DIAGNOSIS OF HIV

NARRATOR/ DOCTOR:So I have just received the testresults, and I'm sorry to say thatyou are HIV positive.

But we have lucky found the virusin the early stages.

HIV or also known as HumanImmunodeficiency Virus, is a virusthat attacks the immune system,which is the body's naturaldefences against illness.

HIV is commonly passed on person toperson through unprotected sex oruse of dirty needles during drug

use.

There are two main types of HIV,HIV-1 is the most common type andis found worldwide and HIV-2 ismainly found in Western Africa.

Now understanding to what HIV isand how it infects your body isimportant when it comes topreventing and treating the virus.

The HIV virus attacks the whiteblood cells, which are known as theT-helper cells. These cells helpyou body fight off diseases andinfections.

HIV can't grow or reproduce on itsown. It will create copies of itsself inside the white blood cells,which will damage the immune systemand will gradually weaken yournatural defences.

If HIV is left untreated, it cantake a few years for Aids todevelop, which is when HIV hasseverely damaged the immune system.
