HIV/AIDS PROJECT
AIESEC IBADAN NIGERIA
ASK PROJECT
MISSION
According to UNAID statistics, 3.5million Nigerians out of a total of 28.5 million
people in sub-Saharan Africa are infected with HIV/AIDS. Nigeria’s epidemic is
characterized by one of the most rapidly increasing HIV/AIDS cases in West Africa
with adult HIV prevalence reaching 5.8 percent in 2001. USAID also estimates that
by 2010, 3 million new AIDS cases will be recorded if the status quo is maintained.
In a developmental context, the only long-run sustainable strategy for prevention
of HIV/AIDS is a conscious change in behavior. The risk of HIV infection is
dependent upon the degree to which one practices high-risk behavior. Behavioral
change is attributed to a number of elements, one of the most prominent ones
being education.
While there exist a bevy of initiatives around youth education on HIV/AIDS, few are
designed by the youth for the youth. The ownership of the problem is the first step
to developing a solution. Based on current statistics, this ownership has yet to
reach a critical mass among the youth in Africa and the world at large. Most of the
essential information has been generated; sadly little of it has been consciously
assimilated. These were some of the reasons to create the ASK Project. A project
created and run by African young people providing Answers, Solutions and
Knowledge around HIV/AIDS issues.

CONTENT
The ASK project commences with the selection of a team to commence
it’s implementation and execution. Exchange participants are recruited
to participate in the project.
The members of the team are trained by the
Trainee Nominee which are NGOs given to the
cause of reducing the effect of the epidemic.
The exchange participants together with the
NGOs design a 5 week (minimum) training
module for the students. It includes
HIV/AIDS general knowledge and peer education techniques
(learning modules to be provided)
Volunteering with HIV/AIDS NGOs (a minimum of 6 hours to
ensure practical knowledge)
General leadership skills sessions (effective communication,
presentation…) Optimal delivered by an external partner or AIESEC
alumni
Basic project development and implementation skills (Planning…)
Optimal delivered by an external partner or AIESEC alumni
The project climaxes with a COME AND ASK day involving a seminar
where the students showcase what they have learnt and experts are
invited to examine the issue.

About NIGERIA
Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa; the eighth most populous country in the
world. Nigeria is a federal constitutional republic comprising thirty-six states and its
Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. It became an independent country in 1960 and a
republic in 1963.
Nigeria has one official language: English, but there are several other languages
spoken (205 estimated) out of which three are the most commonly spoken. There is
Yoruba spoken by the Yoruba’s (in the western part of the country Ile-Ife inclusive),
there is Ibo spoken by the Ibo’s (in the southern-eastern part of the country) and also
Hausa spoken in the North and central parts of the country. Apart from these languages
there is a common language to all the tribes called Pigeon it is a form of broken English,
that when spoken sounds like bad English, but it is actually very understandable when
you listen to it long enough.
