Mr. Cooke, along with many other scientists throughout the world, was part of team that has been searching the heavens for any sign of the “Einstein ripple”. On August 17, 2017, Jeffery’s team found it. His team was monitor-ing 15 of the 70 land based and space based telescopes and detected a gravitational wave and were able to connect it to an electromagnetic light source emanating from a gal-axy known as NGC 4993 within the constellation Hydra. The detection of this wave and it’s verifiable connection to its source, galaxy NGC 4993 shows that galaxy NGC 4993 was “created” 130 million years ago in some kind of “big

bang”. The gravitational ripple passed us earthlings, who sit precisely 130 million light years about Hydra. Though this doesn’t prove that Jesus Christ is Lord of Lords and the founder of our precious Catholic religion, it goes a long way in proving the validity of a primal big band for the whole universe. And if there was a primal big bang then there was a beginning of the universe as we know it. If there was a beginning then there was a time when it wasn’t. Something, or can we say, someone caused it? Of course, that’s only logical as Spock would have said. The proof of a big band has caused the atheistic scientists such alarm that discoveries such as Mr. Cooke’s have pushed them to come up with their “multi-verse” theories. And they still maintain that they’re the ones who think logical-ly. Next time you gaze into a starry night try singing a verse of “How great Thou art.”

President Ronald Reagan once famously stated, "We main-tain the peace through our strength; weakness only invites aggression." The "“Peace Through Strength Challenge" is about our resolve to become strong in God's supernatural power; the only power capable of standing athwart the aggressive satanic forces of evil (Ephesians 6:10-12). We want hundreds of thousands of “supernaturally strong" warriors ready for the Rosary Coast to Coast on October 7th. In writing about the effects of Baptism, Archbishop Fulton Sheen said: “Baptism infuses seven virtues into the soul, the first three of which relate to God Himself, name-ly, faith, hope, and charity. We are thus enabled to believe in Him, hope in Him, and love Him. But four other virtues, called moral virtues, are related to the means of attaining God; these are prudence, justice, fortitude, and temper-ance. By the right use of things for God's sake, by paying our debts to God, by being brave about witnessing our faith and temperate about even the legitimate pleasures of life, we reach God more quickly”.

Fr. Koys chats with Dr. Janet Smith at the Couple to Cou-ple League’s 50th Anniversary of Humane Vitae Confer-ence.

Sixteenth Ordinary Sunday Page Three

WHERE ARE THEY, OUR BAPTIZED CHILDREN

by Ralph Hathaway

We sent our children to learn the Sacraments and accept the very meaning of them. The smiles and pious look as they marched down the aisle to receive Jesus for the first time, in Holy Com-munion. Remember giving up many hours as you had them attend classes for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Each child had reached, (we hoped) an understanding of the two sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation and how Jesus was ready to send His Holy Spirit within them. How mature they appeared as the bishop anointed each one with Chrism, as he said, “Receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit “. My child has become a soldier for Christ (as we were taught in the early days). Now he/she has grown up and is ready to evangelize, if by nothing more than their outward appearance as a Christian. Now, they’re ready to tackle the spiritual world around them and prepare for their journey to God and His Plan of sharing His Life and Love with them. How many years go by and our child wants to get married in the Church, after no longer attending Holy Mass. Was it new-age phi-losophy that enticed them? Perhaps their peers convinced them that those past things, what were they called; O yes, “Sacraments”; past events when they were children. Now, at the age of 20 (at times younger) they have grown up and their friends tell them they no longer need what your parents forced you to adhere to. The empty pews resemble those comments. Even regular church attendees have seen that with their own chil-dren or close relatives. I knew one classmate whose daughter decided to marry outside of the Church, rejecting her Catholic experience. It isn’t a problem of many young people in mixed mar-riages (different religious beliefs) but too many forget their vows to raise their children as Catholic, or even get them to Church on Sundays. I can’t tell you how often I look at some from my own family who were married in the Church yet no longer attend Mass. They are too busy, too involved in worldly attractions and prioritize everything but God. One of my reflections, “Holy Mass - Too Long or Too Short” covered many of the reasons and needs to take a look at what has happened with the church attendance. But, I overlooked the fact that the youth (not all) have divorced themselves from the facts we (older generation) have felt are essential to our be-liefs. What did we have growing up and considered important enough to hold on to our faith? It frightens me, not just as a deacon, but a father, a Roman Cath-olic, and a parishioner of a local church that before our eyes a tragedy from lack of Faith of many has become a real part of our society. Yes, we need to consider the homilies, music, and wel-coming atmosphere for everyone. However, our youth, the future generation of the Church, is in a limbo from misunderstanding and perhaps a feeling of rejection which is nobody’s fault, just a matter of fact that needs addressed. What a sad waste with all the beautiful structures, our Catholic Tradition, and a Clergy pool (new men entering the priesthood) even though the numbers may appear smaller than hoped for, we can not allow the youth to diminish because we didn’t try. We, the older generation, must continue to evangelize our children.

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Judge Brett Kavanaugh is a pretty good guy, according to Msgr. John Enzler, his former pastor and the current president and CEO of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington. He first met Kavanaugh, whom President Donald Trump nomi-nated to the Supreme Court, when he was around 12. Msgr. Enzler was then the pastor at Little Flower Parish in Bethesda, Maryland, when Kavanaugh began serving as an altar boy. Since then, the two have stayed in contact. Msgr. Enzler went to some of Kavanaugh's games when he played sports at Georgetown Preparatory School, officiated his wedding, and might have baptized his children. Msgr. Enzler said that he'd baptized a lot of babies and couldn't be sure that his two daughters were among them. They still see each other on occasion. "He comes to my Sunday evening Mass about once a month," Msgr. Enzler told Catholic News Service July 11. Kavanaugh also volunteers with Msgr. Enzler at St. Maria's Meals, a program which provides and serves hot meals to low-income individuals and families. "The John Carroll Society (a group of Catholic lawyers and professionals which Kavanaugh belongs to) comes about once every other month to help out," Enzler said. He explained that different groups and organizations assist at each meal. Kavanaugh also coaches the girls' basketball team at his parish and tutors at the Washington Jesuit Academy and J.O. Wilson Elementary School. "His faith really shines through in who he is," Enzler said. In addition to his volunteer work, Kavanaugh also serves as a lector at his church, the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Washington. In his acceptance speech July 9 after Trump announced his nomination, Kavanaugh said that "members of the vibrant Cath-olic community in the D.C. area disagree about many things, but we are united in our commitment to serve." Msgr. Enzler also praised Kavanaugh as a man. "This is your neighbor next door. He's a great husband, a won-derful father to his daughters, and has lots and lots of friends. He's very intellectual, of course, but you wouldn't know it by his demeanor." Politics has never been a part of their relationship. "We talk about sports. We don't really talk about politics," Enzler said. Enzler said that Kavanaugh has been a good friend for as long as they've known each other. He talked about how, when Ka-vanaugh was at Georgetown Prep, it was clear that he "loved being with his buddies." "If he's your friend, you have a great friend."

Not with threats of "God will punish you", but becoming like Christ and reaching out with love, peaceful advice, and for-giveness for everything and anything that may occur in their fragile lives.
