Sporting a distinct set of racing
silks that represent the Italian
flag, Aegon (Sacred Falls) flashed
home to win the Hobartville
Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) last start, announcing
to the world that we will be seeing a bit
more of the green, white and red on the
major stage this autumn.
Aegon is raced by the Zames, an Italian fishing
family in New Zealand who, four generations ago,
migrated to Gisborne and established what is
now a highly successful fishing business called
East Rock that boasts a fleet of trawlers also
decked out in the colours of their home country.
It was not that long ago they were lured
into racehorse ownership and in only a short
space of time they have landed two high-class
horses.

Llanacord to Oaks after brave Lowland win
The Stephen Nickalls-trained Llanacord
(Contributer) landed the Little Avondale Stud
Lowland Stakes (Gr 2, 2100m) at Hastings
yesterday to provide the Mapperley Stud-based
stallion Contributer with a first stakes success.
A dominant eight-length winner in maiden
grade over 2040 metres at Whanganui last
month, she narrowly withstood the late
challenge of runner-up Charms Star (Per
Incanto) by a nose to win here in a brave
performance. Canuhandleajandal (Jimmy
Choux) finished a half-length further back in
third.

First, they owned ATC Derby (Gr 1,
2400m) winner Jon Snow (Iffraaj) and now Aegon, who is unbeaten in five
starts and is a leading contender for this Saturday’s $1 million Randwick
Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).
“It’s surreal and has been the whole way through. The burst of speed
he showed last time really blew us away, it’s pinch yourself sort of stuff,”
said part-owner Bart Zame.
“All I know is it’s been a hell of a fun time since we bought him until
now and the excitement is something very difficult to describe.”
Aegon was selected at the 2019 New Zealand Bloodstock National
Yearling Sale by his co-trainer Andrew Forsman, who also found Jon Snow
for them.
“I really loved him as a yearling. As a type he was very athletic and a
beautiful mover and had a fair bit of quality about him,” sad Forsman, who
trains in partnership with Murray Baker.
“I was determined to buy him. I didn't have any owners in mind and
bought him on spec and worried about the rest later on. The first people I
called were the Zame family.”
Bart Zame recalls the day he and his father received that phone call
from Forsman.
“It was almost by chance. Tony, my father, and I were at the sales and
chatting with Andrew and we weren’t really looking for another one,” he
said.
“Then my dad said, ‘Andrew if you find something you really, really
like, give us a bell’
and then he did 30 minutes later on our way back home to Tauranga.”
Forsman backed his own good judgement and stayed in the horse for
a small share and together they are now enjoying a pretty rapid ascent up
the Group 1 mountain.
“They don't all end up like this but it's gone perfectly so far and says
more about the horse’s raw ability than anything,” said Forsman.
“He has, in some ways,
been easy to train and has so
much ability. A lot of times in
the running he can get out of
trouble and good horses do that
despite things going wrong.
“Touch wood, that's the
good thing about him. He
doesn't put any undue pressure
on himself.”
On Saturday, Aegon will be
aiming to emulate the feats of
Dundeel (High Chaparral), another horse Forsman was closely involved
in the preparation of years ago when he worked under Murray Baker.
Dundeel, now a successful member of the Arrowfield Stud roster,
won the 2013 edition of the Randwick Guineas before going on to further
Group 1 success as a three-year-old in the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and
ATC Derby.
“He's got a little way to go until he gets to those heights. Hopefully
he has really improved and the signs were good last start that this guy is
maturing and improving. He’s up in that league, he's just got to prove it
now,” said Forsman.
Forsman and his band of fellow owners, that includes Bart Zame,
along with his 77-year-old father and 80-year-old uncle, can not be
there at Randwick on Saturday due to continued Covid-19-related travel
restrictions between New Zealand and Australia. So, instead, they will
gather to watch it on the TV at the Zame family home in Mt Maunganui.
They are predicting another hectic afternoon with a group of close to
20 adults and children coming together this time to cheer on Aegon.
“Everyone up the street knows when our horse is racing,” said Zame.
“I tell you what, these horses bring people together like family and
friends. It’s the racing game and without the racing game we wouldn't
have as much fun in life. Who knows, it might get someone else excited to
go and buy a horse sometime.”

AUSTRALIA
First for Lucky StreetStory Book (2 f ex Top Show by Stratum) made
an impressive winning debut at Pinjarra
Park yesterday to provide first season sire
Lucky Street (Oratorio) with his first winner.
The Trevor Andrews-trained filly arrived
at Pinjarra following two trial wins and she
continued that momentum with a one-
and-a-quarter-length defeat of He’s Gold
(Rogano) in the 1000-metre two-year-old
maiden. Diamond Blue (Awesome Rock) was
another half a length back in third. Story Book
is the second foal out of Stratum (Redoute’s
Choice) mare Top Show, who has two
winners from two runners. Story Book was a
$30,000 purchase by Andrews from the 2019
Perth Winter Mixed Sale out of the Western
Breeders Alliance draft. Lucky Street, winner
of the Karrakatta Plate (Gr 2, 1200m) in 2015,
stood at Darling View Thoroughbreds for
$4,400 last year.
Seven for CapitalistCapitalist (Written Tycoon) extended his
lead at the top of the leading first season
sires (winners) table yesterday when the
Adam Trinder-trained Miss Tuppence (2 f
Starlevie by Fasliyev) impressively landed
the 1120-metre two-year-old maiden at
Launceston, providing Newgate’s Capitalist
with his seventh individual winner. The Reg
Ryan-bred filly finished third in the Gold
Sovereign Stakes (Listed, 1200m) on debut
at the same track last month and built on
that performance to run out a comfortable
two-and-three-quarter-length winner over
Vetlanda (Lionhearted), with Power Magnum
(Magnus) close behind in third. The victory
took Capitalist two winners clear of his
nearest rival Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) (five)
in the freshman league table, with Frosted
(Tapit) and Sooboog (Snitzel) both on four.
Capitalist, who has two stakes winners so far
courtesy of Profiteer and Tycoon Humma,
stood at Newgate for a fee of $44,000 (inc.
GST) in 2020.
Lofty Star in consolation win at SandownCranbourne trainer Julius Sandhu and the
connections of Lofty Star (Zoustar) have
received some minor consolation at missing a
start in the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)
with victory in the Thoroughbred Club
Handicap (1600m) at Sandown yesterday. Lofty
Star, who was the sole emergency for last week's
Guineas but was unable to gain a start when
there were no scratchings, defeated Derive
(Redoute’s Choice) by a head, with Rousseau
(So You Think) a length behind the winner in
third. "I would have been happy to see what that
would have looked like, but we did not get the
opportunity so there is no point looking back,
we'll look forward," Sandu told Racing.com.
"He's one of those horses at this point in time
that he gives you the impression that he is not
doing a lot, but he's trying hard and learning
how to do it all. Today was another test for him.
He was challenged all the way and kept finding.
We'll go home, see how he pulls up from this
and then plan what to do next."
Predetermined hints at bright futureThe Leon and Troy Corstens-trained
Predetermined (Headwater) has got
connections dreaming of a big future after a
smart all-the-way win at Sandown yesterday.
Ridden by Jamie Kah, the two-year-old colt
notched his first win on his second start,
defeating Amegdul (Medaglia D'Oro) by
three-quarters of a length, with Montana
Flash (Star Turn) three lengths behind the
winner in third. "He's a nice horse going
forward,'' stable representative Dom Sutton
told Racing.com of Predetermined, who
finished sixth in the $500,000 Inglis Banner
(RL, 1000m) on debut in October. "He's
always been a horse that we've thought has a
nice amount of ability, he was just coming to
the end of his prep when he ran at Moonee
Valley on debut. He's gone away, developed
and furnished into a really nice colt now and
I think he's a horse that's definitely going to
be winning races."
Aegon on song for GuineasThe Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-
trained Aegon (Sacred Falls) ran out an
impressive winner of the Hobartville Stakes
(Gr 2, 1400m) last month and is likely to
start a short-priced favourite in Saturday’s
Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), a position
that Forsman finds slightly uncomfortable.
“It was nice coming in a touch of the
underdog in the Hobartville, it’s a little bit
of an uncomfortable position now but the
horse is well and that’s the main thing,’’
Forsman told Racing NSW. “I’d rather be $2
favourite than a $20 chance. All going well if
he can hold that form he’s going to be very
hard to beat. He had his first decent hit-out
since the Hobartville on Tuesday morning
and he went really well. Going into this
race I don’t think (two weeks) is too much
of an issue, it’s how he copes with this and
then the next month or so will be the test
for him.”

TOSEN STARDOM - FIRST YEARLINGS SELLING 2021| 6 |
O’Shea not scared of Kiwi raiderNew Zealand raider Aegon (Sacred Falls)
dominated on his Australian debut in the
Hobartville Stakes, but reopposing trainer John
O'Shea believes the locals won't be such easy
pickings in the Randwick Guineas on Saturday.
The O'Shea-trained Lion's Roar (Contributer)
finished fifth in the Hobartville and O’Shea is
expecting improvement from the local horses.
"He (Aegon) was a horse that, on the day, had
the right profile. He'd had the run at the mile,
he'd had a month between runs, then he got a
great (Hugh) Bowman ride," O'Shea said. "A lot
of the Sydney horses, and ours included, were
open to significant improvement going into that
run, albeit they have to turn around a significant
disadvantage." Lion's Roar, a $65,000 Karaka
yearling purchase, is a son of Contributer (High
Chaparral), who O'Shea trained to win back-to-
back Group 1s during the 2015 Sydney autumn
carnival and landed his first stakes winner
yesterday courtesy of Llanacord in the Lowland
Stakes (Gr 2, 2100m) at Hastings.
Samadoubt makes returnThe Bjorn Baker-trained Samadoubt (Not A Single
Doubt) is set to make his first start since October
2019 in the Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m)
at Randwick on Saturday. The seven-year-old
gelding, who landed the Winx Stakes (Gr 1,
1400m) in August 2019, needed plenty of time to
recover after suffering a tendon injury and Baker
is delighted to have him back. “That (retirement)
was definitely one of the options. He is sound at
the moment and we’re not getting carried away
but he is healthy and well and that’s all we can ask
for,’’ Baker told Racing NSW. “He needed a good
break. He’s been in pre-training and did plenty
of groundwork before he got to the stable, so he’s
done plenty of work and he’s probably as fit as we
can get him first-up. Importantly he still looks like
he has the zest for racing.”
Thompson expects strong Dreamforce showingJohn Thompson is full of confidence heading into
the Canterbury Stakes with Dreamforce (Fastnet
Rock) on Saturday. The eight-year-old will run
first-up after a three-race spring campaign, which
saw him land the Tramway Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m).
“It finally looks like we can get a dry track,”
Thompson told SEN Track. “The horse is going
super, I couldn’t be happier with him. It’s like he’s
got a new lease of life. I think he’s back at the top
of his game and I can’t see him do anything but
run well on Saturday.” Thompson was less bullish
about Mamaragan (Wandjina), who hasn’t won
competitively since the Skyline Stakes (Gr 2,
1200m) last February and goes in the Fireball
Stakes (Listed, 1100m) on Saturday. The three-
year-old colt has had two trials since finishing
seventh in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (Gr 1,
1200m) in October. “Keeping him fresh and
riding him positively over the shorter distances
I think is the way forward,” said Thompson.
“His first trial was super but his second trial
was a bit of a head scratcher. I thought he was
great on the bridle, but when he came off the
bit he probably should’ve done a little bit more.
Hughie (Bowman) said put the blinkers on, so
we are on Saturday. He looks a more mature
horse now, he looks fantastic. He’s ready to go
to the races and run very well.”
Hasan’s Sirius Newmarket contenderLast-start Standish Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m)
winner Sirius Suspect (Wanted) will line up in the
Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) on Saturday,
much to the delight of his trainer Saab Hasan. The
six-year-old convincingly landed the Standish
under Jamie Kah on New Year’s Day and the jockey
will remain aboard at Flemington. "This is the
Melbourne Cup for sprinters," Flemington-based
Hasan told Racing.com. "How many stables with
12 inexpensive horses can get a shot at a Group 1? I
had a discussion with the owners after the Standish
and said I wanted to save him for a race in March,
they were all so excited when I told them it was
the Newmarket and here we are.” Kah rode Sirius
Suspect in an 800-metre Flemington jumpout on
Friday morning when he cruised to victory over the
likes of Elite Street (Street Boss), Celebrity Queen
(Redoute’s Choice) and September Run (Exceed
And Excel). "Jamie's feedback was she thought she
was trialing Nature Strip," Hassan added. "She had a
few options on rides she could take but after trialing
him she said there was only one.”
Don’t write off DalasanLeon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas have said
Group 2 winner Dalasan ( Dalakhani) will
be ready to strike in the Newmarket Handicap
on Saturday, despite having bigger targets
ahead in Sydney. The Group 2-winning four-
year-old resumes after finishing seventh in the
Mackinnon Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) in November.
"From there we will head north to Sydney," Gluyas
told Racing.com. "The way we train, we have them
prepared to race 1200 metres first-up. I know he
does get over ground and we are searching for
that mile, and his good racing is a mile, 2000
metres, but we have prepared him as he is. His
1200-metre form as a juvenile is outstanding
really. We have brought him together as we know
how to do with him and hoping that we get a bit
of luck. We are probably not going to win, but
we are looking forward to a good showing."
Payne has Defibrillate in peak orderThe Patrick Payne-trained Defibrillate
(Shocking) will bid for his fifth-consecutive
Melbourne win when he lines up in the
Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Flemington on
Saturday. The six-year-old gelding’s winning
streak includes the Lord Stakes (Listed, 1700m)
at Caulfield on Boxing Day and the Mornington
Cup Prelude (Listed, 2000m) at the same
track last start. “I am confident he will run well,
but whether he is good enough at weight-for-
age (I don’t know),” Payne told RSN927 ahead
of Defibrillate’s first run in top-level company.
“When you have a look at the entries, he might
not be good enough, but there is nothing that
really frightens you. When you start going into
the form of the Australian Cup, it probably isn’t
as strong as what it normally is. Everyone is
more concentrating towards the All-Star Mile or
Sydney. We thought we would have a crack at it,
he is in excellent order.”

Parnham unfazed by step up in trip for PlatoonNeville Parnham believes Platoon (Playing God)
will cope fine with the 2000-metre Australian
Cup trip on Saturday. The five-year-old backs-
up after finishing third in the Shaftesbury
Avenue Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) on Saturday
but Parnham believes the extra distance will
prove to be a positive. “He’s looking for a little
bit further in distance, I think the 1400 is a
little bit short for him at this stage of his prep,”
Parnham told SEN Track. “We got away with it
first-up at 1200 metres, he was really good that
day in Perth, and then he ran well on Saturday.
After a slow early pace, they quickened up and
he didn’t quite have the same legs he had first-
up. He ran the final 400 metres the fastest of the
day, so he still had that speed at the end. It’s a
bit of a test for him at weight-for-age, but he ran
in the Ted Van Heemst Stakes over 2100 metres
and ran third to a couple of nice weight-for-ages
horses (Truly Great and Trap For Fools) so I’m
not concerned with him getting the distance.
He’s going really well and pulled up well from
his run the other day, so it’s full steam ahead.”
Profiteer still improvingThe Mick Price and Michael Kent jr-trained
Profiteer (Capitalist) is still improving according
to Price, after the two-year-old colt impressed
in a track gallop at Rosehill on Tuesday.
Profiteer will line up in the Todman Stakes (Gr
2, 1200m) at Randwick on Saturday in a bid to
cement his place as favourite for the Golden
Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) on March 20. “I think
he’s getting better,” Price told RSN yesterday.
“When he won at Flemington in his first start I
thought, ‘That’s a nice win, let’s set him for the
Millennium’. I thought he was fairly impressive
doing what he did in the Millennium and his
trial was very good – the horse is just getting on
the up and up and getting better all the time. He
will be a good, strong chance on Saturday.”
Mallory to press on to SlipperThe Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou-trained
Mallory (Not A Single Doubt) is set to press on to
the Golden Slipper on March 20 after finishing
third in the Sweet Embrace Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)
at Randwick on Saturday. The filly, who sits 15th
in the order of entry for the Slipper, landed the
Widden Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) on her previous
start and is reported to have pulled up well from
Saturday’s contest.
Bowman confirmed for MugatooHugh Bowman will ride Mugatoo
(Henrythenavigator) in the All-Star Mile
(1600m) on March 13. Bowman will take over
from Kerrin McEvoy, who partnered the Kirs
Lees-trained six-year-old in his last-start fifth
in the Apollo Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Randwick.
"Hugh rides The Valley as good as anyone,
especially in a big race, so we are happy to have
him on," Lees told Racing.com. "Mugatoo will
travel down to Melbourne on the weekend and
he is exactly where we need him to be in terms
of this stage of his preparation. Hugh has ridden
the horse before and rode him in both his trials
this preparation, one before his first-up run and
earlier in the week at Gosford.”
All-Star rider needed for FoxWhile Mugatoo’s All-Star Mile jockey has been
confirmed, the Paul Preusker-trained Lunar Fox
(Foxwedge) is in need of a rider for the Moonee
Valley contest. Michael Dee, who partnered the
colt to a shock victory in the Australian Guineas
(Gr 1, 1600m) last weekend, has decided
to ride Rich Hips (Written Tycoon) in the
Chandon Classic (Gr 1, 1500m) at Rosehill on
the same day. Dee rode the Trent Busuttin and
Natalie Young-trained mare to victory in the
Mannerism Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Caulfield
on her last start.
Mr Quickie progressing to ASMPhillip Stokes is confident Toorak Handicap
(Gr 1, 1600m) winner Mr Quickie (Shamus
Award) is in good shape ahead of the All-Star
Mile. The five-year-old gelding finished
third to Probabeel (Savabeel) and Arcadia
Queen (Pierro) first-up in the Futurity
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and Stokes believes
he is progressing nicely. “Really happy with
him, he’s in a great frame of mind,” Stokes
told SEN Track. “The horse is just getting
better with age and he’ll go there in good
order. He’s a definite chance. He’s only had
the one go at Moonee Valley but he just
seems to be better round those tracks like
Caulfied and Moonee Valley.”
Phar Lap next for ImpecuniousImpecunious (Sacred Falls) remains on track
for her autumn Group 1 targets in Sydney and
is set to line up in next Saturday’s Phar Lap
Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) at Rosehill. The three-
year-old filly has been forced to miss this
Saturday’s Kewney Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) after
needing more time to recover from a knock
suffered in the Angus Armanasco Stakes (Gr
2, 1400m) on her last start. "She hurt herself
last start on the line, so we gave her a few
days off and I think we'll have her ready for
the following week's Phar Lap Stakes in
Sydney," part-owner Ozzie Kheir told Racing.
com. "From there, if she runs well, we'll go
to the Vinery and then we could have a look
at the Oaks. She hasn't had much luck after
getting kicked at the barriers (and scratched
on January 2) and had no luck last start but
hopefully all the bad luck is behind her."
Cup competitor’s career in doubtThe Andreas Wohler-trained Ashrun
(Authorized), who won the Hotham
Handicap (Gr 3, 2500m) in the spring before
running tenth in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1,
3200m), sustained a tendon injury last month
which has the potential to be career-ending.
Ashrun, who is part-owned by Australian
Bloodstock, was being set for a run in the
Red Sea Turf Handicap (3000m) in Saudi
Arabia last month before suffering the injury.
"I don't think I've heard Andreas Wohler so
gutted, when he rang me I knew something
was wrong," Australian Bloodstock co-
director Jamie Lovett told Racing.com. "He
was having his last maintenance gallop before
going into quarantine in Saudi Arabia two
days later and he had an issue with a tendon.
We're going to bring him out over here and
take our time with him, nice and slowly. This
year's Melbourne spring carnival is out of the
question, he might never race again because

Marquand excited to renew rivalryTom Marquand, who landed the Ranvet
Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and Queen Elizabeth
Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) aboard Addeybb
(Pivotal) last year, is excited to renew his
rivalry with Verry Elleegant (Zed) in the
coming weeks, after the mare finished second
to Addeybb in both those contests. Verry
Elleegant has since gone on to notch four
Group 1 wins and the rematch between the
pair is shaping as one of the highlights of the
racing year. "Verry Elleegant is an exceptional
mare. She's won seven Group 1s now which
is pretty incredible," Marquand said. "Who
doesn't want two world-class athletes coming
together on the final day when it matters?"
Aysar could be set for Hong KongAysar (Deep Field) could follow stablemate
Crosshaven (Smart Missile) to Hong Kong in
the future, providing he passes an extensive
vet check. The Tom Dabernig and Ben Hayes-
trained three-year-old, who finished ninth
in the Australian Guineas at the weekend,
will remain in Australia for the spring before
potentially joining David Hayes in Hong
Kong. "Aysar has still got to pass an extensive
Hong Kong vet test and if he passes that, the
sale will go through, he'll be gelded, trained
as a sprinter and maybe head towards the
Rupert Clarke Stakes," David Hayes told
Racing.com. "I just think Aysar needs gelding
and Sheikh Hamdan (owner of Shadwell
Stud) is reducing his stock. We had a crack to
make him a stallion by winning the Australian
Guineas, which didn't pay off, and Sheikh
Hamdan was very happy to sell him.”
Webster: Join the Premier partyMark Webster, Inglis’ managing director,
has encouraged more local breeders to
strengthen the Inglis Melbourne Premier
Yearling Sale sale in years to come. The
2021 Premier Sale set a new record with
gross sales of more than $63 million, but
Webster believes there is still room for
improvement. "This is my 14th Premier
Sale, but I've long been preaching to the
Vic breeders to have some faith in their
own market," Webster told Racing.com.
"There have been plenty of breeders who
have taken advantage of that over that
period of time and it's something that's just
increasingly happening. The racing here is
so strong, the buying ranks are so strong
and, for those breeders to keep their better
stock here in Victoria, has been a wise move
for them this year because I think they've
been really well rewarded. There's still
plenty of other breeders that can join in on
that in future years, so I don't think we've
got the formula 100 per cent right yet. If we
can get more of the locals to support it and
also those interstate farms to send better
quality stock here, then this sale can just go
from strength to strength."
Applewaite seeks back-to-back Gypsy winsThe Leanne Applewaite-trained Gypsy
Biker (Mossman) will bid for back-to-
back wins at Rockhampton tomorrow after
downing Tycoon Flyer (Tycoon Ruler) at
the track last month. Applewaite, who
trains three horses alongside working as a
night fill manager at Woolworths, explained
her unique routine to Racing Queensland.
“I finish work around two each morning
and go straight to the stable,” she said.
“Trackwork and work around the stable is
all done by 4.30am then I get home to sleep
until 11 when I get ready to go back to work
at the store.” On Gypsy Biker’s chances, she
added: “He’s going OK but from a punter’s
point of view you either stick with him
or wipe him. He’s dropping back to 1400
metres after he won over 1600 metres last
time. I was a little concerned about him
getting 1600 metres but he ran on well.”
Brett Scott placed into comaTrainer Brett Scott was yesterday airlifted
to hospital and placed in a coma after an
incident at his Mornington property where
a horse struck him in the head. The former
jockey suffered a bleed to the head and a
fracture. Australian Trainers’ Association
CEO Andrew Nicholl confirmed Scott had
arrived safely at the Alfred Hospital with
medical staff saying they had stabilised
him and put him into an induced coma.
“All our thoughts are with Brett and his
family, it’s still very early in the situation
and we should have more information on
his condition in the coming hours,” said
Nicholl yesterday.
Dwyer to return to QueenslandTrainer Shaun Dwyer is returning to
Queensland after training in Bendigo for the
last 13 years. The Group 1-winning trainer
has applied for 30 boxes and will enter a
training partnership with son Shaun Dwyer
jr, who currently trains at Toowoomba. "I
had to make the decision, home is where
the heart is," Dwyer told Racing.com. "This
is our 13th year, I was only coming for ten
years originally, I had no intention on living
here, but Miss Leonidas arrived in the ninth
year, so I wasn't going to pull up stumps.
There’s no point being down here when the
four children are all up there and my son
Shaun jr is very keen to go into a training
partnership with me. We just have to sell or
rent our property out over the next two or
three months and we'll head up."
May Carnival hits crucial periodWarrnambool Racing Club is reaching
a crucial stage ahead of its May Racing
Carnival, according to boss Tom O’Connor,
with the club waiting to hear how many
people they will be able to cater for. The club
has applied for Tier 1 status with hopes of
about 6,000 people on course for the first two
days, beginning on May 4, and 12,000 for the
last day. "There are some time constraints in
being able to deliver that amount of people
in that time," O'Connor told Racing.com. "It's
starting to get a little bit time critical. We are
in that window where we are going to have
to make some firm decisions in the next ten
days. We rely very heavily on a great support
network of contractors and businesses who
pull the carnival together. We are in a crucial
period now where we need to firm things
right up."

Japanese horses unable to travel
Travel difficulties have prevented Japanese horses
from travelling to Australia to compete for autumn
riches. The Australian Turf Club (ATC) were
planning for a number of international arrivals,
but Covid-19-related travel complications have
complicated matters. “This year we got quite close
with a number of parties. In Japan, we had a small
but select group who were highly interested and it
(travel restrictions) just made that not possible,” said
James Ross from the ATC. “We had to inform our
Japanese connections over the weekend, in fairness
to their domestic and international programmes,
that we probably couldn’t wait any longer to
get certainty over travelling. I think we’ll see
heightened interest around races like the Golden
Eagle this year and next year’s Championships as
it becomes slightly easier to travel.”
Stud Book release list of leading stallions by coveringsData released by the Australian Stud Book has
revealed the stallions that covered the largest book
of mares in 2020. Leading the way is Coolmore’s
stallion So You Think (High Chaparral), who
covered 261 mares at a fee of $38,500, up from the
234 mares he covered in 2019 at the same price.
He is ahead of this season’s leading first season
sire on the track, Capitalist (Written Tycoon), who
covered 237 mares at $44,000, while Swettenham
Stud’s Toronado (High Chaparral) covered 210
mares at a fee of $27,500. Topping the list of first
season sires is Coolmore’s Everest winner Yes Yes Yes
(Rubick), who covered 205 mares at a fee of $38,500.
Coolmore stand three of the top five stallions, with
Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry) fifth on the list having
covered 202 mares. Newgate’s Deep Field (Northern
Meteor) was the only other sire to have reached the 200
mark, covering exactly that number of mares in 2020.

NEW ZEALAND
First for ContributerLlanacord (3 f ex L’Accord by Golan) scored a
first stakes victory from the first crop of her sire
Contributer (High Chaparral) when winning
the Lowland Stakes (Gr 2, 2100m) at Hastings
yesterday. Llanacord held off Charms Star (Per
Incanto) by a nose, with Canuhandleajandal
(Jimmy Choux) a half-length further back in
third. Contributer is resident at Mapperley Stud
where he stood for NZ$10,000 in 2020 and now
tops the second season sire list in New Zealand.
On Display ruled out of DerbyAuckland Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) and Avondale
Guineas (Gr 2, 2100m) placegetter On Display
(Showcasing), a late nomination for the New
Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m), was not accepted
for Sunday’s feature race by trainer Danny
Walker after the three-year-old sustained a foot
issue on Tuesday evening. “(Tuesday) night he
was a little bit off in a foot. We bathed it and
thought it might have been an errant nail but
this morning he was worse,” Walker said. “We
have x-rayed and he has basically got a bruised
foot. It is a deep-seated bruise, and it is going
to take three or four days bathing, so I decided
to pull the pin now. You have got to be 100 per
cent in a Derby.”
Montre Moi to capitalise in DerbyCo-trainer Johnno Benner believes Montre Moi
(Showcasing) can capitalise on what he perceives
to be a wide-open running of the New Zealand
Derby. “It’s pretty even and probably down on
quality on previous years the way it’s worked out
but we’re not complaining. It gives us a really
good chance in the race,” said Benner, who trains
in partnership with his partner, Holly Wynyard.
The son of Showcasing (Oasis Dream) finished
fourth in the Waikato Guineas (Gr 2, 2000m)
and third in the Karaka Million 3YO Classic (RL,
1600m) on his last two runs. “As we saw in the
Waikato Guineas, he was just a touch tardy and
Nabba (jockey, Michael McNab) didn’t want to
bustle him too much obviously looking towards
a Derby. He got too far back but he hit the line
well and heading to the Derby, it was a very good
run. We’re pretty confident he’ll see the 2400
metres out. He’s stoutly-bred on the dam side.
There’s staying blood all the way through there.
Everything he does at home, he’s always running
through the line. We’re always asking him to stop.
He’s very tough.”
Perfect Scenario an each-way Derby chanceChampion trainer Jamie Richards will be armed
with a strong Derby Day hand which features
Derby hopeful Perfect Scenario (Iffraaj). “I think
he is going well enough,” said Richards of Perfect
Scenario, who placed in the Waikato Guineas last
month. “He ran well at Te Rapa and three weeks
into the Derby is nice timing for him. We have
just spaced his races a little bit to try and look
after him. He probably lacks a little bit of physical
maturity. I was really pleased with how he worked
on Tuesday morning with Rocket Spade. He goes
into the race as good as we can have him. He is a
genuine each-way chance.”
Star filly Amarelinha in prep run for OaksRichards will also saddle Amarelinha
(Savabeel) in the Sunline Vase (Gr 3, 2100m),
a race which the trainer says will be crucial in
her preparation for the New Zealand Oaks (Gr
1, 2400m) on March 20. “It is quite important
for her that the races do go ahead because this
is her final run before the Oaks,” he said. “She
is in good shape, the three weeks turnaround
suits her, she has done some nice work, and she
looks fantastic.” Ameralinha has amassed three
wins from five starts, most recently collecting
the Fillies’ Classic (Gr 2, 2000m) at Te Rapa.
“She is a filly who is putting together a very
good record,” Richards added. “I am looking
forward to seeing how she goes. She obviously
loves Ellerslie and we would like the racing to
go ahead there for her.”

Richards in strong hand on Derby undercardRichards will have strong contenders across
the Derby Day card, including lightly-raced
mare Entriviere (Tavistock) in the King’s
Plate (Gr 3, 1200m). “We have continued to
space her runs a little bit and have kept her
nice and fresh,” Richards said. “I thought the
trial was very sharp. She probably trialled
the best of our four in that heat. She heads
into the race in good shape and with a nice
weight.” Entriviere will be joined by Festivity
(I Am Invincible), a winner of five of her
seven starts. “We took her back to Te Rapa,
dropped her in grade and she had to carry a
bit of weight (60.5 kilograms), but she relaxed
beautifully and did everything lovely,” said
Richards. “I think she has come on again from
that run. She has done some nice work and
seems to be in good shape. They are a couple
of nice mares to have in a race like that.”
Richards will have a three-pronged attack
in the Mufhasa Stakes (Listed, 1300m) with
Need I Say More (No Nay Never), Cornflower
Blue (Savabeel) and Holyhead (Pierro). “He is
in good shape and he trialled at Pukekohe last
week,” Richards said of Need I Say More. “He
doesn’t do much at the trials until raceday, he
is a laid-back customer. I thought he trialled
well enough.” On Cornflower Blue, he added:
“Cornflower Blue is a filly we hold in very
high regard,” he said. “She is Group 1-placed,
she has had a bit of time and she trialled well
the other day. Any rain around on Sunday will
be no harm for her at all.”

BY LLOYD JACKSON AND NZ RACING DESK
The Stephen Nickalls-trained
Llanacord (Contributer) landed
the Little Avondale Stud Lowland
Stakes (Gr 2, 2100m) at Hastings
yesterday to provide the Mapperley Stud-based
stallion Contributer with a first stakes success.
A dominant eight-length winner in
maiden grade over 2040 metres at Whanganui
last month, she narrowly withstood the late
challenge of runner-up Charms Star (Per
Incanto) by a nose to win here in a brave
performance. Canuhandleajandal (Jimmy
Choux) finished a half-length further back in
third.
“It feels amazing. It’s just an incredible
feeling,” Nickalls, best-known for training
jumpers, said after claiming his first flat stakes
success.
“We ran second in a Wellington
Steeplechase and that was a special day, but
this is pretty cool.
“I know we are in Covid times and it is
a very different world, but it didn’t dampen
enthusiasm at all.
“I have got to say a big thank you to Darryl
Bradley who galloped her on Monday for me
and said ‘this filly has just improved out of sight’.
“We were happy with her and she was fit
and healthy. If she was good enough, she was
in the right condition, and she certainly proved
she was good enough.”
Llanacord is now a leading chance in the
New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) in a market
headed by short-priced favourite Amarelinha
(Savabeel) and Nickalls believes the filly will
stay the 2400 metres despite her narrow victory.
“Leah (Hemi, jockey) came back in and
said ‘we’ve got an Oaks filly’,” he said.
“I’ve got no fears of her going the 2400 metres.
Right the way through she has given us the feel of
the further she goes, the better she will go.
“She hit the lead very early today, she has
done what she had to do and was brave right
to the line. We will go home and wrap her in
cotton wool and pray for the best.”
Nickalls owns the filly in conjunction with
his mother and stepfather, Dianne and Kevin
Hopson. The latter bought her for $15,000
at Book 2 of the New Zealand Bloodstock
National Yearling Sale in 2019 and sent her to
be prepared by Glynn Brick in Cambridge.
However, that came to a tragic end when
Brick died in a car crash near Cambridge in
March last year.
“Glynn had trained Kevin’s horses for ten
years, and the intention was always that he
would train this filly,” Nickalls said.
“When that happened my stepfather called
and asked if I could take her and we were only
too happy to.
“They were very tragic circumstances. To
be able to do something with her is something,
and if she can even run in the Oaks it will have
great sentimental value for all of us.
“We still have a lot to do with the family
and there is a memorial for Glynn in a couple
of weeks, so she will be running for him in the
Oaks, that’s for sure.”
Joy for breeder, HewittMapperley Stud had something to celebrate
late yesterday with Llanacord becoming the
first stakes winner for their second season sire
Contributer (High Chaparral).
Bred in Ireland, the stallion was a winner at
two and Royal Ascot stakes winner at four in the
UK, before claiming four Australian Group races,
including the Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and
Chipping Norton Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) in 2014.
The fourth living foal out of L’Accord,
Llanacord was bred in a partnership between
Mapperley Stud’s Simms Davison and Judy
Hewitt, with the latter unable to contain her
excitement at the win.
“Wasn’t that a good win and we thought
she needed rain,” Hewitt said yesterday to ANZ
Bloodstock News.
Hewitt missed out on purchasing L’Accord
(Golan) outright when underbidder on the
mare at the 2011 New Zealand Bloodstock
National Weanling, Broodmare and Mixed Sale,
as Davison secured her for NZ$26,000.
Yet an introduction to Davison after the sale led
her to becoming a part owner in the Golan mare.

“I came by the mare because of Michael
Moran of Windsor Park Stud,” she explained. “I
was underbidder on her and pulling my hair
out because I was underbider on several that
day.
“I spoke with Michael and he said ‘follow me’
and introduced me to Simms who was building
a broodmare band as the new owner of the
stud. So, we shook hands and became partners.
Hewitt gives credit to the advice of Simms,
who convinced her to turn to Contributer as the
perfect foil for the stamina-laden L’Accord, a
maiden winner of 2000 metres.
“I breed for sentimental reasons but I’ve
had some good advice from Simms who
convinced me that Contributer’s high cruising
speed would be a good match for L’Accord’s
staying blood,” said Hewitt.
“A friend and I visited Mapperley not long
after Complacent and Contributer arrived
there. When he brought Contributer out I
thought he was terrific. He stood over a lot of
ground.”
Hewitt has since returned to
Contributer with L’Accord, who has a two-
year-old filly by the stallion, while she
was put back in foal to Contributer last
year having foaled a Time Test (Dubawi)
colt.

The deficit remains confronting,
but Zac Purton breathed life into
flickering hopes of a successful
jockeys’ championship defence
with a stunning quintet at Happy Valley
yesterday evening to capitalise on Joao
Moreira’s suspension.
Posting his first five-timer for the 2020/21
season, Purton cut Moreira’s margin to 25 after
triumphing on Wood On Fire (Per Incanto),
Hurry Hurry Gain (Press Statement), Ever Force
(Toronado) and John Size-trained pair Wealthy
Delight (Lord Kanaloa) and Wind N Grass
(Lawman).
It is the eighth time Purton has registered
five wins at a Hong Kong meeting and the first
time he has accomplished the feat since May 6,
2020.
Such was Purton’s dominance, only four
other jockeys savoured success on Wednesday
night, including Karis Teetan, whose mount
Farshad (Kendargent) denied Purton, aboard
hot favourite Savaquin (Savabeel), a sixth win
on the final race of the nine-event program.
Chasing his fifth jockeys’ title, the
Australian boosted his tally to 70 – still well
adrift of Moreira (95), who is serving a two-
meeting suspension for careless riding, with 37
meetings left in the season.
“It was a nice night, I had a few opportunities
and a little bit of luck,” Purton said.
“Luck goes a long way. It’s not easy to do
(to ride five winners), just to ride one winner in
Hong Kong is hard to do.
“Hopefully things can start to roll along
a bit more. I’m not doing anything different –
right place, right time - that’s all.”
Ever Force, a lightly-built son of Toronado
(High Chaparral), registered a second
successive win with a gritty effort in the second
section of the Class 4 Matheson Handicap
(1200m), drawing praise from Purton.
“It was a good tough effort from him. He
was out on his feet at the 150 metres, he did
a good job to keep galloping along to get the
result,” he said.
“When he came into the straight, he was off
balance and not responding but I think his class
got him through.
“It’s not easy for three-year-olds to do that
and he’s very small and had to carry top-weight
as well - it was a good effort.”
Shum was similarly taken.
“He's a nice horse, only small but he’s got a big
heart. As a three-year-old, carrying top weight is
a big challenge. We’ll send him to Conghua now
to give him a short break and then hopefully he
can win in Class 3,” Shum said.
Lor is optimistic Hurry Hurry Gain can
advance through the grades after a hollow
success in the first section of the Class 4
Matheson Handicap (1200m).
Given a perfect ride by Purton, the Press
Statement (Hinchinbrook) gelding cruised to
the line under a hold by win by one and three-
quarter lengths from Sprint Forward (Lope de
Vega) and Fortune Hero (Starspangledbanner)
at just his second start in Hong Kong.
“He ran really well over 1000 metres at his
first start and I thought he would like it a little
further,” Lor said.
“I had trialled him at Happy Valley already,
so I knew there would be no problems but he
drew barrier nine - the jockey did a great job. I
asked Zac (Purton) to settle forward in the run
and he did a great job.
“I think he has good potential. The horse
has a good pedigree and I liked the trial video
before he came to Hong Kong. He’s not a big
horse, but he’s quite strong - I think he’s a nice
horse.”
Purton agreed.
“We had to do some work to get the spot
(behind the leaders) but what I liked is that he
relaxed mid-race and then when it was time to
go again in the straight, he picked up and put
them away,” Purton said.
“I think he’s a progressive horse and he’s
a bit unassuming. I think he’ll be looking after
himself a little bit – he did well.”
Alex Lai notched his second win of the
season and the first of the year when Manfred
Man-trained All Best Friends (Street Cry)
stormed to victory in the Class 5 Tin Lok
Handicap (1650m).
Having his 133rd mount for the 2020/21
season, Lai was understandably delighted
to partner his first winner since Moon Peaks
(Choisir) on December 26.

“I didn’t want to push too hard early
because the 1650 metres is too far for him,” Lai
said.
“He did his best - it was a good win,” he
added.
Dynamic Eagle (Guillotine) continued a
rich vein of form for Shum and Badel, posting
his third win in four starts by landing the Class
4 Percival Handicap (1800m). All three wins by
the son of Guillotine (Montjeu) have come this
season at the city circuit.
Caspar Fownes and Vincent Ho teamed
up with Nunchuks (O’Reilly) to claim the
Class 4 Morrison Hill Handicap (1650m)
before Teetan and Me Tsui produced Farshad
in the first section of the Class 3 Canal
Handicap (1650m).
Shum and Size shared the training honours
with a double. Size leads the trainers’ title 49-47
over Fownes.

You take a Group 1-winning mare,
out of a Blue Hen of a mother, and
put her with a sire renowned in two
hemispheres for leaving top-notch
offspring.
Et voilà – you make a Golden Slipper
contender, this one known as O’President.
Pretty straightforward, really. If breeding is
this easy, why isn’t everyone doing it?
Well, not so fast.
Because that was the exact problem – being
not so fast – with the first result of this Kia Ora-
stud mating, the first foal from O’Reilly mare
O’Marilyn – winner of the 2014 Manawatu Sires’
Produce Stakes – and the great Fastnet Rock.
This is one of those times you remember Dame
Nellie Melba’s infamous sister couldn’t sing, and
for O’President’s sake that’s a good thing.
That first colt went to the 2018 Inglis Easter
Yearling Sale five months before O’President
was born. Given his impressive breeding and
stature, he was in strong demand and, in fact,
fetched the second-highest price of the auction,
with George Moore Bloodstock knocking out
Coolmore with a bid of $1.8 million.
However, like many a nosebleed-inducing
buy before him, he’s gone on to prove very
costly indeed. Gelded for a career in Hong Kong
and named Circuit Five, he had four barrier
trials there in which he failed to give a hint of his
blue blood. The nerves among his owners will
have been understandably high, but still they
will have hoped for a different horse to turn up
on raceday. Finally, Circuit Five was saddled up
- at 70-1 - for his first start in December 2019.
He ran 12th, out of 12, beaten 17 lengths and,
following another poor trial two weeks later, the
pricey galloper is now a retired four-year-old.
Thankfully for Kia Ora and others, there’s
been better news.
A second try at the Fastnet Rock-O’Marilyn
match produced a filly who – eight months
before her big brother’s ignominious debut –
fetched $600,000 at the Easter sale when sold
to Japanese racing and breeding titan Katsumi
Yoshida.
She’s now the three-year-old Fifteen Aria
and shows promise, having won a Warwick
Farm maiden for Chris Waller on debut in
December.
But the mating now appears to have struck
gold with her little brother and stablemate
O’President, who sold for $520,000 in last year’s
online Inglis Easter sale (to the same Coolmore-
led syndicate that cheered $875,000 yearling
Home Affairs’ Silver Slipper win a week earlier).
O’President wasn’t supposed to be this
good. Not at this stage anyway. Expectations
were he’d grow into his skin more as a three-
year-old. But, after strolling in with a Canterbury
maiden on a heavy 8 track at his second start in
late January, at his next outing he soared into
Slipper calculations with an imperious length-
and-a-quarter win in the Skyline Stakes at
Randwick last Saturday.
He’s now providing plenty of potential to
justify Kia Ora’s faith and persistence with a
mating which did look very good on paper.
For starters, he’s by one of Coolmore’s all-
time greats in Fastnet Rock, the dual Group
1 winner who’s produced 40 more of them
worldwide, and who at 19 currently sits third on
the Australian two-year-old sires table and fifth
on the broodmare sires’ list.
O’Marilyn, bought privately by Kia Ora after
a track career which saw her win four from eight

starts. The start before her Manawatu Sires
triumph she’d finished a narrow second in her
first try at Group 1 level in the Diamond Stakes
at Ellerslie.
And her dam was Monroe Magic, who’s as
qualified for the coveted title of Blue Hen as
any broodmare. Though ordinary on the track
for trainer Bill Mitchell, retiring with just the
one win from 12 starts, at stud the daughter of
Zabeel’s record has been magnificent.
Her third named foal was Headturner, by
Anabaa, who claimed the 2006 AJC Derby for
John Hawkes and was third in the VRC version.
A few years later came full brother
Anacheeva, winner of the 2010 Caulfield
Guineas for Peter Moody, plus two other stakes
races.
O’Marilyn made it Group 1 winner number
three for Monroe Magic, while also in the mix
was Kroner, a Group 2 and dual Listed winner
in Sydney, all in 2009, for Bart Cummings.
“It really is an absolutely incredible family,”
Kia Ora’s bloodstock and breeding manager
Shane Wright tells It’s In The Blood. “To get a
Group 1 winner from the first dam is great, but
to get three of them is nearly unheard of.
“Monroe Magic was really was a Blue Hen
that way and now with O’Marilyn … it looks like
a very good one she’s produced in O’President.”
Matching Fastnet Rock with a daughter of
O’Reilly figures well down the list of that sire’s
best nicks, though the numbers themselves
aren’t bad. Of the eight horses thus-born, six
are winners, with O’President the first at stakes
level. But Kia Ora saw some sound reasoning.
“Putting Fastnet Rock over an O’Reilly
mare – it worked out pretty well on paper,” says
Wright. “We thought it’d be a good outcross for
the sire, and putting Fastnet Rock with those
slightly stouter Kiwi mares, on physicals it was
a great combination. O’Marilyn is a normal-
sized mare but she’s quite neat and with a lot
of quality, so the mating just made itself really.
“Fifteen Aria is taking a little bit of time but
Chris Waller does think quite highly of her.
“O’President was always a good sort. One of
these nice colts with a lot of quality about him.
He’s a very correct horse and his attitude and
his temperament were great – which is a lot of
the game when you’re trying to make good two-
year-olds.
“In fact he’s probably a little sharper than
we all expected. He’s already shown huge
ability at two and there are big hopes for him as
a juvenile, but Chris really thinks he’ll develop
into a top class three-year-old.”
As for that black sheep of the family in
Circuit Five? In a game that keeps everyone
on their toes, there are no ground-breaking
theories on why the same mating which appears
to have worked spectacularly in one attempt
failed so abjectly in another, with Wright opting
for a variation on the Nellie Melba theory.
“How fast were Cathy Freeman’s brothers?”
he says.
“I guess this is the million dollar question.
If we knew the answer this business would be
easy. Rome wasn’t built in a day but, when
you’re getting quality types, sooner or later you
hit the jackpot. Let’s hope O’President is that.”
Repeating the dose, O’Marilyn now has
what Wright calls another “very nice” Fastnet
Rock colt at foot. But, mixing things up, there’s
an I Am Invincible filly bound for this year’s
Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.
Further back in O’President’s pedigree,
Monroe Magic’s dam, My Marilyn, by
Bakharoff, was a stakes-placed winner of three
races. O’President has a chance to emulate one
ancestor in the Golden Slipper in O’Reilly’s
dam Courtza, winner of the 1986 Slipper (and
Blue Diamond), while Courtza’s dam Hunza is
the dam of five stakes winners, also including
dual Adelaide Cup victor Our Pompeii.
“O’Marilyn is a nice young mare from a
great family that’s moving in the right direction,
so we’re looking forward to Easter,” Wright says.
“Fastnet Rock is just a top class stallion and
every year he gets Group 1 horse after Group
1 horse. Hopefully we can provide him with
another one this year in O’President.”

Analysis: Llanacord held on desperately by a nose in a hardy staying
effort to claim her second win (maiden stakes) following an eight-length
victory at her previous start. She sat midfield, one out with a lap to run
then found the rail rounding into the back straight. Leah Hemi waited
patiently until the 600m, moved out and wider still rounding into the
straight to be four wide in fourth. Hemi asked and the filly responded,
challenged the pacemaker then led them past the 200m. Clinging to the
lead at the 50m she then dug deep to hold on by a nose. Charms Star
was third last at the 1000m, closer from the 600m but in heavy traffic
at the top of the straight. Pulled wide she found space then finished
strongly to almost get up. Canuhandleajandal was handy but pocketed
at the 600m, got a split at the top of the straight then kept on solidly for
a close third. Pacemaker Zee Falls was caught near the 200m but fought
well, losing third at the post. [LJ]
