    INTRODUCTORY NOTE

    1. Figures in this publication are given in metric units.

    2. (i) One lakh equals one hundred thousands; (1 lakh = 100,000)

    (ii) One crore equals one hundred lakhs or ten millions; (1 Crore = 1,00,00,000) and

    (iii) One paisa equals 1/100th of a rupee. (1 Paisa = Rs. 0.01 or 1 Re = 100 Paise)

    3. The data given in this publication pertain to Indian Government Railways only. The statistics pertaining toNon-Government Railways have been discontinued since 1978-79.

    4. The Freight Charges on the carriage of Railway Stores and fuel are reflected in the account of the spendingdepartments concerned instead of being credited to Earnings. These are taken in reduction of OperatingExpenses in the Financial Accounts of Government Railways with effect from 1st April, 1954. However, forthe purpose of working out the derivative statistical results, such as, Earnings and Expenses per Train Kilometre,Vehicle Kilometre, Wagon Kilometre, Tonne Kilometre etc., these Freight Charges are included as Earningsand the corresponding deduct entry in the Working Expenses is ignored.

    5. The Dividend to General Revenues has been calculated at 4% in 2015-16 on the Capital invested on theRailways, inclusive of the amount payable by Railways to the General Revenues for payment to States asgrant in lieu of Passenger Fare Tax. The subsidy towards Dividend Reliefs and other Concessions is obtainedfrom General Revenues on certain items of unremunerative capital investments. The items which qualify forsubsidy are (i) Capital cost of Strategic Lines, (ii) Ore Lines, (iii) Non-Strategic portion of Northeast FrontierRailway, (iv) Unremunerative Branch Lines, (v) New Lines constructed on or after 1.4.1955 on other thanfinancial consideration, (vi) gauge conversion work on strategic consideration, (vii) Works-in -progress, (viii)Ferries, (ix) Welfare buildings and (x) National investments. For the year 2015-16 dividend on capital investedin New Lines constructed on financial consideration has been calculated @ 4% i.e. lower of the averageborrowing rate and the rate of dividend, and on residential buildings dividend has been calculated at theconcessional rate of 3.5%.

    6. Metro Railway (27.60 km) from Noapara to Kavi Subhash (New Garia) is already under commerical operation.The following projects of extensions of Metro Railway are sanctioned and works are in progress.1. Noapara - Baranagar (1.93 kms)2. Noapara to NSCB Airport (6.40 kms)3. Noapara to Barasat via Bimanbandar (18 kms)4. Baranagar to Barrackpore and Dakshineshwar (14.50 kms)5. NSCB Airport to New Garia via Rajarhat (32.00 kms)6. Joka to BBD Bagh via Majerhat including Joka-Diamond Park MM (18.72 kms)7. East-West corridor from Howrah-Maidan to Salt Lake Sec.-V (14.67 kms)

    7. All wagon related figures are in terms of 8-wheelers w.e.f. 1-4-2008.

    8. Consequent upon declaration of Metro Railway, Kolkata as a Zonal Railway, Annual Statistical StatementNo. 45 regarding performance of Metro Railway has been discontinued and the data therein has beenshown in the relevant Statistical Statements.

    9. Omissions or errors, if any, detected may kindly be brought to the notice of the Executive Director,Statistics & Economics, Railway Board, New Delhi for rectification in the subsequent issue.
