Wendell Belew Collection includes materials documenting Belew’s career with the Home Mission Board. (54 document boxes) Collection #: AR 631-10 Biographical Sketch Renowned missiologist, pastor, professor, and retired Navy officer Dr. M. Wendell Belew served the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention for thirty-seven years. Belew was born May 4, 1922 in Keefer, Kentucky. He earned an A.B. degree from Georgetown College (Kentucky) in 1943, briefly taught high school chemistry then served as a line officer in the United States Navy from 1943 – 1946. After service in the Navy, Belew entered the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, graduating with a Master of theology degree in 1949. He served as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Mount Vernon, Kentucky, from 1947 to 1951. From 1951 to 1956, he served as director of Mountain Missions for the Kentucky Baptist Convention. Belew joined the staff of the Home Mission Board in 1956. He held several posts at the Board including director, Church-centered Missions (1956 – 1956); secretary, Department of Associational Missions (1959 – 1964); secretary, Associational Administration Services / Church Extension Division (1964 – 1966); secretary, Department of Pioneer Missions (1967 – 1970); director, Missions Ministries Division (1971 – 1986); and Associate Vice President for Missions

Strategy Interpretation (1986 – 1988). He retired from the Home Mission Board in 1988. Georgetown College awarded Belew an honorary doctorate of divinity degree in 1966. He served as the W. W. Brookes Visiting Professor of Missions at Southern Seminary from 1969 – 1970, and as an adjunct professor at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (1972) and Southwestern Seminary (1976). He presented church growth lectures at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, and Bethel College and Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota (1977), and served as a guest lecturer and research fellow at Yale Divinity School, New Haven, Connecticut (1981). In addition to his service at the Home Mission Board, Belew served in various leadership capacities with other missions-oriented organizations. He was president of the American Society of Missiology (1979 – 1980) and a board member of the American Bible Society from 1979 to 1988. In 1961, Belew encouraged the ABS to produce an easy-to-understand translation of the Bible. In 1974, the Society presented him with the forty-four millionth copy of Good News for Modern Man in appreciation for that request. Belew was a frequent speaker at many Southern Baptist Convention related events where he often related first hand stories of rural missions work. He authored several books including Song of Hawaii (1969), Churches and How They Grow (1971), Missions in the Mosaic (1974), Tomorrow’s Land: A Story of Baptists in Kentucky’s Mountain (1976), The Leaven and the Salt (1977), The Purpose and Plan of the Baptist Brotherhood (1978), The Dark’s A-Creepin’ (1979), Bold Praying (1982), Ken Prickett Man of Joy (1985), and A Missions People: The Southern Baptist Pilgrimage (1988). Belew married the former Edna Record and was the father of four children. He died March 8, 2000. Scope and Content Note The M. Wendell Belew Collection (27 linear ft.) includes materials documenting Belew’s career with the Home Mission Board. Materials in the collection range from 1927 to 1990 with the bulk of the items covering the period 1956 to 1988. The collection includes files related to the Home Mission Board departments of associational missions, church extension, church growth, evangelism, interfaith witness, language missions, pioneer missions, special missions ministries, and work with National Baptists. The collection provides information about Home Mission Board departmental conferences, minutes, reports, task force findings, goals and objectives, surveys, and promotional literature. The collection also includes Belew’s articles, correspondence, manuscripts by Belew and others, pamphlets, presentations, sermons, and research materials. In addition to departmental mission files, the Belew papers also contain information on the American Bible Society, American Association of Missiology, Baptist Jubilee Advance, Bold Mission Thrust, Brotherhood Commission, Cooperative Program, Interagency Council, mission work in Hawaii, race relations, the 30,000 Movement, and Woman’s Missionary Union. Belew corresponded with a number of Southern Baptist Convention denominational leaders
