Music students may well be the most difficult
category of students to find housing for. The
concern for noise forms a huge obstacle. With this
in mind, the housing corporation Portaal Utrecht
and SSH Utrecht have specially reserved a
number of buildings for students of HKU Utrechts
Conservatorium. The registration procedure is
described below.
SSH UtrechtThe housing corporation SSH Utrecht manages
two large houses in the centre of Utrecht in which
a total of 18 rooms and 14 studios are reserved for
students of HKU Utrechts Conservatorium.
The houses do not have dedicated practice spaces.
Theprice of a room depends on its size, and ranges
from 245,- to 375,- (incl. service charges
and heating). The studios are flats with a special
practice space in the basement. Studios cost
between 375,- and 445,- (incl. service
charges and heating). A rental allowance (huur-
toeslag) is possible for the houses and for the
rooms.
Registration with SSH UtrechtIn order to register with SSH for a room or studio
you need the following declaration(s)
Declaration by HKU University of the
Arts Utrecht to confirm that you are a student of
HKU Utrechts Conservatorium. (e.g. the proof of
registration that you receive each year from the
Registry Office (Bureau Inschrijvingen).
Students who receive Dutch
studiefinanciering need a declaration of that from
DUO.
Studio appartment
To register with SSH Utrecht for a studio
appartment, which you may occupy on your own
or share with others (Korte Jufferstraat, Lange
Jufferstraat, Keizerstraat) you need to submit above
declarations and
Registration number issued by WoningNet,
the housing service of the municipality of Utrecht (in
case of registration for a studio).
Please send to:
SSH Utrecht, P.O. Box 85042, 3508 AA, Utrecht.
Room
To register with SSH Utrecht for a room in a
building that you share with other students
(Nobeldwarsstraat and Brigittenstraat) you need to
upload your declaration(s) to your account at SSH.
Then you can respond to rooms that are available.
No indication can be given of anticipated waiting
times, since they vary greatly and depend on the
number of cancellations and registrations.

When you are notified that you can rent a room,
you need to have a valid SSH-registration number.
You can register online at the SSH website
(www.sshxl.nl). The registration costs are 27,50.
We recommend you register online directly after
your registration because this will also allow you
to build up waiting time for the other SSH rooms,
that are not reserved for students at HKU Utrechts
Conservatorium. For a studio you also need a valid
registration number from WoningNet. In that case,
you can register for both at the same time. The
combined registration costs are 37,50.
SSH Utrecht allocation procedureAllocation is carried out by SSH, meaning that
students who register for a studio can be placed as
soon as a residential unit becomes available and
they have reached the top of the list. Registered
students are not permitted to refuse an allocated
studio.
Students who are registered for a room are
contacted as soon as a room becomes available,
SSH will then contact the first ten students on the
waiting list. The resident students may choose from
a number of candidates. In other words, the room
is not automatically granted to the person who is at
the top of the list! Upon accepting a studio or room,
you are obliged to pay contract costs, which are set
at 45,- for a studio and 30,- for a room.
GraduatedOnce you have graduated you no longer qualify
for this accommodation. Your registration will be
terminated. This also applies if you terminate your
studies for another reason. You are expected to
inform SSH and the HKU Student Service Centre
(SSC) when you graduate or terminate your studies
so that we can remove your name from the waiting
list. If you are living in a room or a studio, and you
have graduated or terminated your studies, you are
not allowed to live there anymore. You get one year
to find new accommodation. For more information
you can contact SSH at 030 - 25 25 725.
Portaal UtrechtBesides houses and flats, Portaal Utrecht
manages a number of one-room apartments
at St. Ludgerusstraat, a side street of
Amsterdamsestraatweg.
These residential units are intended for students
who are seeking autonomous living space.
These residential units are reserved for students
of HKU Utrechts Conservatorium. There are no
practice spaces, but you can study in your room.
The rent for these units is about 380,- (including
service charges, excluding electricity, hot water and
heating) per month. The rent is subject to changes
and increases. Rent subsidy is possible.

Allocation St. LudgerusstraatPortaal Utrecht contacts the SSC as a soon as
a residential unit becomes available. The SSC
passes on the names of the persons at the top of
the list and checks if these are still registered as
students at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht.
Portaal Utrecht contacts the student and settles
all further matters (contract, takeover, etc.) directly
with him or her.
Preparatory course studentsStudents attending the preparatory course (voor-
opleiding) may register for the studios and rooms
with SSH and Portaal Utrecht, but are only eligible
for allocation of a room after being registered for
the regular course (reguliere opleiding). Instead
of proof of registration from the Registry Office,
they should submit a statement that they are a
student of the preparatory course of HKU Utrechts
Conservatorium. Such a statement can be obtained
from the SSC.
GraduatedA campus clause applies to the residential units
at the St. Ludgerusstraat from Portaal. This means
that you will have to leave the residential unit once
you have graduated or terminated your studies.
After graduation or termination of your studies
at HKU University of Arts the Utrecht you get six
months in order to find new accommodation.
Important!Keep us informed about changes in your address
and registration at HKU University of the Arts
Utrecht. If you have graduated, are not admitted to
the regular course or if you have found alternative
housing, please let us know as soon as possible.
If you are no longer registered as a student at HKU,
your name will be removed from the waiting list.
You can of course register for both the housing of
SSH and the rooms at St. Ludgerusstraat. Please
note that contract students cannot register for
housing or a room. Your status as a student is
verified (again) on acceptance of a residential unit.
