Arts1060 The Impact of Japanese Art on European Artists

The impact of Japanese art on European Artists— Japan’s opening to international trade in the 1850s created a huge interest in Japanese art and objects by collectors, designers, and artists. Western artists like Van Gogh, Monet and others were inspired by Japanese art and composition. This class will explore the art of Japan and its effect on the styles and trends in art history.

Ann Wiker, Artist, Art Historian and EducatorMonday 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM Jan 22 1 Session $15

1061 The Imperial Treasures - Part I: Architecture of St. Petersburg from Peter the Great to Catherine the Great

Saint Petersburg was envisioned by Peter the Great as “Venice of the North” - the city of the canals. As the

rulers changed so did the architecture of the city. These lectures move chronologically from the founding of St. Petersburg on the Baltic marshes to the Revolution and focuses on its most significant architectural landmarks. Palaces and churches, parks and squares will be presented within the context of history. The first

lecture will trace the evolution from the more austere Petrine Baroque to the grandiose opulence of Elizabethan Baroque to the enlightened Neoclassicism of Catherine II. The second lecture will look at the urban landscape of St. Petersburg during the nineteenth century: from Russia’s victory over Napoleon and the Empire style of Alexander I to the Northern Moderne of Nicholas II.

Irina Stotland, PhD, Art Historian, Author Tuesday 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM Jan 301 Session $15

1062 Monet and the Mediterranean: An Impressionist Journey to the Riviera and Beyond

Want to escape the winter snow and cold? Take an art tour of the sparkling sea and luminous sunshine of the

Mediterranean with master Impressionist Claude Monet. The artist’s special love was the Riviera, whether depicting the lush, palm tree gardens of Italy’s Bordighera or the dramatic beauty of the coast of Monaco and Antibes (near Nice). This program will highlight the numerous seascapes and landscapes inspired by this southern paradise, created during the decade of the 1880s. Plus

we’ll finish with a side trip to Venice (on the Adriatic) where Monet captured the haunting atmosphere of this jewel of a city in 1908.

Joan Hart, Art Historian Monday 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Feb 51 Session $15

1063 Tradition and Transformation: What is Jewish Art

Is “Jewish art” based on the identity of the artist or the art? Is it a matter of subject, style, symbol, purpose? Does the artist

need to be consciously trying to make “Jewish” art? Does an artist who converts into or out of Judaism suddenly begin to make Jewish art or cease to make Jewish art? Against the background of these questions, our discussion will follow a long historical trajectory that moves from the Middle East to Europe, Asia, North Africa, and America as it searches for answers to these questions--which, in the end, we may not

find, but the ride will be breathtaking! Join Art Historian Ori Soltes in this lecture and discussion about Jewish art.

1065 Famous Illustrators as ArtistsWhat’s the difference between an artist and an illustrator?

Why does an artist choose to become an illustrator? Which famous artists have been illustrators? Which illustrations are worthy of art exhibits? What are other venues for illustrations besides children’s books? This course will explore illustration as art form. We will discuss how

illustration has evolved throughout history as we focus on illustrators such as: Norman Rockwell, Lewis Carroll, Maurice Sendak, N.C. Wyeth, Eric Carle, Maxfield Parrish, Chris van Allsburg, Tomie de Paola, Beatrix Potter and more.

Ann Wiker, Artist, Art Historian and EducatorMonday 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM Feb 261 Session $15

1066 The Night Watch by Rembrandt What kind of painting is this? Who are the people in it and

what exactly are they doing? Whose idea was it and who paid for it? How did Rembrandt come to make it? What sources did he use and what ideas did he have? Why is it on display in the Rijksmuseum? How did it get its name? What have people thought about it down through time.

Finally: What is the condition of the painting after all these centuries and is this still the painting Rembrandt left us? Join art historian Nora Hamerman discuss this famous painting.

1067 Visions of Art Nouveau - A Journey to Barcelona and Prague

Take a special tour of Barcelona, and Prague of the Art Nouveau period on a multi-arts special journey. Although

this international style, which encompassed painting, architecture, and decorative arts, lasted only from about 1890--1914, these cities were transformed by the visions of some of its greatest artists. In Barcelona, for example, Antoni Gaudi’s incomparable structures still dominate the city scape, including Sagrada

Cathedral, private mansions, and Guell Park, an amusement park that delights both Barcelonans and tourists. We’ll also be exploring the works of other architects as well as the paintings of the young Picasso and contemporary painters. Then onto Prague, basically untouched by two world wars, is graced with block after block of colorfully designed Art Nouveau apartment buildings, performing arts centers, as well as a former department store now a museum with a perfectly preserved tea room. Plus the increasingly popular works of Alphonse Mucha, who has become Prague’s favorite painter and graphic artist.

Joan Hart, Art HistorianMonday 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM Mar 121 Session $15

1068 Prague: Capital of Cubism?Prague is a writer’s city. Think of Franz Kafka, Rainer Maria

Rilke, or Václav Havel, just to name a few. Less known but just as momentous is Prague’s contribution to the visual arts. It is the only city where Cubism, first developed by Braque and Picasso, was eagerly received and turned into a veritable movement that left

indelible marks between 1910 and 1925. In this talk we will explore how Cubism “traveled” from Paris to Prague and how it was transformed by young Czech intellectuals in such ways that it became the “voice” for an entire generation of painters, sculptors, architects and designers of furniture, posters, and book illustrations. Paris may have invented Cubism but it is in Prague where the style truly flourished.

1087 Jews on the Move: Jewish Travel in the Modern World

The well-worn image of the Wandering Jew has long been seen as a negative commentary on the instability of Jewish

existence, the result of exile and persecution, and a reality that leaves Jews vulnerable and alone.  But in today’s society, Jewish transience is more often a matter of choice.  It’s an affirmation of identity, a search for roots, and a chance to revel in the diversity and history of our world.  From twentieth century nostalgia for the Lower East Side and the Catskills, to youth trips visiting Israel and Poland, to retirees “returning” to Spain, Portugal, Ukraine, and

the Czech Republic, the impetus for Jewish travel is often a blend of spiritual seeking, curiosity, and a search for roots in a vanished world. What is “authentic” and what is opportunistic? What does it mean to hold festivals and tours of Jewish culture in places that are not only devoid of Jewish communities, but which uprooted their long-time Jewish residents in the most barbaric ways possible?  Have trips to Israel become a substitute for Jewish religious commitment and knowledge, especially for younger people?  What do these trends say about the future of Jewish communal life?  In this class, we will encounter more questions than answers.

Lauren Strauss, PhD, Professor of Modern Jewish History and CultureTuesday 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM Jan 231 Session $20

In 1956, Marvin Kalb was a young American diplomatic attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow—who would go on

to become an award-winning diplomatic correspondent. He recalls this tumultuous year, and the years that brought him there, in a new memoir: The Year I Was Peter the Great: 1956—Khrushchev, Stalin’s Ghost, and a Young American in Russia. Taken from the diary he kept during this momentous year, Kalb’s memoir is both a personal and

historical journey that captures his experience as an American witnessing history take place. The Year I Was Peter the Great is an important look back at history, and the uncertainties, fears, and challenges of the early years of the Cold War.

1091 Charles Dickens in Love Charles Dickens is arguably one of the most important

voices in Victorian literature. Through serialized novels, he brought attention to any number of societal ills. Yet women in his novels, specifically his female romantic heroines, feel underdeveloped and under-written. This lecture will look at how Dickens’s love life influenced him as a writer, and as a man. From his devastating lost first love to Maria Beadness, to his split from his wife, Catherine, to be with an 18-year-old

actress named Ellen Ternan. Can we discover what Charles Dickens couldn’t?

1094 CIA and the Presidents: The Agency’s Changing Relationships with the White House

Former DCI Richard Helms once said that “You only work for one President at a time.” His remark encapsulates the CIA’s widely

varying relationships with the White House since its establishment in 1947 and the fact that the Agency depends on the Presidents it serves not only for its missions but its political survival. CIA’s ties to the Presidents have differed widely

over the years: sometimes they have been close or cordial but at other times strained or non-existent. The Agency’s leaders have tried many ways to maintain their relevance and influence with Presidents with a mixed record of success. CIA Chief Historian David Robarge will discuss how the Agency’s dealings with the White House have changed through administrations and how Presidents’ attitudes and experience with intelligence and their foreign policy agendas affect the relationship.

1095 “Trouble Is My Business”: The Private Eye from Pulp Fiction to Movies and TV

The mythic American Private Eye was created by Carroll John Daly and real life private investigator Dashiell Hammett in

the pages of the pulp magazine Black Mask. Short stories became hard-boiled novels like Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon, featuring Sam Spade, and Raymond Chandler’s The Big Sleep, with Philip Marlowe, which both became classic films noir. Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer dominated the bestseller list from the late 1940s into the 1960s, adapting to film, radio and TV, where he was joined by Peter Gunn and the detectives at 77 Sunset Strip, and later

Mannix, The Rockford Files and Magnum PI. In the 1970s, the image of the private eye was de- and reconstructed in neo-noirs like Chinatown, Night Moves and The Long Goodbye. At the same time, a private eye revival began in novels by Robert B. Parker, Lawrence Block, James Crumley, Sue Grafton and real life private investigator Joe Gores. Let’s take a walk down those mean streets.

History1097 Scholars at War

Scholars and scientists have long characterized their work as representing the pursuit of a higher truth unbeholden to

contemporary political affairs. This lecture will examine some of the more egregious betrayals of this ideal during the twentieth century, including: the eagerness of Ivy League archaeologists to serve as spies in the First World War; the Nazi use and abuse of science during the Second World War; the plundering of European archives by a Jewish scholar; and the rehabilitation of Nazi rocket scientists during the Cold War.

1098 From the Age of Aquarius to Donald Trump: How the 1960’s Shaped American Politics Today

We may not wear bell bottoms and tie-dye t-shirts anymore, and let’s not talk about what happened to our hair. But even

though almost half a century has passed since the 1960s, it’s a decade that continues to reverberate in our society, politics, culture, and institutions to this very day. In many ways, America today is a product of the Sixties. From civil rights to feminism to gay liberation to the environmental movement to the silent

majority, what started back then has shaped and influenced our country ever since. Before the Sixties, Americans trusted their government and their leaders; since the Sixties, we question almost everything they do. To many, the presidency of Barack Obama symbolized the liberation movements of the Sixties. But it’s also important to ask how the Sixties produced the presidency of Donald Trump. To understand America today, we must understand the lessons from the 1960s.

1099 American History Through the Lens of Alcohol: How Did We Get to Prohibition

The prohibition of alcohol in 1920 was supposed to have solved, once and for all, a major social problem in the United

States. Instead, it would spark one of the most vibrant (and rebellious) cultural periods in modern American history. This lecture will look at how alcohol impacted American history and became so problematic that Americans thought it had to be banned. However, there were unintended

consequences to Prohibition: It would radically change American society, culture, values, music, and morality in ways that no one could have imagined. Join renowned story-teller and award-winning presenter Allen Pietrobon make history come to life with his narrative lectures.

1100 The Mayan Mirage The impressive monuments and ruins of pre-Columbian

Mesoamerica have longed attracted the attention of European and American explorers, scholars, and journalists. This session will present an overview of the evolution of Western interpretations of these enigmatic ruins, from the classically inspired comparisons with Greco-Roman civilization during the Spanish colonial era to speculations that they were the work of the last refugees of Atlantis. We will also focus on the North American

ideological appropriation of Mesoamerican civilization during the nineteenth century, including efforts by the early Mormons to claim them for their own religious genesis.

1102 Lenin, Hitler and MeVera Kochanowsky will present a talk about her father, Boris

J. Kochanowsky (1905-1992) which will include readings from his recently published memoir, Lenin, Hitler, and Me. She will discuss the amazing autobiography of a man born to a life of wealth and privilege as the youngest son of a Siberian industrial tycoon. With the coming of the Russian Revolution, his charmed life is swept away, and he is thrust into a world of poverty and oppression. Relying solely on his wits, his optimism, and luck, he makes his way to

Germany, where he becomes a successful mining engineer, despite the privations of the German depression. But then, in a single day, his secure position is lost, and he becomes a hunted man. Follow his five-year flight from Nazi persecution through Holland, Belgium, and France, as he strives to achieve his lifelong dream--to reach the US. Confronted with desperate and terrifying circumstances--both in revolutionary Russia and Nazi Germany--Boris J. Kochanowsky tells a story of loss and survival, of horror and heroism, of struggle and hope.

1103 The Rise of the Airplane: From the Wright Brothers to Lindberg

The airplane flown by Wilbur and Orville Wright at Kitty Hawk was the culmination of centuries of dreams and decades of

gestation by geniuses and tinkerers alike. Its many roles came into full realization in the 1920s, culminating the epochal 1927 flight of Charles Lindbergh across the Atlantic, which forever proved the airplane’s global influence. In a multimedia presentation, aviation expert Paul Glenshaw explores the scientific, cultural, and social

contexts for the invention and rise of the airplane—how it changed the world, how the world changed it, and how a critical period early in the last century launched the wild ride we’ve been on ever since.

1104 Kidnapping, Murder, and Conspiracy - Three Sensational Events in the Lives of 19th Century Jewry

Even as the Western world edged toward modernity in the nineteenth century, some of the most insidious themes

of medieval society persisted in attitudes toward the Jews in Europe and beyond. Some individual Jews caught in extraordinary circumstances became the “canary in the coal mine,” leading to revolutionary change. Three of the most notorious – yet fascinating – stories of the century feature individual Jews, with stories that transfixed people across the world. These cases include the Damascus Affair (1840) in which Syrian Jewish leaders

were accused of murder, leading to their imprisonment and torture, the heartbreaking Mortara Affair (1858) which began with the kidnapping of a six-year-old Italian Jewish boy by the Catholic Church and became an international cause célèbre, and the world-famous Dreyfus Affair (1890s), in which the arrest of a Jewish officer in the French military virtually split fin-de-siècle France in two factions – with reverberations from this case still apparent today. This illustrated lecture broaches themes that reach far beyond each case: we explore the nature of political conspiracy, the struggle between religious and secular rule in Europe, and the birth of political cartooning in mass media.

1105 Washington’s Dupont Circle Neighborhood in the Guilded Age

During the Gilded Age, Dupont Circle was Washington’s undisputed center of wealth, power and status. Over twenty

years, it evolved from small farms and an overrun city cemetery to a community of grand homes for society’s elite. Residents included future president William Taft, inventor Alexander Graham Bell, newspaper publisher Cissy Patterson and many more. From the intimate dinners and receptions of the Cave Dwellers to the lavish balls of Mary Townsend and others in the “smart set,” Dupont Circle marked each social season in the capital. Satirized in

Mark Twain’s novel “The Gilded Age,” the nouveau riche lifestyle of Dupont Circle was fodder for newspaper celebrity gossip. Author Stephen Hansen brings to life the intriguing history of Washington’s famed Dupont Circle.

Music1106 Rock ‘n’ Roll Tells Its Own Story

Rock ‘n’ roll has always been self-aware, telling its own story through songs like Chuck Berry’s “Rock and Roll Music,” covered

by The Beatles, The Beach Boys and many others, Elvis Presley’s “Jailhouse Rock,” Eddie Cochran’s “Twenty Flight Rock,” Bill Haley and the Comets’ “Rock Around the Clock,” even Billy Riley and His Little Green Men’s “Flying Saucers Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Meanwhile, other, mostly older artists were none too happy with the new music

replacing them. Kay Starr wed the new to the old in “Rock and Roll Waltz,” but Pearl Baily admitted “I Can’t Rock and Roll to Save My Soul” and Nat “King” Cole declared, “Mr. Cole Won’t Rock and Roll.” In 1956, Maddox Brothers and Sister Rose recorded “The Death of Rock and Roll,” but two years later, Danny and the Juniors proclaimed “Rock and Roll Is Here to Stay.” And twenty years after that, Bob Seger declared “today’s music ain’t got the same soul” as that “Old Time Rock and Roll.” As The Rolling Stones remind us, “It’s only rock and roll, but I like it”

1109 ”Singular Sensations: “Creators of One (Or Two) Great Musicals

Richard Adler and Jerry Ross created two back-to-back mega hit musicals in the early 1950’s, “The Pajama Game”

(1954) and “Damn Yankees (1955). But their partnership came to a sudden end in 1955 with the death of Ross at the young age of 29. Adler went on to create other shows until his death in 2012 but never achieved the quality of his first two hit shows. Unlike Richard Rodgers, Jule Styne and their many partners who wrote music and lyrics for more than a 100 shows between them, Adler and Ross are only one prominent

example of a number of Broadway creators who only created one or a few musicals each. But some of them are still among the best of the Golden Age of American Musicals such as singular hit shows “Finian’s Rainbow” (1947) by Burton Lane and E.Y.“Yip” Harburg; “Man of La Mancha” (1965), by Mitch Leigh and Joe Dorian; and “A Chorus Line” (1975) by Marvin Hamlisch and Edward Kleban.
