Healing touch is one of the oldest, most instinctual and powerful methods of caring available for human beings. Massage involves the stimulation of the superficial and deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, using various techniques to enhance function, aid in the healing process and promote relaxation and well-being. Massage involves working and acting on the body with pressure or moving on muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, skin, joints, other connective tissue, as well as vessels, or organs of the gastrointestinal system. Massage can be applied with the hands, fingers, elbows, knees, forearms and feet.

This nationally recognised industry-endorsed massage course has been designed to give you the required knowledge and skills to practice as a Remedial Massage Therapist.Diploma of Remedial Massage has been recognised as an eligible qualification to apply for Vet Student Loan (Government loan for studies which must be paid back once the income threshold has been reached) by the Australian Government.

Graduates with a Diploma of Remedial Massage qualification will be eligible to apply for membership of Professional Association such as ANTA. They can also gain credit towards a Bachelor of Health Science (Complementary Medicine) and Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic) if the graduates choose to pursue their University studies with Charles Sturt University (CSU).

• To gain knowledge, skills, and competency to qualify and practice as a practitioner of Remedial Massage Therapy.

• To provide an opportunity for an alternative pathway for tertiary studies.

The Diploma of Remedial Massage course can be completed within 12 months on a full-time basis. With part-time study, it may take up to two years. It is a requirement that students complete a minimum of 200 hours of supervised clinical training. Clinical sessions are conducted and supervised by qualified practitioners at the student clinic on campus. Practical training willbe o�ered at our Cockburn Central Campus. Massage Clinic and classes will be held during weekends and/or evenings, depending on student demands to cater for working students. All the theoretical units will be delivered online in real-time where students can interact with their teachers and fellow students. The entire class will be recorded for the students to access 24/7 during the term in which they are enrolled. Subjects delivered by AIHFEare mapped against nationally recognised units of competency from the Health Training Package, and students may be required to complete more than one AIHFE subject or complete a unit of competency. Most of the unit assessments will be concluded in the workplace/clinic.

Duration:One year full-time or two years part-time

Mode of delivery:Blended delivery, both virtual and on Campus/clinic/workplace.

Number of terms per year: 4, each lasting 10 weeks.

Entry requirements:Completion of year 12 or equivalent or completion of a Certificate IV or higher qualification.

Mature age students may apply without having completed year 12 but must possess the necessary literacy, numeracy and language skills.

Credit transfer: Students may apply for credit for the identical units completed in their previous training or qualification.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL):Students may apply for RPL based on their vocational experience or, educational history. (Su�icient evidence must be provided)

Payment option:Limited Vet Students Loan (VSL) for eligible students, Interest-free instalment payment, up-front payment per term - not exceeding $1500.00 per each payment.

Clinical training: By attending AIHM clinics which may be held during evening and or Weekends.

BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE BMS 101

This subject provides the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies for the students to meet the requirements of the nationally recognised unit HLTAAP 003 Analyse and respond to client’s health information.

The subject contents include structuralorganisation of body, Cells and tissues, Anatomy and Physiology of the integumentary system, Musculoskeletal system, digestive system, cardiovascular system, lymphatic and immune systems. Concepts of Chemistry, microbiology, pharmacology and pathology relevant to the body systems will also be covered. Common disorders of the systems, symptoms and signs and di�erential diagnosis will also be covered.

PREREQUISITE: NIL

This subject provides the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies for the students to meet the requirements of the nationally recognised unit HLTAAP 003 – Analyse and respond to client’s health information.

The subject contents include Anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and pathology related to respiratory, endocrine, nervous, reproductive and urinary systems. Common disorders of these systems, symptoms, signs and di�erential diagnosis will also be covered. Common environmental emergencies, trauma, overdose, poisoning, and surgical insult and their impact on our health will also be discussed.

The subject contents include the development of a business plan incorporating goals and objectives, government legislative requirements relating to business operation, WHS responsibilities and procedures of risk management, feasibility studies; strategic, operational, financial and marketing planning.

This unit provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies for the students to meet the requirements of the nationally recognised unit HLTAID003 - Provide First Aid. Students must complete the theoretical components and relevant knowledge based assessment before attending the practical component.

The areas covered include cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, defibrillation, management of an unconscious casualty, internal and external bleeding, fractures, bandaging, burns, poisons, bites, stings, eye and ear injuries.

COMMUNICATION, LAW AND ETHICS CLE 401

This subject provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies for the studentsto meet the requirements of the nationally recognised units CHCCOM006 - Establish and manage client relationships, CHCLEG003 - Manage legal and ethical compliance and CHCDIV001 - Work with diverse people.

The subject contents include legal and ethical considerations for developing and maintaining client relationships and how these are applied. Also, legal responsibilities and liabilities, legal and ethical frameworks, sources of information and advice on compliance, cultural awareness,safety, diversity and cultural competence. The modes and techniques for e�ective communication, motivational interviewing, barriers, and influences on communication and ways to respond, and also methods for dealing with di�icult communication situations.

CLINICAL PRACTICE AND PROCEDURES CPP 401

This subject provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies for the students to meet the requirements of the nationally recognised units. CHCPRP003 - Reflect on and improve your professional practice, HLTWHS004 - Manage work health and safety, CHCPRP 005 - Engage with health professionals, and the health system and HLTINF 004 - Manage the prevention and control of infection.

The subject covers clinical policies and procedures, instrument handling, Australian Health system and engaging with other health professionals, reflect on and improve your professional practice, consultation and practice protocol, workplace health and safety issues and Infection control and procedures.

CLM 201 MASSAGE CLINIC ONE,CLM 302 MASSAGE CLINIC TWO AND CLM 403 MASSAGE CLINIC THREE.

These units provide the students with the opportunity to apply what they have learned and demonstrate their skills in the workplace which is an essential part of the course. During the clinical training, students will deal with members of the general public who attend the clinic to receive massage therapy. Students are required to maintain a clinic log book which should be signed daily by their supervisor and must wear the clinic uniform. Detailed history, clinical findings, advice and therapy provided must be clearly recorded in each client’s file for future discussion and as evidence of student assessment. Students are required to complete 200 hours of massage practice under supervision as a requirement of this qualification. The clinic will be conducted during weekends and/or a�ernoons and evenings (dependent on popularity) giving students multiple options to gain their skills.

Prerequisites: Massage Clinic One CLM201: All the units in term one and two.

FOUNDATION OF MASSAGE FMG101

This subject provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies for the learners to meet the requirements of the nationally recognised unit. HLTMSG001 - Develop massage Practice.The unit provides students with the knowledge of the historical development of massage, di�erent types of massage treatments and their key features and purpose. They include the di�erence between relaxation and remedial massage, key features of complementary therapies used in conjunction with massage, including aromatherapy, reflexology. Also, key features of allied health services and their relationship to massage, including physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic, exercise physiology, dietetics, naturopathy, place of massage practice in the broader health care system, professional massage networks, and industry bodies. And also models of professional massage practice and their employment opportunities. In addition to this, components of sustainable practice and legal, ethical consideration when you practice as a massage therapist how these are applied in individual practice are also discussed.

This subject provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies for the learners to meet the requirements of the nationally recognised unit HLTHPS010 - Interpret and use information about diet nutrition and diet. The contents of the subject include legal and ethical requirements about the provision of nutritional and diet information for clients.Roles, responsibilities, and limitations of di�erent people, conflicts of interest and ethical considerations. The source of information about nutrition and diet and ways to assess their credibility. An evidence-based approach to nutrition and diet, review of the digestive system,

This subject provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies for students to meet the requirements of the nationally recognised units HLTMSG002 - Assess client massage needs and HLTMSG004 - Provide massage treatment. The contents of the subject include legal and ethical considerations (national and state/territory) for client assessment,referral options for massage practitioners, factors and barriers that may impact on massage assessment. Also, factors that a�ect individual health status, client information required before physical assessment, considerations for performing physical massage assessments, physical assessment techniques, how and when they are used. Further, contraindications to treatment and possible indications for referral. Anatomy and physiology of major muscles, bones and joints, massage techniques and how to apply them. Endangerment sites and the limitations of touching these areas, possible reactions during and a�er treatment and how to respond. Advice and resources that can be provided to clients for their use outside the clinical environment and documentation requirements for recording treatment details.

This subject provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies for the learners to meet the requirements of the nationally recognised units HLTMSG005- Provide remedial massage treatments and HLTMSG008 - Monitor and evaluate remedial massage treatments. The subject contents include remedial massage techniques and their application, remedial massage techniques to address conditions such as sciatica, arthritis, headache, plantar fasciitis, shoulder impingement, TMJ dysfunction, repetitive strain injuries, medial and lateral epicondylitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and postural imbalances. Endangerment sites, potential reactions during and a�er treatment and responsive methods. Further, types of criteria by which remedial massage treatments are evaluated, expectations of treatment for di�erent conditions and client groups and factors that impact on those expectations, methods of monitoring treatment progress, barriers to therapeutic progress and ways to respond within a massage framework. The contents of the subject include roles and responsibilities of di�erent people associated with the health management of the athlete, relevant principles of human movement and sports biomechanics, pre-event and post-event massage techniques and their application, a full range of movement of the joints and muscles without aggressive proprioceptive neuromuscular facilita-tion. (PNF) type of stretching, features of acute, chronic and overuse musculoskeletal injuries in sport, including referral potential, the rate of recovery and how massage can assist. Types of cryotherapy or thermotherapy used for recovery from injury and techniques used to apply them. Indications, contraindications, and considerations for the use of cryotherapy and thermotherapy. Uses and Indications for taping and splinting that are within the scope of massage practice.
