HIGH SCHOOL & ADULT CLASSES To register: call Sonia Culbreath 828-327-8576 ext. 208 BEYOND THE BASICS ADVANCED WATERCOLOR TECHNIQUE With Judy Rider Five Wednesdays: Oct. 10, 17, 24, 31 & Nov. 7, 1 – 4 PM $25 Members/class, $30 Non-Members/class OR $90 Members/all classes, $105 Non-Members/all classes Must register by the Thursday before class. This class is designed for students who have taken watercolor classes before, and have some working knowledge of color mixing and applying paint to paper. Students will work on improving technique; adding elements of composition and design; creating value studies; and planning compositions. Various subject matter will be explored including landscape, floral and still-life. Short demos at the beginning of the class will leave time for independent work, including one-on-one interaction with the instructor. A materials list will be sent upon registration. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 10 AM 1 PM Saturday, Oct. 20, 10 AM 1 PM $45/class Members, $55/class Non- Members (includes materials) Must register by Monday, October 15 Paper quilling, also known as paper filigree, is an ancient and beautiful art that is created by curling, rolling and shaping narrow strips of paper. The strips are first rolled around a needle-like tool and are then glued, shaped, turned on edge, and arranged on a background. Students will be taught the basics of how to quill, while creating a floral greeting card. All materials needed for use in the class will be provided. For home use, a quilling kit may be purchased for $10 that includes a quilling tool, multi-colored pack of quilling paper, a workboard and a snowflake quilling kit and greeting card. Students only need to bring a ruler and tweezers. PHOTO-REALISM With Lance Turner Four Thursdays: October 18, 25, November 1 & 8, 6 8 PM $60 Members, $75 Non-Members Must register by Wednesday, October 16 Photo-realism is the genre of painting based on using cameras and photographs to gather visual information, then creating a painting that appears ‘photographic.’ Turner, a graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design, with a body of widely reviewed works, is also serving as HMA’s curatorial intern this semester. Step into Lance’s class to learn about the history, nuance and concepts behind Photo-realism, and create your own photo-realistic art. Check out his website at www.lanceturnerpainting.com. A materials list will be sent. TRADITIONAL RUG HOOKING With Ronni Smith Two Saturdays: November 10 & 17, 10 AM Noon $40 Members, $50 Non-Members (includes materials) Must register by Wednesday, November 7 Learn the craft of traditional rug hooking from HMA’s very own Ronni Smith. You will hook a 10” x 5” folk art angel by using recycled woolen clothing on a burlap backing. With Ronni’s artistic guidance, you will create a lovely family heirloom just in time for the holidays! This is an ongoing format in six week blocks of time. Participants can draw, paint, collage or use the printing press. The model holds the same pose for three hours with a break every 20 minutes. All ability levels are welcome. There is no instruction. This class is for adults, but high school students with written parental permission may participate. This 2-hour program includes presentation on Advent Wreath history, tradition and symbolism. Becky is a lifetime member of the Herb Society of America, and Master Gardener Volunteer graduate. A longtime herb and garden writer, she also contributed to the Herb Society of America’s Essential Guide to Growing and Cooking with Herbs, a special project benefiting the National Herb Garden located in Washington, DC. Make a pumpkin puppet, complete your spooky scavenger hunt and receive a sweet treat! Guest appearances by HMA’s Artie the Dog and Mr. T-Rex. Wear your Halloween costume!
