Meeting the Historical cities
Warm up:
Minas Gerais is the state which has the biggest number of historical cities in Brazil.
Do you know what a historical city is? Explain
Do you know any historical cities? Which?
Which ones would you like to know?
If you don‟t know any, we will introduce you two:
SABARA
Sabara is a historical city 25 km away from Belo Horizonte, the state Capital. It is an
old city and has lots of churches and museums from the „Golden Age‟ (time when
Portugal explored gold and diamond from cities all over the state).Today Sabará has an
important place in the “Estrada Real” project (reconstitution of the way people used to
come from Rio de Janeiro to the cities in Minas to get gold and bring them food and
other things).
Curiosity: The entire name of the city is Sabarabuçu, word from tupi- guarani, an
Indian language and it means big bright mountain.

Read the text below carefully. It is about Xica da Silva who is an important
person and lived in another historical city in Minas Gerais.
Challenge: What‟s the name of the city where she lived?
Biography
Francisca da Silva de Oliveira was born in Serro, in the
center of nowadays Brazilian state Minas Gerais, and
lived mainly in Diamantina. She was the daughter of a
Portuguese man, Antônio Caetano de Sá, with his black slave, Maria da Costa, probably
from the Gulf of Guinea or Bahia. Her first master was the Sergeant Manuel Pires
Sardinha, with whom she had two sons: Plácido Pires Sardinha and Simão Pires
Sardinha, both studied at the University of Coimbra, in Portugal. Her second master was
Priest Rolim (José da Silva Oliveira), who was forced to sell Chica to João Fernandes
de Oliveira, a diamond mine owner and mining Governor of Arraial to Tijuco, one of
the richest persons of Colonial Brazil.
Francisca and João soon started a romance and she was freed by him. Even though they
were not officially married, the couple lived together for several years and had 13
children: Francisca de Paula (1755); João Fernandes (1756); Rita (1757); Joaquim
(1759); Antonio Caetano (1761); Ana (1762); Helena (1763); Luiza (1764); Antônia
(1765); Maria (1766); Quitéria Rita (1767); Mariana (1769); José Agostinho Fernandes
(1770).
In 1770, João Fernandes had to return to Portugal and took along with him the 4 sons he
had with Chica, who received noble titles of the Portuguese Court. Their daughters
remained with Chica in Brazil and were sent to the Convent of Macaúbas, one of the
best ones at that time. Even after the departure of João, Chica remained with her
prestige. She was a member of the São Francisco do Carmo Brotherhood (exclusive to
white people), Mercês Brotherhood (exclusive to mulattoes) and of Rosário
Brotherhood (exclusive to Africans).
Chica da Silva died in 1796. She was buried at the Church of São Francisco de Assis, a
privilege reserved only for white rich people.

people know each other‟s family, we often sit to talk and to have lunch at friend‟s
houses. We always respect the older people‟s opinion and go to the church every

here, especially Carnival. The city gets crowded and we get afraid of something
dangerous happen. But rarely something happens..

Do you like them? why/why not?
Can you name an old love song and a new one?

SONG ACTIVITY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J91jAFVAVUw
1- Listen to the song without following the lyrics and prepare to say what it is
about.
It is about______________________________________________.
Ain't another woman that can take your spot my
If I wrote you a symphony,
Just to say how much you mean to me (what would you do?)
If I told you you were beautiful
Would you date me on the regular (tell me, would you?)
Well, baby I've been around the world
But I ain't seen myself another girl (like you)
This ring here represents my heart
But there's just one thing I need from you (say "I do")
[Chorus]
Yeah, because
I can see us holding hands
Walking on the beach, our toes in the sand
I can see us on the countryside
Sitting on the grass, laying side by side
You could be my baby, let me make you my lady
Girl, you amaze me
Ain't gotta do nothing crazy
See, all I want you to do is be my love
(So don't give away) My love
(So don't give away) My love
(So don't give away) Ain't another woman that can take your spot, my love
(So don't give away) My love
(So don't give away) My love
(So don't give away) Ain't another woman that can take your spot, my love
Ooooh, girl
My love
My love
Now, if I wrote you a love note
And made you smile with every word I wrote (what would you do?)
Would that make you want to change your scene
And wanna be the one on my team (tell me, would you?)
See, what's the point of waiting anymore?
Cause girl I've never been more sure (that baby, it's you)
This ring here represents my heart
And everything that you've been waiting for (just say "I do")
[Chorus]
[T.I.'s rap]
Shorty, cool as a fan
On the new once again
Still has fan from Peru to Japan
Listen baby, I don't wanna ruin your plan
If you got a man, try to lose him if you can
Cause your girls real wild through your hands up high
Wanna come kick it with a stand up guy
You don't really wanna let the chance go by
Because you ain't been seen wit a man so fly
Friend so fly i can go fly
Private, cause I handle mine
Call me candle guy, simply because I am on fire
I hate to have to cancel my vacation so you can't deny
I'm patient, but I ain't gonna try
You don't come, I ain't gonna die
Hold up, what you mean, you can't go why?
Me and you boyfriend we ain't no tie
You say you wanna kick it with an ace so high
Baby, you decide that I ain't your guy
Ain't gon lie, Me in your space
But forget your face, I swear I will
Same mark, same bullet anywhere I chill
Just bring wit me a pair, I will
