History of St. Patrick’s DayTop of the Morn to all you St Paddy lovers, like myself. St Patrick’s Day is more than a celebration of green beer. It observes the death of St Patrick – patron saint of Ireland.

The tradition of wearing the green shamrock became a way for the Catholic population to demonstrate their defiance to the British ruling class. This tradition is tied to folklore that says wearing green makes you invisible to leprechauns, which like to pinch anyone they can see. Some people also think wearing the colour will bring good luck, and others wear it to honour their Irish ancestry. Dressing up in Irish outfits such as a leprechaun or St Patrick is worldwide.

In Irish legend, Leprechauns bury pots of gold at the end of the rainbow. Since a rainbow can only be seen at a distance, the gold is forever elusive.

It is a widely held tradition in Ireland that green beer or whiskey can be consumed on St Patrick’s day. As many as 13 million pints of Guinness are estimated to be consumed on St Patrick’s Day. A traditional dinner would consist of corned beef and cabbage and is often accompanied by classical Irish music and family gatherings.

So whether you wear green, believe in leprechauns and the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow or not enjoy your St Paddy’s day.

What’s Up With JaniceWell, once again, I can’t believe how fast the month has passed, and it is time to March into spring. For the Burnout Queen, it seems each month passing has been so exciting we can’t wait to share with you what we have planned for the upcoming month. This month, we have been doing a lot of “behind the scenes” work to update the website. Check us out and let us know if you like the changes. We have also been focusing on the importance of giving back to the community, and are excited to share our opportunities to do so.

In February, the Burnout Queen and her good friend, Erika from E-Artistry, had the privilege of attending the Hearts and Hero’s Gala in Nisku to support Linx and their projects with persons with developmental disabilities. The food was amazing, and everyone was so friendly and welcoming.

Supporting these organizations allowed me to look deeper at stands for. It prompted me to Think (that change can occur).

I truly believe that through increased awareness, we can de-stigmatize burnout. I Feel that together we have what it takes to make change happen. We are committed to ACT to implement these changes, whether it be through public education or individual and group lunch and learn sessions. We cannot do it alone and need your feedback and support. Help us by “liking us” on Facebook and Instagram, connecting with us on Alignable.com and inviting us to your workplace to provide a corporate seminar or Lunch and Learn. We are also committed to supporting non-profit organizations and charities.

At the core of any changes we want to implement, we must first get a clearer understanding of our identity - what we stand for and how we define ourselves. Our identity is who we ARE – not what we do. At the Burnout Queen, we wanted to identify WHO we are and what we stand for – our mission statement. After a few hours of soul searching, we defined our purpose – “To create an increased awareness of burnout and empower individuals to move from burnout to breakthrough.”

The City of Edmonton Lunch and Learn – February 24th – The Burnout Queen had the opportunity to speak with 60 City of Edmonton employees at their corporate-sponsored Lunch and Learn. It was a lively group, and they were delightful to work

with. Thanks to Jessica and her staff for organizing this event.

Edmonton Public School

Teachers Convention – February 27 & 28 – The Burnout Queen and her good friend Erika, Creative Director at E-Artistry, shared a table for these two days at the convention. It was a pleasure to meet many of the teachers. Many of them stopped to look at her one of a kind, handcrafted magnets, cards, stationery and gifts and make a purchase. If you have not had a chance recently to check out her website at www.e-artistry - don’t wait! She has new items that you don’t want to miss. The Burnout Queen had a draw for a complimentary Lunch and Learn session for one lucky winner and 19 colleagues. Congratulations to the Edmonton teacher who won that prize.

Upcoming EventsMarch 2 – Back to the 90’s Silent Auction & Gala hosted by the Rotary Club of St. Alberta – The Burnout Queen is pleased to donate a gift certificate to support this organization.

Hey Everyone! I’m back to share some of my experiences this month. February is always one of my favourite months because of Valentine’s Day. Even though I did not get any chocolates, we did make dog treats. If any of you have any favourite dog treat recipes you would like

to share or some of your favourite “indestructible dog toys for aggressive chewers,” please let me know. Mom bought me a toy that was advertised as indestructible. HA! I had that wrecked and destroyed within a couple of hours. It was not “Bugsy proof”!

Even though I am not Irish, I am looking forward to celebrating St. Patrick’s Day.

SHOUT OUTS!Here is a rescue organization that desperately needs our support! WHARFWHARF is located at 10724 - 124 Street, Edmonton. They are a non-profit organization that relies on donations from animal lovers like you. Check out their website at www.wharfrescue.ca or call 780-455-4500 for more information about how to volunteer, donate or become a foster parent.

They are always in need of:

- Cat litter; cat food

- Dog collars; any type of dry or wet pet food

- Dog or cat kennels

- Gently used towels or sheets or bedding

- Cleaning supplies such as laundry detergent, bleach or soap

MARCH MADNESS!MARCH MADNESS! Let’s get together and support our dog and cat friends at WHARF. For every donation you make to WHARF in March, mom will match that donation to a maximum of $50.00 per donation. Tell them Bugsy from the Burnout Queen sent you!

Ned’s Wish is another great charity we need to support.

Ned’s Wish: A Cause for Heroes with Paws:

Ned’s Wish is a registered charity committed to supporting law enforcement by providing financial and educational support to enhance the quality of life for K-9 retirees in Canada. After human police officers finish serving their communities, their pension funds support them. Due to the cost of health care for retired police dogs, the potential to enjoy retirement can quite literally rest on a dime. If health care costs become too high, a dog’s quality of life can be significantly reduced or even cut short.

Because the work police dogs do is so physically and mentally demanding, families who adopt retired police dogs can be left with substantial and costly health issues.

For more information about how you can help, please visit their website at www.nedswish.com, email them at [email protected] or contact Stacey Talbot at 780 249-7557.

Tell her the Burnout Queen sent you. Mom will be donating a FIT BIT WATCH as a door prize to their upcoming silent auction and fundraiser.

Acknowledge What’s Working – What’s going well in your life? Recognize the positive accomplishments you have enjoyed lately.Compare Apples to Apples – Look closer at the person or situation you are comparing yourself to. Examine the evidence you have about what led to their achievement – and acknowledge what you don’t know.

Go After Your Goals – If someone is attaining a goal you want to reach, use them as a role model. Study what they’re doing to achieve those accomplishments and integrate those activities into your routine. Build Relationships – Build a strong sense of purpose in your life, as well as relationships and interests that give you satisfaction.

Bugsy’s Minding My Manners - Dog EtiquetteBugsy’s Minding My Manners - Dog EtiquetteThis month mom wants me to share some manners she would like me to start practicing.

1. With spring around the corner, it is no peeing on the neighbour’s lawn.

2. Greet other dogs nicely - no snapping or growling.

3. No jumping up on people to say, “Hi.”

4. No chasing cats!

5. Sit quietly when guests arrive. Mom’s job is to answer the door. My job is to remain calm until the guests arrive, then I can greet them.

6. No begging for food at the table or when mom is cooking.

7. No getting into any food in the car when mom runs into the grocery store.

8. No more being a “bed hog.”

9. No more eating my bones on the furniture.

10. Try not to “pass gas” when sitting on a visitor’s lap.

I would love to hear some of the rules your dog parents have for being “Miss” or “Mr.” Manners.

Testimonials from a Lunch and Learn Session“I liked the facilitator because she shared her personal burnout story, was transparent and open.”

“Great session! Loved the handouts and true stories that Janice shared.”“I enjoyed the signs of burnout quiz and self-help tips. They were practical ideas that I could actually use”.

How to Stop Comparing Yourself to Other People“Comparison can be used positively to attain our goals or negatively to create jealousy, make us feel we are not as successful as others, and their life is much better than ours. Here are some suggestions to avoid these negative feelings. Pay Attention to Your Feelings – The social comparison makes us feel competitive with others who seem to be more successful than we are. It can negatively distort our interpretations. We don’t know their whole story. We only know what we see, and what we see can be distorted. Turn comparison into a competitive edge – When used in a healthy way, comparison can be a powerful motivational tool. Refocus on Your Values – Getting distracted by others’ accomplishments may be an indication that you need to refocus on what’s important to you.

Daylight saving time: some surprising health effects

Staying up late or waking up earlier than usual is not a big deal for most of us. But for some, losing just one hour of sleep due to daylight saving time could have a lasting effect on health and well-being.When daylight saving time starts, clocks “spring forward” by 60 minutes, which throws off our sleep cycles. The loss of just a single hour of sleep takes a physical toll on our bodies. Our internal clocks, often called our circadian rhythms, are thrown off, resulting in increased stress, and poor quality sleep. This, in turn, leaves people tired and stressed causing mood swings, poor work performance, and overall life satisfaction.

Studies have even shown that the “spring forward” to daylight saving time raised the risk of having a heart attack the following Monday by 24 percent compared to other Mondays during the year.

After a “period of adjustment” of about a week, the health issues—sleep disruption, moodiness, poor work performance, cardiovascular problems—returned to normal. Regular exercise, talk therapy, and mood lamps can all help people who struggle to adjust to the time change. Here are some tips for adjusting:

Get as much light as possible when you wake up – this is “by far the most effective way to jump-start the change. Your body sets its rhythm in large part by light.

Exercise in the morning – this gets you up and moving, as well as exposing you to light and raising your body temperature – all great ways to wake your body up.

Go to bed at your regular time on the Saturday night before the clocks change.

Don’t over-caffeinate – enjoy your morning cup, but don’t change your caffeine routine by chugging a mug or two in the afternoon because you feel a slump.

Don’t take a nap – this will disrupt your bedtime sleep routine and take longer for your body to adjust to the time change.
