History of Cosmetics in Different Countries

Egypt• Perfume began as a secret

art in Egypt that was perfected by 2500 BC. The function of perfumery was to achieve spiritual rather than physical perfection by perfecting the physical, emotional and mental aspects of human existence.

• Egyptians believe that “to smell beautifully was a sign of holiness”

• Some believed that perfumes could add to one’s personal power

• During the Tang Dynasties in 7th century AD, the Chinese upper classes made lavish use of fragrance

• Their bodies, baths, clothing, homes, and temples all were richly scented.

• China imported jasmine-scented sesame oil from India , Persian rosewater from the silk route, and Indonesian aromatics.

Middle East• A general rule was outlined in

the Quran that read “For Allah loves those who turn to Him constantly and He loves those who keep themselves pure and clean." And “Allah is Beautiful and He loves beauty.”

Henna• was used in India around 4th

and 5th centuries• was used as either hair dye or

paint on people’s hands and feet for Hindu’s wedding
