• There are several hundred different dialects spoken in India• The Union Government of Republic of India made their
official language “Standard Hindi” making it the official language of India
• The Constitution of India states that “The official language of the Union shall be Hindi in Devanagari script.”
• English is known as the secondary official language…. Spoken alongside Hindi and various dialects.
• The constitution has instituted both English and Hindi as the two languages to be used for communication by the Federal government.

• Hindi is based off of Delhi’s dialect: khadiboli• During the Mughal Empire, khadiboli became a
popularly used dialect and eventually transformed into the language known as Urdu (“the language of the court”)
• The Hindutva movement (a movement seeking the creation of a Hindu state) officially formed Hindi as a separate language to Urdu, in the late 19th century.
• The first state of India to accept Hindi as their official language, replacing Urdu, was Bihar.

• As stated by Article 351 of the Indian Constitution, Hindi received much of its’ vocabulary from Sanskrit (the ancient language of India).
• However, today it is written in Devanagari Script.

• In the 2001 Indian census, 258 million people in India reported Hindi to be their native language.
• Hindi has become one of the six most spoken languages in the world.
