WANtED: hAND PUPPEtS!

Our puppet stage in “Little Hands,Big Hands” is in need of new puppets. We will take new or gently used puppets,or small donations so we can purchase some.

Also, the Education Department would like a digital camera to keep in the classrooms for those times when masterpieces are being created. We don’t always have time to run upstairs and find a camera before the moment has passed. If you have an old camera you are not using, we would love to put it to good use!

HMA student intern, Tyler Lariscy, a senior at Hickory High School, recently painted an “Artie in Space” mural in the 1st Floor Artie Activity Station, located near the back stairwell. Have a seat on the couch, then look up to enjoy the mural!

This upcoming exhibition provides a logical transition for HMA as we continue to incorporate more exhibition themes involving children, families, educational curriculum, partnerships, and community. The proposal to present this unique exhibit developed by Lied Discovery Children’s Museum of Las Vegas came from the Hickory International Council. While using the Internet to prepare for this February’s Model UN in Hickory, Dr. Marion Love, Council VP, stumbled across an announcement

for an inspiring, hands-on journey into the extraordinary lives of children forced from their homes to seek safety in new lands. The co-sponsorship of this vivid interactive experience – for both youth and adult audiences – has quickly resulted in the generation of funding, promotions, teacher training materials, volunteer recruitment, and complementary public programming.

I hope you will accept my invitation to take full advantage of this exhibition which comes to Hickory through the generous support of national sponsors Pamela & Pierre Omidyar (eBay founder), and local sponsors Howard & Pat Anderson and the Beaver Family Foundation. See the enclosed flyer for a listing of related programs.

Please put the exhibit opening reception (January 29) on your calendar and see for yourself how TORN FROM HOME – which is touring only 12 cities in North America over a 4-year period – will stimulate powerful conversations and insights as we grow more knowledgeable about our local responses to refugee resettlement and immigration in our region.
