HOBBIES AND CRAFTS Templates/Instructions

o You will need a pinch clothespin, scissors,markers or crayons and glue/glue stick.

o Trace, print or copy the dinosaur templatesbelow. Color your dinosaur and cut alongthe dotted line. Glue the top and bottom ofyour dinosaur to the sides of the clothespin.(see Class 5 fish illustration for clothespinposition.)

Mathematics: Counting Caterpillar You will need an egg carton, paint, markers or crayons and a pipe cleaner. Any other embellishments you like.

How old are you?

o From one side of the egg carton you willneed to cut one section for the head PLUSone section for each year of your age.

o For example, if you are two years old yourcaterpillar will be three sections long.

o Decorate and embellish as you wish, thenwrite the numbers on the sections – one foreach year of your age.

Class No. 4 Visual Science – Optical Illusion: Bee on a Flower o You will need scissors, markers, crayons or

color pencils, glue and atoothpick/pencil/chopstick/dowel or straw.

o Copy or print the template below.o Color the bee and flower. Don’t color the

center of the flower too dark.o Cut out along the solid line.o Fold on the dotted line and glue the halves

together with your stick in between.o When dry, Spin the stick between your

fingers quickly and the bee will appear to beon the flower!

Cut or trace the flower/leaves on an oldgreeting card or heavy paper from junkmail.Better yet, why not draw your ownflower/leaves in a similar size to thetemplates below. Paint/color theflower/leaves as you like and embellish asyou wish.

o Can you think of any other recycle itemsyou can use for the leaves or flower? Glueleaves to the stem.

o When your flower is ready, cut about a ½”slit on two opposite sides of the top of thestem. Insert your flower into the slits onthe roll stem.

105. Physics: Mini-Marshmallow Catapulto You will need 7 popsicle sticks, rubber

bands and a plastic spoon.o Use the rubber bands, on each end, to

secure 5 sticks together.o Slide another stick horizontally into the

bundle, one stick up from the bottom of thestack.

o Secure the spoon to the remaining stickwith rubber bands and then place ithorizontally on top of the stack.

o Attach the upper and lower horizontalsticks with another rubber band.(see illustration below or check in thelibrary or online for ideas)

o A winch is part wheel and axle, part pulley,part lever!

o Your skills and imagination will lead the wayas you create a crank winch.

o You can use simple household items likepaper towel tubes, chopstick or straw,ribbon spools or string.

o You can also pull out your favorite oldconstruction kit pieces and build your own.

o Entries must be fixed to a base no largerthan 12”x12”x12”.

Class No. 207 Weather Science: It’s Windy Out There!

Make an Anemometer*

An anemometer is an instrument that measures wind speed. It is usually made with small cups attached to a vertical shaft. Wind causes the cups and shaft to turn, the speed of turning can be used to calculate wind speed. Ten turns per minute means the wind speed is about 1 mile per hour.

For more information visit your local library or search online for more details.

o To make your anemometer you will need:• Five small (3 ounce) paper cups• One sharpened pencil with an eraser• Hole punch• Two straws• One push pin

o Punch four holes in one of the cups, acrossfrom each other near the top.

o Thread the two straws through these holesto form a cross.

o Use the pencil to gently poke a hole in thebottom center of this cup.

o

o

With the remaining four cups punch twoholes, about and inch apart, halfway downthe cup. Thread each cup through one endof each straw. Be sure all cups are facingthe same direction.Insert the pencil, eraser up, through thebottom of the center cup.

o When it is touching the straws, use the pushpin to gently go through the straws, wherethey cross, and into the pencil eraser. Don’tpush the pin too far into the eraser or thecups won’t spin.

o You can use a fan to test your anemometer.o Adjust as needed.
