Park and Public Spaces for All

Key feature of the district is a great 19 hectare City Park that can be delivered to the

people of Hong Kong as early next year! Bringing the countryside to the middle of the

city, City Park will be the finest waterfront park in the world!

Right on the waterfront and planted with over 5000 trees, this lush urban forest with

undulating hills, will provide shade and shelter whether you are just relaxing, having a

picnic admiring the stunning harbour view or strolling through the sculpture garden.

An additional 4 hectares of green in the form of green rooms are located along the

harbour in front of the urban area, directly linking theses green spaces with the intimate

    piazzas of the city block.

    Nurturing Home Grown Talent

The Foster + Partners scheme will deliver twice as much cultural software as required by

    government.

As education is at the heart of a vibrant cultural district, this has been doubled to 32,000

sqm providing the much demanded low-cost, flexible rehearsal spaces and exhibition

venues (black boxes and white cubes) as well as schools for performing and visual arts,

    recording and post production facilities.

Foster +Partners is able to deliver these additional educational facilities by carefully

redesigning the theatres generous allocated spaces so that the same functional

requirements as stipulated by government could be achieved with less area and therefore

    less cost.

The result - a substantial 17,000 sqm plus of floor area was saved and reallocated to

additional educational facilities to nurture young people and grow WKCD into an

    international centre of creative excellence.

    Culture Integrated into the City

Culture for all for all, with something for everyone is what Foster + Partners envision for

WKCD. Culture, shopping, living, working and having fun are mixed together to generate

an energy that reflects the dynamic nature of the city, its spaces and communities.

Shopping and dining: a shaded avenue lined with restaurants, cafes, shops run the length

of the district in the heart of the urban area

Living and working: the urban area will have a variety of flexible spaces for people to

live, work and stay including the hotel in the habitable wall that wraps around the

western tunnel portal with its spectacular views over City Park and other Hong Kong

Island. Other hotels and apartments are located in the centre of the urban area.

Culture: main cultural venues are embedded within the urban area, while the black boxes

and white cubes, which will be the first to open, are located next to M+ at the corner of

Canton and Austin Roads. The Opera House is located where the city meets the park and

along the harbourfront avenue are the Concert and Chamber Music Halls, Grand Theatre

and Xique Centre. The Arena and Exhibition Centre are located together, close to public

transport and away from spaces sensitive to noise.

    Environmentally Sustainable

City Park will be green and sustainable and one of the most technologically advanced,

energy efficient and sustainable cultural districts in the world. As the first carbon neutral

cultural district in the world, the approach is holistic with every aspect of the district

considered from the arrangements of the buildings to waste and water recycling, energy

    consumption and renewable energy sources.

All traffic, parking and servicing is located below ground to preserve a green and

    pedestrian friendly environment above. 4

    A Connected and Accessible District

City Park is designed for people with pedestrian-friendly streets and a public transport

system within six minutes from anywhere in the district! An elevated rail and bio bus runs

the length of City Park while green bridges connect pedestrians to Austin and Kowloon

Stations and a plaza bridges Austin Road to the West Kowloon Terminus. For those

arriving by ferry, the ferry pier is located at the heart of the district.

    Responding to Hong Kong

What the people of Hong Kong wanted was a district that is innovative and inspiring,

world class, responsive, accessible, sustainable and unmissable as Asias must-see

cultural destination. City Park without a doubt, will transform Hong Kong as a leader in

the arts and one of the greatest places to live, work and play.

Foster + Partners WKCD CITY PARK

City Park belongs to the people of Hong Kong. What we have done is taken our

years of experience here, listened to what people want and created a district that

expresses the hopes and aspirations of the city. Spencer de Grey, Foster + Partners
