Safety Corner From the Danger Rangers at Hixson 

Here  at Hixson,  there  are  numerous  construction 

projects  going  on  throughout  all  of  our  facilities. 

Not one building will go untouched during this vast 

expansion project. For this reason we would like to 

take this opportunity to remind all of our employ‐

ees and visitors to be extra careful during this time 

of construction. 

Many  things will  be  temporarily  relocated.  There 

may  be  extension  cords  in  use,  ladders  or  other 

equipment in places where there wasn’t just a few 

hours  prior.    Heavy  equipment  is  being  used  in 

front of and between  the buildings and  there are 

open trenches and rough pavement in other areas. 

Even  though our  contractors  are working with us 

to minimize  the  impacts of  these  activities,  there 

will  be  hazards  that  get  missed  or  quite  simply 

cannot  be  completely  avoided.  Please  pay  close 

attention  to  your  surroundings over  the next  few 

months  for  these  new  potential  hazards.  Please 

obey all caution signs,  taped off hazard areas and 

safety cones. 

If you see any hazards that need to be addressed, 

please don’t hesitate  to  contact  your manager or 

escort  for  our  visitors.  You  can  also  contact  any 

member  of  the  Danger  Ranger  Team  any  time. 

Please be safe, there are a  lot of people out there 

counting on you to come home in one piece.

Supporting Flight

Hixson  is undergoing our biggest  construction project 

since our initial buildings were built back in the 1960’s!  

This  is  a  very  exciting  time  for our  company  and has 

been a long time coming. We have invested thousands 

of  hours  and millions  of  dollars  in  the  pre‐planning, 

design and  the purchase of new equipment  for  these 

projects  that  are  finally  becoming  a  reality. Our  con‐

struction plans consist of the following: 

New Anodize Line 

It’s  literally  been  years  in  the  making,  but  the  new 

Hixson anodize line will be completed in 2016. The new 

line will be located behind the existing anodize  line, in 

building 2 in a newly constructed area and will include 

the following: 

All new modern tanks 

All new control systems & rectifiers 

All  new  auxiliary  equipment,  including  high  effi‐ciency chillers and heat exchangers 

State of the art filtration and scrubbing systems 

Upgraded safety grating and restraints 

 

Paint Department Expansion All Under One Roof 

Hixson  is  expanding  our  paint  department  with  the 

addition of a brand new paint booth along with a new 

oven.  In  addition  to  the  new  equipment, we will  be 

relocating  one  of  our  existing  booths  and  two  ovens 

into our building number four. The goal of all of this is 

to expand and consolidate all operations related to the  

paint process  into  a  single building.  This will  increase 

our  capacity and  greatly  improve our production effi‐

ciency. Equally important, with our paint process com‐

pleted  from  start  to  finish,  under  one  roof, with  the 

best  filtration equipment  in  the  industry, our commit‐

ment and goals to lower emissions will be achieved. 

Electrical Infrastructure Upgrades 

With all of the new equipment going in, and to ensure 

we will have enough electrical power for future expan‐

sions, we are upgrading all of the electrical systems  in 

buildings one through four. These upgrades will almost 

double  the amount of power available. This will allow 

Hixson to move forward with all our current plans and 

also allow us to expand even further in the future with 

new equipment and processes. 

All of these upgrades and improvements will not only 

allow Hixson to grow, but also establish Hixson as the 

cleanest  and  most  environmentally  friendly  metal 

finishing company in the world!

Over the last 7 years, Steico has been an amazing success 

story. As they grew, so did Hixson. We are always looking 

at ways  to  further  enhance  our  partnership  and  as  the 

volume has continued to grow we have aligned our com‐

panies  even  closer.  Today Hixson  operates  a  dedicated 

“Steico Cell” consisting of:

We  look  forward  to many more  years  of  growth with Steico! 

Hixson and Steico Industries started our partnership back 

in  2009.  At  that  time  Steico  had  been  searching  for  a 

metal  finishing  supplier  that  could  share  their  vision  of 

helping  them  become  the word  leader  in  the  Precision 

Tube  and Weld  Assembly  Industry.  Steico  even  consid‐

ered  purchasing  a  metal  finishing  facility  themselves, 

because they know how critical the part processing is for 

their overall success. 

After  several  failed  attempts with  other metal  finishing 

facilities,  Steico  approached  Douglas  Greene  (President 

of Hixson) with an offer to become production partners. 

This led to many discussions on how to think outside the 

box  when  it  came  to  the  traditional  customer/vendor 

relationship in our industries. What transpired was a sole 

sourced partnership with an agreed upon pricing meth‐

Non‐Destructive  Testing  (NDT)  is  a group  of  analysis  techniques  used  to evaluate  the  properties  of  a  material, component, or  system without  causing damage. This  is one of the most critical disciplines  within  aerospace  structural design.  Hixson  staffs  its  own  in‐house ASNT  Level  III  supported  by  a  team  of Level  II  inspectors  specializing  in Mag‐netic  Particle,  Liquid  Penetrant,  Hard‐ness and Conductivity Testing.  

The  oil  and whiting method  used  in  the  railroad industry in the early 1900s was the first recognized use  of  the  principles  of  penetrants  to  detect cracks.  The  oil  and  whiting  method  used  an  oil solvent for cleaning followed by the application of a whiting or chalk coating, which absorbed oil from the  cracks  revealing  their  locations.  Soon,  a  dye was added to the  liquid. By the 1940s, fluorescent or visible dye was added  to  the oil used  to pene‐trate test objects. 

Experience  showed  that  temperature  and  soak time were  important. This  started  the practice of written  instructions  to  provide  standard,  uniform results. The use of written procedures has evolved, giving  the  ability  for design  engineers  and manu‐facturers to get the high standard results from any properly  trained  and  certified  liquid  penetrant testing technician.
