BIOLOGY

Biology is the study of LIFE! In Biology the design and organization of living things and in particular humans is studied as well as how these organisms interact with their environment. This knowledge provides the foundation for understanding the opportunities for promoting the well-being of humans and other living organisms in the environment. It generates an awareness of the importance of our biodiversity and the unique role of humans in conserving, protecting and improving the quality of the biological environment for future generations.

The CSEC Biology Syllabus is redesigned with a greater emphasis on the application of scientific concepts and principles. An interested student must therefore have the basic understanding of science principles Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics that was taught in Form 1-3. Studying Biology at the CSEC level will provide a sound foundation to pursue the study of Life Sciences and related professions at the postsecondary level.

Where can Biology take you? Here are some possible careers:1. Science and Research – research scientists, Biologist, Forensic Scientist2. Medicine and Healthcare – Doctor, Nurse, Pharmacist, Veterinarian 3. Agriculture – Farmer, Ecologists, Environmentalist4. Sport and Fitness – Athlete, Nutritionists, Personal Trainer5. Engineering – Biochemical engineer, Biotechnologist6. Police and Emergencies – Paramedic, CSI , Police Officer

Structure of CSEC Biology:

The syllabus is arranged in three sections namely:

Section A Living Organisms in the EnvironmentSection B Life Processes and DiseaseSection C Continuity and Variation

Class Size: It is recommended that practical classes accommodate a maximum of twenty-five students.Time Table Allocation: It is recommended that a minimum of five 40-minute periods per week, including one double period, be allocated to the subject over a two-year period.

CLOTHING AND TEXTILES

Clothing and Textiles is a Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) subject which consists of both theory and practical. It is primarily design to enable students to make intelligent decisions about the choice and importance of clothing, to develop attitudes, skills and knowledge in the design manufacture and marketing of clothes and textile products.

Clothing and textiles provides opportunities to develop capabilities that could be used as sources of income through self employment and other avenues in the job market.

These basic life skills can be used to optimise expenditure by performing tasks and producing items which would otherwise be purchased.

Recommended Classes: Six (6) 40 – minute periods per week

One session to run for four (4) consecutive periods in order to facilitate practical activities. The remaining two (2) periods to be used for the theoretical aspects of the syllabus.

Format of Examination at General Proficiency ONLY includes:

Paper 01 Multiple Choice 60 marks

Paper 02 Structured essay paper in two (2) parts

Part A – Three (3) structured compulsory questions

Part B - Four questions drawn from three sections of the syllabus, of

which the student must answer two.

School Based The School Based Assessment components comprises THREE

Assessments assignments testing practical skills

Assignment One set by the teacher and marked by the teacher

Assignment Two set by the teacher and jointly assessed by the teacher

and an External Examiner.

Assignment Three set by the teacher and marked by the teacher.

It is recommended that assignment one should be done in the third term of year one of the course.

ELECTRONIC DOCUMENT PREPARATION MANAGEMENT (EDPM)

Students seeking opportunities in the world of work or pursuing further studies must develop

competence in the use of computers. The Electronic Document Preparation Management

syllabus is designed to equip students with knowledge and computer related skills required to

perform computer related tasks. Students are trained to meet deadlines, prepare documents, and

adopt ethical standards in producing electronic documents.

RECOMMENDED CLASSES: Five (5) 40-minute periods per week

INTEGRATED SCIENCE

An understanding of science is central for young citizens’ preparedness for life in modern society. The study of science provides the knowledge and skills which are intended to improve the quality of living. Integrated Science brings together the everyday context in which science operates. It encompasses biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, environmental science and technology.

It should be noted that Integrated Science can be used to further studies in the nursing, teaching, social services, emergency services and environmental career paths. In addition most career opportunities require Mathematics, English and a science subject. By attaining a passing grade in Integrated Science it further opens your career options.

THEATRE ARTS

Parents and students should note:

1. That our school does not offer a dance programme as such the dance option does not apply to our school.

2. There is now an A'Level programme offered in secondary schools for students who would like to pursue degrees in Theatre, Carnival Studies, and or Cultural Studies at the University of the West Indies.

The Theatre Arts Programme for CSEC

Theatre Arts employs a variety of arts, such as, dance, choreography, acting, playwriting and directing. It also uses the crafts of the carpenter, painter, artist and designer, and the skills of organisation, co-ordination, and stage management of activities. Consequently, Theatre Arts also contributes invaluably to the creative economy of the region.

Dance and Drama are two major components of Theatre Arts. The third component, Stage Crafts, links Dance and Drama by providing the crafts and skills required for producing theatre. Thus, the Theatre Arts Syllabus is organised to be taught and experienced under three main principles: Appreciating and Analysing, Creating and Performing through Dance, Drama and Stage Crafts. As such, Theatre Arts should not be conceived of as three distinct disciplines. Rather, the Theatre Arts Syllabus has been designed to provide experiences that enable students to appreciate create and communicate theatrical events with their minds as well as their senses, emotions and their bodies, thereby fostering self- confidence, self-discipline and self-motivation.

The Theatre Arts examination consists of three components. Paper 01 a short-answer paper, consist of six (6) compulsory questions. Paper 02, the practical paper, is examined externally by the Theatre Arts teacher and a specialist in the field.

Paper 03, the School-Based Assessment, consist of two projects - a critique and research paper.
