HJS Emission Technology is a successful medium-sized company

based in Central Germany and a leading manufacturer of vehicle

environment technologies. We develop, manufacture and market

innovative emission systems for petrol and diesel engine

applications.

With our many years of experience in exhaust-gas aftertreatment, we offer expert solutions and modular systems for reducing engine pollutant emissions.

These innovative environmental technologies can be used either asoriginal equipment or for retrofitting in passenger cars, commercialvehicles as well as a wide range of non-road mobile machinery andstationary applications.

HJS was founded in 1976 by Herrman Josef Schulte, a man with a de-finite vision and deep-rooted business values.

The company has now grown to over 500 employees, with its headquar-

ters in Menden, central Germany and a second site in Donzdorf.

In 2011, the company established its Indian subsidiary, HJS India Pvt. Ltd.,

with its own office and warehouse in Gurgaon, near New Delhi.

HJS SMF® system with passive regeneration technologyApplication: Trucks and busesReduction of:

SCRT® - simultaneous reduction of particulate matter and nitrogen oxidesParticulate matter or soot particles have been able to be filtered from dieselexhaust gases down to the limit of detection for some time now. HJS developedthe diesel particulate filter made of sintered metal (SMF® sintered metal filter)specifically for this purpose and was awarded the "Deutscher Umweltpreis"(German Environmental Award) for its efforts. Now, to reduce gaseous pollu-tants in combination with the diesel particulate filter, HJS has played a crucialrole in developing SCRT®, Selective Catalytic Reduction Technology. This mo-dular system is capable of removing almost all nitrogen oxide emissions fromdiesel exhaust gases.

Thanks to theirmodular construction, our products can be adapted to create a range of different versions to suit different applications. Whether it be the HJS City-Filter® for cars, vans and recreation vehicles, or the SMF® sintered metal filteras a 100% filter system for a variety of commercial vehicles (such as publictransport buses, trucks subject to toll charges, and public service and refusecollection vehicles) or for mobile machinery and stationary applications, wehave the right system to meet the specific needs of customers.

HJS Products ...Modular SMF®-AR system

Application examples for SMF®-AR systems.

Construction machinery and construction equipment, such as forklift trucks,mini hydraulic excavators, wheel loaders, industrial trucks and power generating sets.

Owing to greatly differing application profiles with exhaust-gas temperatures thatare frequently too low, mobile machinery and stationary applications are usuallyfitted with active systems, such as the SMF®-AR (Sintered Metal Filter with ther-moelectric self-regeneration) system developed by HJS. With this system, the par-ticulate filter can be regenerated at almost any engine operating point, irrespectiveof the exhaust-gas temperature. The heat necessary to burn off the particulatematter is generated by the SMF®-AR system itself.

Thanks to the compact and modular design of the SMF®-AR system, it can be putto use in many different applications. Pipes and brackets can be modified as required to match the different machines and vehicles. As a rule, SMF®-AR systemsreplace the original silencer.

The SMF®-AR system filters the exhaust gases until an optimum quantity of sootfor regeneration has been collected in the filter. The system makes use of the positive active properties of a fuel additive that on the one hand lowers the soot’signition temperature and on the other hand increases its burn-off speed.

The soot trapped in the filter can, therefore, be burned off in an automatic regeneration process when the exhaust gas has a temperature of around 400°C.If however, the necessary temperature is not reached – which is frequently thecase in the low-load range – the system’s active, thermoelectric regenerationfunction cuts in.

Installation materials ...An exhaust system is only as good as the weakest joint or fixture that holds ittogether. This is why the auto trade and repair shops that want to provide theircustomers with top quality products have been putting their trust in HJS installation materials for over 30 years. We’ve got everything you need for easyand reliable installation work: from assembly kits through special workshoppacks to individual packs and flexible pipe couplings.

The City-Filter® sets standards ...Our diesel particulate filters keep the air we breathe clean. They effectively hold back the soot particles and particulatematter that arise from diesel combustion and burn them off continuously. This is done and guaranteed by HJS’s veryown sintered metal filter technology, for which we received the German Environmental Award (Deutscher Umweltpreis)in 2003. Our filter solutions have been tested by the German technical inspectorate TÜV and are recommended byGermany’s largest automobile association, the ADAC. All systems have the national type approval required under EUregulations and have been specifically developed for retrofitting. They require no maintenance and last the full lifetimeof a vehicle. Independent tests show that the City-Filter® sets standards for retrofit filter systems.

Catalytic converters ...HJS is a leading supplier of catalytic converters. By using heavy-duty, high-efficiency coatings and high-quality materials, we produce and offer catalyticconverters of the very highest quality. Our extensive range of upgrade and retrofit catalytic converters for spark-ignition and diesel engines covers thebulk of vehicles on the road. HJS, however, also has suitable solutions for newerEuro 3 and Euro 4 vehicles as well as for older vehicles. Thanks to onboard diagnosis, the new generation of HJS replacement cat is EOBD-capable.

HJS Motorsport ...HJS has many years of experience and expertise in the field of exhaust-gas aftertreatment. For 20 years, we have been engaged in the development, production and marketing of HJS catalysts and exhaust systems for motorsport.We regard ourselves as a partner who tries to do everything to help customersbe successful.

Ultra-light catalytic converter reduces weight by up to 30%Significant weight reduction of over 50% compared to products of competitors

With the new ultra-light Emitec metal support it was possible to reduce theHJS FIA homologated catalyst’s overall weight by up to 30%. The thickness ofthe catalyst casing can be reduced from 1.5 to 0.5 mm by use of the new three-dimensional bionic structure. In connection with the previously used perforated foil (PE), there is a significant weight reduction of over 50% compared to products of competitors.

The reduction of the difference in thermal capacity between the steel foil matrixand the casing is another advantage of the product. As a result, durability doubles under the extremely high thermal shock loads commonly experiencedin motorsport. This new generation of ultra light (UL) catalyst was introducedin 2012 in the World Rally Championship with the HJS FIA homologated catalyst T1.6.1277-10 PE.

The Indian Government has introduced legislationsimilar to that enacted in Europe, initially startingwith Indian 2000 in 2000, followed by Bharat Stages (BS) II, III, IV and V, which are equivalent tothe Euro 1 to 5 emission standards.

As of April 2010, emission legislation in India hasmade it mandatory to install exhaust-gas aftertre-atment systems in motor vehicles in use in the National Capital Region (New Delhi & NCR) and 12megacities, with the same restrictions likely to beapplied nationwide as of 2014/2015. This will affectall 3 & 4 wheelers as well as truck and buses. Thelegislation lays down strict emissions standards,specifying the "permissible" limits of hydrocarbons(HC), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx)and particulate matter (PM, commonly called soot).

The strict particulate limit for Light (LCV)

and Heavy Commercial Vehicles (HCV) of

0.020 g/kWh, together with the NOx level

of 3.5 g/kWh for commercial vehicles, can

already be met today by two technologies.

HJS began exploring the Indian market

at the end of 2008 and went on to

gradually set up its Indian subsidiary

in Bangalore.

Today, just 2 years down the line, we are

happy to announce that we have opened

our own warehouse in Gurgaon,

which is close to both Delhi and some of

our customers and associates.

EGR + DOC + DPF® can be applied to existing

engines with low-cost mechanical fuel injection

or common rail systems.

SCR requires new engines with common rail

injection, which allows high peak in-cylinder

pressure to achieve the benefit of better fuel

consuption.

The figure shows exhaust gas aftertreatment with passive

filter regeneration. The engines fitted with EGR + DOC +

DPF® are capable of fulfilling BS IV emission regulations.

Business in India ...through HJS India Pvt. Ltd.

In India, HJS has a long-term strategy to bring products to India that have already been developedin Germany but modified to the Indian market interms of technology and cost, without compromi-sing on quality. Our successful experience in Europeduring the shift from Euro III to Euro IV helps us tomake it easier and more cost-effective when itcomes to products for India.

At present, product development is based in Menden, Germany, while testing is conducted cus-tomers' premises. But localization, together withjoint development to meet customer needs, is amajor step and we are prepared to set up specialdevelopment and application resources in India infuture if the market demands it.

Business with BS IV vehicles in India has yet to startin serious volumes and a date has still not been setfor when BS IV is to come into force nationwide.

A large percentage of our products are made tocomply with BS IV legislation, but the future potential of this segment looks very encouagingand many of our development and applicationsprojects are already in full swing. HJS is increasingits customer base in the on-road and non-road seg-ments, the latter being for the export markets inEurope and the US. We are already delivering series-produced products to two OEMs and haveprojects running with many other customers. Localproduction in India will start as soon as sales volumes will allow for investments.

Despite the challenges facing us, the good news isthat HJS has now sold around 3000 particulate fil-ters and filter systems (including a diesel oxidationcatalyst) over the past 18 months.

And we believe that is absolutely essentialthat we grow our footprint in India!
