What is a castle?A castle is a place where all of

the kings use to keep their

army. Kings use to split theirarmies up in to different

    places in England and have

    different castles. The castles

were mainly for protectingthe soldiers and somewhere

for them to live. Also it was

    for protecting the kings,

    Queens, princes etc.

    Motte and baily castles

    where replaced by stone

    keep motte and baily castles.

The stone keep motte and baily

castle is better than the motte

    and baily castle because the

stone keep has a stone wall

which makes it a lot stronger

and safer for the people in side.

But it also has another feature

that the motten baily does not

have the stone keep has an

edge on the bottom of the keep

so if they break the wall they

can drop rocks on to the edge

and they bounce off to hit the

other people. And it was made of

    brick.

Stone keep castle wherereplaced by Concentric castles

    which were virtually impossible

    Concentric castles

    where the newest

    castles of their time

    it was virtually

    impossible to

    conquer because it

    had all of the new

    features like the

    round towers the

    murder holes and

had a massive hill and a

wooden keep on top of it,

    and then there was a

    staircase going down to

the baily. In the baily there

    were houses sables and a

hall to eat. On the outside

This is a catapult it was used

to throw heavy objects at the

castle. But the trick was that

they were far away so it wasout of arrow distance so

    know body got hurt.

This is a siege tower it was

used to push up against the

    wall and load many soldiers

in at a time. This was good

    because they wouldnt have

to wait to knock down the

    walls.

A crossbow was used by the

    soldiers to carry in their

    hands and there special thing

is that it was light and

    powerful.

    How castles defended

themselve sCastles were defended by several active and

passive systems;the active systems included the presence of

trained archers on the ramparts and various systemsfor dropping heavy stones or burning oil on theattackers.

The passive systems included their construction ofheavy stone walls, moats, drawbridges, andlandscaping which allowed attackers no place tohide. Most castles also featured a redoubt (asecondary walled building inside the main castle

exterior) to which the lord could retreat. The architecture of the crenelated castle walls wasalso assistance as the defending archers could havewide field of view to shoot towards while remaininghidden from the attackers.

They were the stronger kind of

towers. Much bigger than a normal wall.Even though they were more expensive to

build, they were stronger; thus their

    enormous use.

    Defenders would throw boiling water

at their victims; making the fall. This was

a very deadly way to stop the invaders'

progression; the only downside was that

getting boiling water was not very easy.

Fire was used and it took a while. If the

    invaders attacked continuously, the

boiling water wouldn't last and other ways

to stop them were used. These where

    called murder holes.

Thewe a ponsIn the towers on the corners

    of the castle there were

    archers that fired bow and

    arrows at the enemy.

    Also they threw rocks

down the side of the castle

then it would bounce of the

edge at the bottom of the

    On the sides of the

    towers thee where

    people with crossbows

    that had a longer range

    than the bow and

    arrows.

    The other method the knights

did was miming. It was digging

    under the Castles whilst putting

logs to support the Castle then

crawl back out , then pull the

logs then some of the Castle

    would come loose, then about

half the Castle would fall down.
