Historical Figures Report

Audience

Who will be participating in this unit?• 3rd Grade Students• A mix of students ranging from

different abilities.

Unit Description

• Students will become an expert on an historical figure.

• Students will be able to use a variety of multimedia tools to create their projects.

Context

• These lessons will be taught in a self contained classroom.

• Each lesson will happen on a different day, the lessons will build upon each other, so when students are done they will have created a final project for their historical figure.

Before the Unit

• Before we begin the unit I will make a screencast detailing what the students will be doing for the unit.

• I then will put it up on the class website for students to view.

Lesson 1

• First the teacher will read about a historical figure, like Ann Frank.

• Tell students they will choose a character from a list, that they would like to do. If they have someone else in mind, they can run it by the teacher to see if they can use that character instead.

• They will become an expert on their character.

• Once students have chosen their character, the teacher will show the students how to use the graphic organizer they will be given, by using example.

• Students will be using Audible to listen to a story (already bought) about their character.

• They will have a graphic organizer in front of them, so they can write down notes.

Lesson 2

• Students will be doing research online, and from books to gather as much information they can on their character.

• The teacher will show a Fakebook example, and explain how to navigate the page.

Lesson 2 cont.

• With the information they already have, students will start creating their Fakebook account• Students will pretend that they are their character.• It will be students jobs, as they gather more

information, to update their Fakebook page.

Lesson 3

• After students have have collected all of their information, the class will make a wikipage.

• The teacher will have already created the main page, and invited the students to join.

Lesson 3

• The teacher will show an example, on how to create a page on the wiki, and how to do text and add pictures.

• Each student will be responsible for putting important information onto their page (they will be given a rubric)

Lesson 5

• Students will be doing a “talk show” creating their own podcast.• Students will be their character, and they will be

interviewed by a peer while being recorded.• They will have the questions beforehand (it’s the

questions they had to answer to fill out information before)

• The podcasts will be uploaded to their wikipages.

Lesson 4

• For the final, students will be writing a story using their character.• What do they think their character would be like

in the 21st century? What would they wear? What would they do?

• Students will then create a slideshare, to present their story to groups.

Justification

• Screencast- I believe parents should be aware of what is happening in their students class. I thought screencast would be a good tool to use, because I can record my voice to explain what we are doing and why.

• Podcast (Audible and create your own)- Students need that audio piece, along with reading, to help them comprehend the text further. Create your own podcast, it gives students a chance to apply their knowledge in a creative way.

Justification

• Wikkis-Instead of having students present to each other in front of the class, I thought having a wiki would be better. Students can browse through the other pages.

• Fakebook- It’s a good way for students to remember about their character, because they have to be in a role where they are their character.

• Slideshare- Students will use slideshare to remember what they wanted to share with their group.
