    KEY CONCEPTS11 th -12 th Centuries

    1. A Sacrament means sign or symbol. A visible sign, aperceptible symbol of something invisible and sacred.

    2. The invisible or sacred reality, to which the sign bearswitness is GRACE. Gods free gift of his love to menand women.

    3. These sacraments or signs stem from Gods ownrevelation in Jesus, who in some way instituted theseChristian sacraments.

    These three concepts continued to be sharpeneduntil one arrives at that well-known definition:

    Sacraments are external signs instituted byChrist to give grace.

    Then in the light of Vatican II, SacramentalTheology will also be connected with Living

    1. Baptism : a ritual ordinarily administered toinfants and strongly connected to

    theory of original sin. The graceof baptism removed one from thisstate and brought one into the

    family of God.

    2. Eucharist : no doubt a sacred ritual in theChurch, traced back to the Last

    Supper. Jesus is really present inthe bread and wine. Theory of transubstantiation embryonic

    stage.

    3. Penance : Celtic form, penitential ritual, couldbe received frequently, fairly

    private, almost completelysupplanted the old Roman formwhich was public and administered

    only once.

    4. Order : By 11 th century, not only for priestsand deacons, but also forsubdiaconate and for the many minororders. Generally considered asacrament. Consecration of bishopwas not considered a sacrament yet.

    5. Anointing : By the 11 th century had become apriestly function. Earlier it was

    administered by lay men and women.

    However during the Carolingian Reform,anointing of the sick and the dying was (8 th C.-)associated with forgiveness of sinswhich was a reserved to priests

    alone. Towards the 11 th and 12 th,sacrament of the dying.(extreme unction)

    6. Confirmation : by the 11 th century, in the Westconfirmation had been separated from baptism

    and administered around the age of ten. A ritein which one begins to be a soldier of Christ .(imagery might be related to Crusades

    religiously sanctioned military campaignsduring the 11 th-13 th cent.)

    7. Marriage : A ritual but not yet considered asacrament, since the issue of sexuality posed

    Baptism and Eucharist clearly go back to thetime of Jesus, and there is a date for this in theNew Testament itself.

    BAPTISM

    The first sacrament of initiation whereby aperson is incorporated into the Christian

    community, cleansed from original sin, andreceives new life (sanctifying grace) in
