WHY A WIKI AND NOT FACEBOOK, LINKED IN or other software?

Actually is being used by Wisconsin 4-H!

Different types of software and internet experience have there own positives and negatives.

For collecting history and colloboration wiki software is unique.

Let’s at each software a bit…

facebook

WHY NOT FACEBOOK ?Facebook is:• good at checking status, pokes, chat• difficult for looking up older content– things get buried–where is the Facebook archive?

• content owner & users must register• not good with privacy & security issues.• not good with indexed content.

WHY NOT Linked ?

• LinkedIn has some similarity to Facebook which brings similar disadvantages such as:– users must register with Linked In– not great with indexed content

• LinkedIn is frequently associated with searches for jobs and networking with others in related industries or types of work.

WHAT ABOUT OTHER WIDELY AVAILABLE SOFTWARE?

• You ? Great for sharing video but not for sharing text and communication.

• Flickr? Great for sharing photos, but not quite right for what the wiki can do.

• A blog? – best suited to a single narrator & commenters, but not many contributors.

• A website?- not enough tools for collaboration.
