    Huddersfield Jazz Guitar Society

    Newsletter No. 24 August 2013

    Hi Jazz Guitar Fans,

True to form. Last months players night got off the ground with the usual Tom

Prior solo spot. Appropriately, he chose to honour the late great Johnny Smith, with aquirky rendition of his most famous tune: Walk Dont Run. He began by playing thetune out of tempo, in a rhapsodic, baroque-like, fashion complete with the stylistictierce de Picardie (changing from minor to major by raising the 3rd) for the conclusionof each A section. To continue the quasi-classical treatment Tom, effectively, seguewayd into Pagannis 24th caprice bringing the performance to an end with anothertierce de Picardie! Given Smiths predilection for classical music and especially Bach;the master of the baroque, Toms dedication was a sincere and well thought outgesture.

Martin Chung joined him for a reading of Nuages. Tom went first, with lots of

slides and fast chromatic glissandos followed by a contrasting Martin, who played withhis usual technical flare but little that one would readily associate with Django!

Darren Dutson-Bromley had devised aguitar quiz whereby a short sample of Satin Dollwas played and HJGS members were requiredto identify the player. These examples wereplayed, one at a time, during player changeoverand the first of these followed Tom and Martinsset.

The next player was Adam Hinchlliffesporting a recently acquired, and very beautiful,Epiphone Sheraton. Adams jazz work iscoming on in leaps and bounds. His solorendition of Errol Garners Misty featured apleasing combination of chording and single-line work, all played in an equally relaxed rubato style.

    Following quiz question #2, Dave

Vangelderen and Chris Brown gave us twotunes, starting with Heres That Rainy Day,taken as a bossa, but with an usually uppishtempo. Nice arrangements and tasteful linesfrom both players. We have heard theirsecond tune, Jeannine, many times before. On this occasion it was taken a little slower, which allowed the tunes modal feel to bemore prevalent. This tune, coming from theWes/Cannonball/Miles, 58-64, modal

inflected period fits the guitar brilliantly and iscertainly a strong feature for their duo.

Interestingly, Daves guitar was suffering from a problem shared by Ians guitar(played by Jamie later on), that of string imbalance. Its an irritating problem, I (Ian)have spent hours balancing a guitars pickup using one amp only to find it completelydifferent with another amp. Its unsettling for the player and grating on the listenersears.

Following another quiz example, Robin Thomas and Charles Adamczuk gaveus another two tunes dedicated to Johnny Smith. Out of Nowhere was apparently

Smiths version but curiously lackedany of the long stretch, close-voicedpiano chords he was famous for.Methinks this was more of a RobinThomas version than a JS one!Nevertheless, it was well played and anice tribute. Their second tune: ThereWill Never Be Another You, didntsettle down rhythmically, owing to itsfast clip which was interpreted

differently by each player.Consequently, this was a rather lumpyperformance, which was a shame asboth players made a good contribution, nice lines and, as ever, some tastyKesselish block-chording from Robin.

The next quiz question was followed by Dave Vangelderens conciseexamination of the harmonic skeleton to All The Things There Are. This was clearand illuminating, detailing the many modulations (the tune is known in the business asAll the Chords There Are!) and resulting tonal centres. Daves manner, clarity of

speech and diction, no doubt the result of years of teaching, projected andcommunicated very well and he may well have recruited several new students on thestrength of this presentation! Well done Dave, Whats your next tune going to be?

Following yet another quiz question, by now they were resulting in much funand merriment, the Idle Guits, led byDarren Dutson-Bromley, gave renditionsof Greensleeves and Dont Get AroundMuch Anymore. Everyone was reading:a rare sight and heartening to witness,

and the tunes were very well played, withthe five guitars making a fantastic sound! So come on guys get working on some ofthose Tony Rizzi arrangements of CharlieChristian for five guitars, in time for theChristmas Showcase!!!

Its good to see Jamie Holroyd attending more regularly these days. He is an

exceptional young player who hasrecently completed the course atLeeds College of Music and who hascome on in leaps and bounds.Following another quiz question, Jamiewas joined by Adrian Ingram to playTerry Smiths Early Morning Groove,

from Terrys brilliant 1968 Fall Outalbum. This was followed, appropriately on this occasion, by AllThe Things There Are. Both tunessounded fantastic with delightfulinterplay. In fact several members ofthe audience were convinced that these tunes had been rehearsed.

The final quiz question was followed by Jez Platt and Martin Chung; their usualhelping of soulful, funk jazz, being verymuch to the fore on Feel Like MakingLove. This was followed by KennyBurrells perennial Chitlins Con Carne, from the classic Midnight Blue album.Flowing virtuoso lines with a feel-good,funk vibe very much in contrast to rest ofthe nights more straight-ahead fare.

    2. ii-V-I lick in C major.

The opening bar of the lick is a Dm7 arpeggio with the addition of two chromatic notes. These are chromatic approach tones and are where you can approach a chord tone with anote a semitone below or above. C# leads on to the note D, a chord tone. A# leads onto theB in the next bar, again a chord tone from a G7 chord. The Eb in the second bar implies ab13, the scale here is a G phrygian dominant. The last three notes of bar two are an exampleof a thing called enclosure, the target note is B and it is approached from a note above, C

then a note below Bb before landing on the B. The last bar is an Em triad.

    Workshop/seminars

Please note that in order to ensure an effective combination of complete

workshop and some time for playing, these sessions will commence at 8:30on the dot.

    Of Interest, News and Reviews

Found anything on the web or heard of something which may interest our members, thenthis is the place for it.

George Barnes - Keepin Out of Mischief.Cumquat Records CQCD-2750.

I review this as an unashamed George Barnes fan.

Barnes has fallen off the jazz guitar radar and never

seemed to achieve the prominence of his

contemporaries such as Les Paul. He was however aconsummate musician as these tracks show. Of the

27 tracks on this cd, tracks 13 27 were recordedaround 1947 with the George Barnes Octet whilst he

was a staff musician in Chicagos radio studios, and

previously formed the greater part of cd 2 ofThe

George Barnes Octet The Complete Standard Transcriptions (Soundies SCD

4122). Tracks 1 - 12 were recorded in 1952 after his move to New York and first

appeared on the Grand Award album, Guitar In Velvet (GA 33-358), but this is, I

believe, the first time they have appeared on cd.

All of the tunes, arranged by Barnes, are lovely vignettes very characteristic of

their time (listen to the Joe Mooney Quartet and Nat King Cole Trio). Great tight

arrangements, unusual and inventive instrument voicings and sparkling guitar are all

there to delight and surprise. Whilst the tunes do not showcase his improvisational skill

as much as his later work with for example, Ruby Braff, they do still display his total

mastery of the instrument, and musical form, which made him the most sought after

    studio musician of his time.

These recordings are a must have for the modern guitarist; not only are they greatto listen to, but they offer valuable lessons in economy, humour and sheer musicality.

All skills which have no time limit.

Jazz Guitar From Across The PenninesMonday June 3rd Head of Steam

  • 8/22/2019 HJGS Newsletter 24 Aug13

    9/16

    9

On a warm summer evening, a cool and refreshing breeze was provided by three of the

Pennines favourite jazz guitarists, Adrian Ingram, Chris Walker, and Paul Hartley.

Adrian started the gig on home turf doing what he does best, bebop and blues. Alone

Together had a nice crunchy Kessel-esc pedal vamp before the solos. Cotton Tail

followed and a groove based Cant Buy Me Love closed the first trio set, featuring

some tasty carefully interweaved Beatles themes within the guitar solo.

Paul followed with two wonderful renditions of the lesser known standards, Old Folks

and Shiny Stockings coaxing some lovely warm sounds from his early 50s P-90

    equipped 175 plugged into a Peterson P100.

A quartet was formed when Chris came to the stage with his late 50s ES-125 to playthe Latin tinged The Night Has a Thousand Eyes. Chris then took over with a trio

arrangement ofWhen Sunny Gets Blue showcasing his impressive chordal chops.

When a group of guitarists get together, its only a matter of time before they play ablues, and Tenor Madness ended the first set. This provided the guitar geeks (all 3

HJGS members who actually turned up) with a good opportunity to compare the sound

of Chris and Pauls Gibson archtops with Adrians ES-335.

Chris and Paul kicked off the second set playing a few duets together; The Days of

Wine Roses (with the unusual Toots Thielemans/Bill Evans key change to Ab) and the

    Jobim bossa Triste.

Adrian joined the other guitarists for My Romance and Bernies Tune. The rhythm

section was invited back up for a final blow over I Remember April and in true guitar

concert fashion, all three jazz guitarists ended up soloing at the same time by the final

    chorus of trading.

A great close to a fantastic night of jazz guitar, but I suspect these jazz guitar nights will

only be able to continue if the support from HJGS improves.

    San Sebastian

Ron Carter - BassRussell Malone GuitarMulgrew Miller Piano

The German record label In and Out captured the

performance by the Golden Striker Trio in San Sebastian

on the last evening of their 2012 European tour. The trio

consists of bassist Ron Carter, guitarist Russell Malone

and pianist Mulgrew Miller who sadly died on the 29th

May this year. The trio had originally played together on

the 2003 album The Golden Striker on Blue Note.

The album consists of five pieces, Samba de Orfeu, My Funny Valentine, The Golden Striker,

the John Lewis piece from which the group took its name and two Ron Carter originals.

The album begins gently with a masterful chordal introduction played by Russell Malone

before been joined by Miller and Carter for a subtle and understated performance of Ron

Carters composition Candle Light. This piece seemed to take a while to settle, for the first

five minutes it seemed almost as if each of the instruments were in competition with one

another. This was very much Malones piece and he threw it all in there, single notes, chord

    melody, harmonics and string bends.

The next piece My Funny Valentine began with a delightfully sparse rendition of the themeby Miller before been joined by Carter. The piece remains as a duet with Carter

    complimenting Millers lines admirably.

Track three and Malone is back in the band, this time for another Carter composition

Saudale. This begins with a master class on how to play rhythm guitar and chordal

accompaniment with a pianist. This is something Malone excels at and has played in many

successful bands with pianists such as Monty Alexander and Diana Krall. It is with this piece

that the trio really start playing as a band, the telepathy and empathy which accompany

great jazz musicians is appearing and this is chamber jazz at its finest with all players

contributing equally to create beautiful music.

Samba de Orfeu sees the trio moving back to a duo this time it is Malone and Carter with

Malone taking the accompanying role and playing second fiddle to Carters muscly

performance. This is typical Ron Carter, virtuosic, fluent and full of clichs. I love guitar/bass

duos and think fondly of the work of Joe Pass and Niels-Henning rsted Pedersen or Jim

Halls masterful album Jim Hall & Basses. This track never quite reached those levels

although it was fun to listen too. From a critical point of view Carters bass seemed to be out

of tune for much of this piece.

The final piece The Golden Striker sees the form return and a delightful way to finish the

  • 8/22/2019 HJGS Newsletter 24 Aug13

    11/16

    11

album with each of the members sharing the limelight equally and some sublime

    accompanying from Malone.

Over all a mixed album, some delightful moments with some real interplay between the

musicians, chamber jazz as it should be and other moments which had you been there would

have passed you by but on a recording dont really stand up to repeated playing.
