Indiana Delta Chapter President Andrea Lyonshas brought about great changes to Pi Beta Phiduring the Spring semester. Her outgoing na-ture and wonderful sense of humor is a delightthat many ladies at Pi Beta Phi enjoy. Sheserved as Pi Beta Phi Historian from Spring2003 to Fall 2004. She also served on thePanhellenic Board of Directors as Director ofPublic Relations. Her desire to serve both thegreek community as well as her chapter is a tes-timony to her hard work and dedication. Wecertainly appreciate all that she has done for ourchapter, and what she will do for the semesterahead.

After calculating my 48-plus hours spent on compiling asemester’s worth of activities--that is 16 weeks of academia, socials, and events--I have finally arrived to my “historian’snote page.” This being the last page of the project, I couldsimply just list details about myself and end the process. However, since I put some time and effort into thisproject, Iwill put some effort into my note as well. This position has notjust taught me the simple tasks of holding a camera steadyand taking photos, or learning how to type captions. It hastaught me that, although, this is a one person position, it re-quires the help of many. From utilizing sources such asalumnaes, to interest groups, to chapter members, they all play a vital role in this process. I wantto thank all the ladies of Pi Beta Phi, both old and present, for all of their help. As you read on,I hope you are able to enjoy the many successes of this semester--as it is now a part of the richhistory of the Indiana Delta Chapter of Pi Beta Phi.

Deanna Ho, PC ‘03, Chapter Historian

Cheers! Deanna Y. Ho

Taking care of business? (l-r) Executive membersAbbi Garringer, Kristin Weaver, Lauryn Runge, andHaley Baker enjoyed this year’s executive retreat atthe Pro Nail Salon. Executive members pamperedtheir nails before getting down to business. The ex-ecutive team spent the rest of the day discussingthe semester goals for the chapter. Of course it wasmuch easier to think with a nice new nail polish.

With over 80 girls living at 1012 State Street, life at Pi Beta Phi would not have been com-plete without the help of some very important people. Our house staff. Carol Gott and LouiseLinder arrive early in the morning and depart in the afternoon, leaving the Pi Phi house spot-lessly clean. Lisa Hall, our daytime cook, is always on hand to serve us the most nutritiouslunches. At night, Ed Whiteley, is always willing to grill-out for the ladies. Pi Phis enjoy thecompany of all house staff members as they are an intricate part of our lives here at Pi BetaPhi.

The 2004 Sorority recruitment process saw some changes, but nevertheless, PiPhis still had another successful year. This year’s recruitment process was split intoa fall weekend for open houses, and continued with casuals, cokes, and suits day inearly January. Recruitment Chair, Amanda Jordan, certainly handled the changeswith great poise. She made sure songs were perfected, decorations were flawless, and the skit was well-rehearsed. Once again, with great leadership from all aroundthe house, Pi Phis were able to attract a new and amazing pledge class, yet anothergroup of magnificent women to carry on the Pi Phi name.

On the third day of recruitment, potential new memberswere welcomed to PiBeta Phi by some quite peculiarcharacters dressed in jump-suits, bandanas, and boas.Of couse this was all part of the “cokes invitational” day. This year, Pi Phis rehearsed the skit to perfection andperformed it at all six parties. Skits entertained the newmembers and offered them a glimpse into our chapter’sspirit and personality.

Casting call? These girls are ready to perform.

Since potential new members had already completed the “open house”round, the casuals invitational occured first when girls arrived back fromthe Winterbreak. The following day was the “Coke’s invitational.”

As tradition would have it here at the Indiana Deltachapter, the 2002 pledge class decorated “Pi PhiHeaven,” while the 2003 pledge class took on thedaunting task of hanging over 30,000 stars madeof foil. “Pi Phi Heaven” occurs on the last andfinal day of recruitment. Potential new membersget the chance to listen to seniors of Pi Beta Phireflect on the positive influence and impact thatmembership in Pi Beta Phi has given them.

Members of the 2003 pledge class take a break in “Pi Phi Heaven.”

Oh the excitement of meeting fresh, new faces! Bid Night is the first nightthe new members get to spend with Pi Phis. We welcomed the new girls intoPi Beta Phi with a formal dinner and a night of bowling. Unlike years past, thejunior pledge class took on the role as “Beta Buddy” this year. Beta Buddiesassist and guide the new members during the first few weeks of pledgeship.

Members of the junior pledge class were on hand to enjoy the “bowling frenzy” as well.

Pledgeship is one of the most memorable and excitingaspects of Greek life experience. It is a time of fun, friend-ship, learning and growing. It is a period of orientationsand responsibilities. The pledges of the 2004 pledge classwere taught in a eight-week period by our Vice PresidentSocial, Molly Gallagher. Pi Beta Phi’s history as well asprinciples were taught to the new members to help themhave a better understanding of our chapter.

New Member Serenadesfebruary 17

Annie McCarty(left) receives a bag ful of gifts fromher big sis, Jackie Pike.

“Big Sis Night was a lot of fun. It was exciting to find out who your big sis was going to be and who you weregoing to live with next semester. After Big Sis Night, I was excited to go to the house more because I hadsomeone to visit. Big Sis Night made me feel like a real part of the house.” ~Annie McCarty (pictured above), PC ‘04

Part of the fun and excitement of pledgeship involved the opportuni-ties for the new members to participate in serenades with the chap-ter. This year’s pledge class created a serenade in which they per-formed to announce our formal dance, Beaux and Arrows. The per-formance was a wonderful show put on by the chapter as it show-cased the talented new pledge class.

Big Sis Night is a very special night for boththe new pledges and the sophomore pledgeclass members. After a month of pledgeship, the new girls get the opportunity to select asophomore member as their “Big Sis.” TheBig Sis program serves to provide the newmembers with a guiding and promisingfriendship that will last forever between thetwo.

The cold and windy conditions did not deter the new members from enjoying their “spotlight” day. The newmembers posed for pictures on the front lawn, and most importantly took on the traditional task of stopping trafficon State Street for a picture.

“My favorite part of initiation was stop-ping traffic on State Street. It is a greatand fun tradition that makes inititiationextra special for Pi Phis.”

“It’s so hard to say goodbye to yester-day...” As the spring semester came toan end, many senior Pi Phis were juststarting new chapters in their lives. Some will be heading out into theworkforce, while others continue theireducation in graduate school. Eitherway, the doors at “1012 State” willalways remain open to welcome themin.

Membership chairman, MeganWallace, organized the “Senior Week”festivities. We kicked off the week withsenior fortunes, answering machines, and roundtables on Monday. Tuesdaysaw crazy hats and old t-shirts givenaway at senior wills. Finally, on Thurs-day we had a cookout followed by aperformance from the newpledgeclass.

Welcoming in the girls. Like most years, thisyear’s senior pledge class rallied together towelcome in the new pledge class with a grandentrance and a rhythmic beat.

Yum, yum. These seniors are enjoyingsome of the tasty food from the seniorcookout.

Let us sing. The new pledge class createda song to pay tribute to the outgoing seniorpledge class. The song selection was“Mambo #5.” The song’s lyrics incorporatedall of the names of the seniors.

Alumnaes of Pi Beta Phi here in West Lafayette, Indiana play an intricate role in the suc-cess of our chapter. Many local Pi Phis donate their time by being actively involved withour chapter’s community service projects. Not only that, many alumnaes often take timeout of their schedules to visit and talk to active Pi Phis during dinner. This year’s AlumnaeAdvisor Committee and House Board Corporation came to several dinners in which theywere able to meet and converse with each pledge class. Their time and effort is greatlyappreciated by our active members.

Alumnae, Alice Arthur, and Jamie Werling spend timedecorating cookies for the Greentree Nursing Home.

April 14

Sisterhood retreat is an all house ac-tivity where sisters are able to enjoy afun activity organized by our Vice Presi-dent Moral, Ashley Orchard. This yearour retreat involved the competitiveside of sports. The members gatheredtogether with unifying pledge class t-shirts to partake in a friendly game offlag football at the Purdue intramuralfields. The sophomore pledge class--colored green--came out victorious.

(top) Hello to the girls abroad! We could not forget the memberswho spent their semester studying abroad, so the house mem-bers decided to send a friendly greeting via photo. The sign abovereads “ A world apart, but close at heart.”

What’s in a t-shirt? This year we were given t-shirts that symbolized our pledge classes’ year.Pledge class 2002 received blue, pledge class2003 received green, while the new pledge classreceived purple t-shirts. The back of the t-shirtscame with the catchy saying “Friendship is likepeeing in your pants. Everyone can see it, butonly you can feel its true warmth.”

Many Pi Phis and their moms enjoyed the luxurious day at Christina’s Nail andSpa Salon. After the relaxing experience, the mothers and daughters gathered at the PiBeta Phi house for a nice brunch. Pi Beta Phi’s Founders’ Day presentation was also given.

This year, Pi Phis came out kicking. We were able tomuster a 2-0 win against Gamma Phi Beta, whichlaunched us into the 2nd round. However, we faced adifficult challenge in the eventual champions, AlphaChi Omega. The game against Alpha Chi Omega wasintense, as we forced them into a sudden death shoot-out.

With the Easter holiday rolling around, Pi Phis do-nated their time by participating in Alpha Xi Delta’sand the Panhellenic Association’s annual EasterEgg Hunt. After dinner, themen of Phi Beta Sigma performed a “step show”, which is part of their tradition they hold intheir chapter. The night was fun and informative as both chapters were able to get a glimpse ofeach other’s chapter heritage.

We enjoyed each others’company as well as pizzas and sodas for refreshments. This year’s game featured the New En-gland Patriots versus the Carolina Panthers. Andrea Lyons, Chapter President and Massachusettnative, was extremely excited for the Super Bowl XXXVIII game.

“Beaux and Arrows was so much fun! Ihad a great time dancing with myfriends. Formal wear was a nice

spon•ta•ne•ous (spon taynee ess) adj. arising from natural impulse or inclination, ratherthan from planning or in response to suggestions from others

Now, the word ‘spontaneous’ may appear in Webster’s Dictionary in this manner, but in Greeklife here at Purdue University, the word has a different meaning. Spontaneous is an event thatoccurs...well...spontaneously. Girls are unaware of a themed-social until the morning of the event.Members are given a day to find a date and a costume to the party. Kristy Hartman, our SocialChair, planned two spontaneous events this year--one themed “School Girls” and the other themed“Breakfast Club.” The Breakfast club theme initiated memories of the fall football season whenfans would dress up in halloween costumes.

Plaid skirts, white blousses, and ties. These girls are ready for the“school night” rather than the “school day.”

A sumo wrestler (Deanna Ho), a cheer-leader (Kim Dusich), and a Fairy (BeckyLaird) showed up at the 2nd Sponta-neous themed “Breakfast Club.”
