“Let the children come to me”One of the most delightful privileges of being a minister is to preside at the baptism of children. As we have a lot of baptisms in our benefice, Ithought we could reflect on this enduring part of the life of the church family and to tell you about some changes we are planning with regard tohow they are organised. For many families, baptism or a christening, gives parents an opportunity to celebrate the wonderful gift of a new life coming into the world withfamily and friends. Doing so in their local church gives the family a feeling of connection and continuity with the wider community – the parish. As part of the celebration, the child is given its Christian names and parents and godparents commit with church to the child’s development andwelfare.During the preparation I do with baptism families, I try to explain when you read the order of service, the baptism service means a whole lotmore than that! To put it very simply, the child is adopted and welcomed as a member into the universal family of Christ’s Church (for ever bythe way). The parents, godparents and the local church actually make a commitment to become partners in the child’s development. When wesay in the baptism “we are children of the same heavenly Father” and then a little later “Shine as a light in the world,” this actually meanssomething in practical terms! God has a unique purpose for each of his children and when we work together as a partnership as the child growsup into an adult, the child discovers God’s purpose for their life, life will not only have greater meaning - the child, growing into an adult makesthe world a better place by “shining like a light in the world.”Increasingly, baptism families will not only be welcomed at their local church for the baptism service (where they will be welcomed by the localcongregation), but also be invited to join the many new opportunities and groups which are developing to help families discover the life of faith. For example at Kirkby Thore, they have Family Church, Messy Church, and Oasis. At Musgrave they have the Saplings for children and families. At Asby there is Messy Church. We will give details about what is available in your local area when we do the baptism preparation together. Here’s what to do is you wish to book a baptism:In the first instance contact the Rev Peter Boyles on 017683 54161. Please note at Appleby baptism families will be invited to join the FamilyCommunion services (usually on the 4th Sunday of the month at 10.45am). At St Lawrence’s Appleby the next Family Communions will be at10.45am on October 28th and December 23rd.

News from the ChurchesNew Christian resource centre launched

A new ‘Christian Resource Centre’ has beenlaunched as part of the ministry of a Carlisle citycentre church. Cornerstone on the city's DentonStreet, Carlisle, is a community café, venue forcommunity events and activities and which stocksa wide range of second hand books, DVDs andCD’s.

The new Christian Resource Centre builds on this existing work, andwill stock a good selection of Christian cards, Bibles, pre-loved Christianbooks and CDs, as well as a range of gifts. This will including journals, holding crosses and Christian adult colouring books. It is hoped thatthis new resource centre will help to fill the gap left when Wesley Owenand SPCK closed down. For more information email manager Andy Blake, contact 01228549796, visit the website or follow on Twitter.

Is the Effort Worth It?The scale of need across the world is beyond imagining. As a result ofclimate, natural disasters and our inability to live peacefully andproductively with our neighbours, famine, disease and homelessnessare the lot of millions who would regard our standard of living with envy. But what, with the best will in the world, can I … just one person … doabout it? The answer to that question is: “not much.”But this is to let statistics and figure dictate the value of our actions. And this is our mistake. Those figures, no matter how daunting, represent individual men, women and children. So imagine that youare in their situation. Any help which came your way, you’d be only tooglad to receive; for it’s your wife and your child who will receive foodand clothing, and medicine.“Love your neighbour” said Jesus numbers are not your priority. Theone or two ‘neighbours’ you can help are your concern. And we shouldfeel rewarded if we have managed to bring help to someone we willnever meet. We should thank God that we have been able to do forsomeone what we, in their situation, would wish someone did for us.So all those anonymous people across the world who have benefitedfrom your donation in Christian Aid Week would want to thank you foryour caring and generosity. This year, we raised £4308.34. It’s lessthan last year because we did not have enough volunteers to cover allthe roads … infirmity and death have reduced our numbers. But it’s stilla good result from a small community. And I’ve reckoned that in thepast twenty years we’ve raised about £80,000, which isn’t bad going.

Appleby Town Council ReportHolme Wood PathThis popular walking route was badly damaged in the December 2015floods. River-bank restoration work can only be done between Juneand September, and in 2017 there was so much summer rain thatrepairs could not be carried out. This year Cumbria County Council’spromise that work would start on 18 June and take a fortnight wasfaithfully kept, and there is general agreement that the results areexcellent.

Appleby Carnival, Taste Appleby and Appleby ShowThese three events took place in July and early August; all wereenormously successful. The fine weather played its part, but maincredit goes to the dedicated teams of organisers. Such occasionsgenerate happiness and bring the community together.

Heritage WeekendAll across Britain, September 8-9 will be Heritage Weekend. Appleby’sfine historic heritage will be on display as usual. The Moot hall CouncilChamber, with its hidden treasures, will be open to the public on bothdays.

Moot Hall Bus BayIn addition to the road markings, there is now a bus stop pole with aflag and timetable display case, making it clear that the spaces are forservice buses and coaches, not for private cars and vans. If servicebuses are obliged to pick up and set down in the road, traffic isobstructed and passengers put at risk. If coaches cannot pull into baysbecause of parked vehicles, they leave Appleby without stopping, depriving the town of trade.St Lawrence’s ChurchyardAs an experiment in wilding, in Spring Eden District Council was askedby clergy to leave the east end of the churchyard uncut. However, general opinion among residents and visitors alike was thatgravestones obscured by couch grass and ragwort did not look good.In August contractors resumed cutting.Bongate WeirIt was recently found that the condition of the weir has deteriorated, with approximately 30% of the river flow passing underneath themasonry. An urgent feasibility study was carried out in August todetermine what works needed to be carried out.Football FieldDespite all the work done on King George V Field to repair the damagecaused by previous flood damage, bare strips along drain lines and ingoal areas reappeared during the dry summer, necessitating furtherwork by Eden District Council contractors to put down more soil andseed. By early August the grass was looking much healthier, with thehope of another great season for Appleby Football Club on a decentplaying surface. Dog walkers are asked to respect the cleanliness ofthe field, as with all other play areas.

Appleby SmarterAppleby Smarter consists of a group of volunteers who meetprimarily on Monday afternoons but sometimes on other days duringthe week as well, with the aim of smartening and cleaning up thetown of Appleby. Among the many tasks we carry out are plantingbulbs and trees to provide colour and greenery to the localenvironment, picking up and disposing of litter, general gardeningand painting anything that has not been painted for quite a while;generally to prevent the town from appearing shoddy. In the last few weeks we have been painting ironwork and a benchto the rear of the Sands Chapel and continuing with the painting ofthe railway carriages at the Heritage Centre. We are still a small butenthusiastic group of mostly retired people. However, our task wouldbe made much easier if we were to double or even treble in size. Country Watch EdenCountry Watch Eden and Eden Rural Police held a meeting on 6th Julyat Appleby Police Station. Along with local farmers we met with ChrisPuttick from Ewetrack a new company who are developing someexciting new ideas to help prevent sheep rustling and worrying. It was great to meet Chris and for him to tell the group about theirproduct, its development and how it is being trialed.Ewetrack are an Ag Tech company are based in Lincoln, they are ayoung company dedicated to solving the growing industry problem oflivestock theft and worrying. Their team of engineers, technologists andfarmers have developed a clip on re-usable ear tag that monitors erraticbehavior within livestock. It does this by fusing many location datasetstogether through algorithms held in the cloud. Resulting in the farmer, manager or Police force being alerted within 30 seconds of a theft orworrying incident occurring. After acknowledgment from HRH Princeof Wales, NSA and governmental bodies Ewetrack looks to launch laterin 2018.Chris talked the group through a demonstration of the device’scapabilities, history of product development and showed insights froma live data feed to their testing flock at the Royal Veterinary College,London. The farmers quickly agreed that this technology was excitingand they could see its use in the fight against Sheep Thefts. Sheeptheft commonly occurs at night without anyone noticing until themorning when it can be too late to trace them as ear tags have beenremoved and the sheep have been moved elsewhere. Ewetrack’sdevice can spot a rustling attack within seconds so the groupbrainstormed ideas of how and who Ewetrack can alert upon an attackand ways in which to trace the sheep back to the culprit. AmandaWallbank, Group Secretary for the NFU provided some great examplesof sheep theft insurance claims and local case studies whereby the useof such technology would have prevented the claim being made.Chris left the discussion with a full page of notes to take back toEwetracks development team and agreed a trialing partnership withsome of the farmers present. Next steps are for Ewetrack to continuebuilding and testing their product with the farmer, Police and NFU’svaluable feedback in mind. Ewetrack are looking to secure strategicinvestment later this year in order to take their product to market andincrease R&D efforts. Both Appleby Police and the NFU will beextremely valuable partners to help solve this industry problem andcreate a more sustainable method of managing flocks for the future.Watch this space for updates on this type of technologies developmentto the market or find out more at www.ewetrack.co.uk.

Appleby-in-Westmorland SocietyMany Hands Make Society WorkAt the well-attended Annual General Meeting of the Appleby-in-Westmorland Society, retiring Chairman Davina Osman gave theapologies of the President, the Rev. Peter Norton for non-attendance due to ill-health. Other apologies were received fromAnn Holdsworth, Viv McKay and Jan Hall. Among a number ofpositive reports, Davina mentioned the lease reduction andevents income; she thanked Appleby Town Council for the formerand Archie Spence and Judith Sowerby for the latter.Treasurer Rosemary Spence reported an increase insubscriptions, paying visitors, sale of refreshments. The number of names included in the election of officers showedhow many of the Society’s members actively involved themselvesin its organisation. Elected were: President Peter Norton,Vice-President Olive Airey, Chairman and Membership SecretaryChris Wilson, Vice-Chairman Barry McKay, Minutes SecretaryArchie Spence and Communications Secretary Val Kendall.Retiring Treasurer Rosemary Spence said she would continueuntil someone else could be found to take over the post. TheCommittee was re-elected en bloc with the exception of EricFleming who was retiring and would consist of Ian Campbell,Jan Hall and John Hall and with the addition of Davina Osmanplus the officers. Ian Campbell and David Lowis would continueto manage the Appleby Archive but were seeking more help.John Robinson, Not the Man We Thought He WasChairman Chris Wilson introduced Andrew Connell, long-timeteacher of history of history at Appleby High School, localcouncillor at county, district and town level and former mayor.

Andy began his talk by saying that his subject was not, aspopularly thought, the Jack Robinson of the saying ‘as soon asyou can say Jack Robinson’, then proceeded to illustrate how hehad been just about everything else in public life, both locallyand nationally. There was much to tell of him, as an Applebyman, a man and a friend, a relative of the poet Wordsworth andactive on the political and social scene, in an age when manycharacters flourished and wrote. Important among these at thetime was Charlotte Smith, who had twelve children with ahusband she eventually left after having begun her writing careerto buy him out of prison. Although a leading writer on women’srights, Charlotte’s work went out of fashion and she died in illnessand obscurity. Not so John Robinson, confidant of ministers andnoblemen, a ‘fixer’ in the age of wheelers and dealers and eventsthat was the 18th century, playing off Tuftons and Lowthersagainst each other, though not succeeding in getting money dueto his kinsman William Wordsworth from ‘Wicked Jimmy’ theLowther of the day. To understand John Robinson, the positionof 18th Century Members of Parliament had to be accepted asvery different to their current place in society. Then to representa place an individual need never to have any connection with it.Not only Charlotte Smith used John Robinson as the basis fordisreputable characters in her writings; he became known as ‘SirAppulby’, an example of human degredation and oftenlampooned in the days when literature was also a debased partof society – yet he died in office, regarded by some as ‘honestand reliable’.Vice-Chairman Barry McKay spoke of Andy Connell’s ‘learninglightly worn, the mark of an excellent speaker’ in concluding withthe vote of thanks.

few days later, they saw that the heap of rubble had disappeared, andcouldn't resist commenting that God was indeed a fast worker!

Psalm 8In this harvest season, the created universe can inspire ourworship, as it did for David: ‘Lord, our Lord, how majestic is yourname in all the earth!’ (Psalm 8:1).

What did David see? ‘When I consider your heavens, the workof your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set inplace’ (3). David was moved to worship as he meditated on thenight sky and saw the moon and stars pointing to their Maker. His words point to the work of a great artist, whose art reflectsthe character of the artist Himself. How vast is the universe inwhich we live! It speaks of a creation shot through with meaningand purpose, demonstrating the tremendous wisdom and powerof God. As creation speaks of the greatness of God, it demandsour allegiance and loyalty to Him in all aspects of our lives.

What did David feel? ‘what is mankind that you are mindful ofthem, human beings that you care for them?’ (4). In the light ofcreation’s vastness, we can feel a little insignificant! Why dohuman beings exist on this tiny planet in such a vast universe? However, David goes on to answer his own question: ‘You havemade them a little lower than the angels and crowned them withglory and honour.’ (5). Human beings have a unique relationshipto God, because we are created in His image. We are the meansby which the invisible God is made visible to His creation. Weare called to be partners with God in doing His work in the world,to care for the earth rather than exploiting it. It is a preciousresource, along with the creatures it contains!

‘The glory of God is the human person fully alive’ (Irenaeus ofLyons).Better still, in the Authorised Version:

3. When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moonand the stars, which thou hast ordained;4. What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?5. For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hastcrowned him with glory and honour.

St James the Least of All

Editor: The Rev Dr Gary Bowness continues histongue-in-cheek letters from ‘Uncle Eustace’…

On how to make the most of that diocesan‘residential course’

The RectorySt James the LeastMy dear Nephew DarrenYour enthusiasm for attending training courses has, until now, baffledme. Why should you want to become a better preacher, whencongregations only use the sermon for catching up on lost sleep? Whatmore do you need to learn about time management than being able torecognise those fixed points of 12.30pm for the pre-luncheon sherryand 6pm for a stiff gin? And what is the point of learning about how tolead Bible study groups when all you will end up discussing is whofailed to provide flowers for the altar last Sunday? But after this last week, dear boy, I take it all back. The bishop sent meon a week’s pre-retirement course. Of course, he was dropping hints, but until I reach my century, I have little intention of relinquishing avocation to annoying parishioners and frustrating the plans of bishops. What else, after all, is parish ministry about? The first move is to arrive early, receive your room allocation and thendiscard it. Tour the whole establishment, find the best room and thenunpack and make sure your dog is nicely settled in the centre of thebed, just in time for the arrival of the intended occupant. I naturallyapologise effusively for my innocent mistake, begin to removepossessions and dog while hoping that he will excuse all the hairs onhis bed. This ensures that he magnanimously offers to take youroriginal room.At the first session, you need to establish the ground rules – and witha course leader, who in my opinion, should still have been wearingshort trousers, it was all too easy. You make it clear that you areextremely deaf and so all the lectures will, sadly, be wasted on you.You also add that you will need some time alone to prepare for a surfeitof funerals which inexplicably all came in the day before you left andthat you also will need time out to exercise your dog.By the end of that first session, you will have accounted for yourabsence for the rest of the week. In my case, it passed delightfully withgentle strolls in the grounds, visits to the local second-hand bookshopsand much silent meditation in one’s room. I attended the final sessionin order to congratulate the leader for his magnificent course, waseffusive in my comments on those wretched evaluation forms and onmy return wrote a letter of thanks to the bishop for having thought I wasworthy of receiving pre-retirement training – while also noting that Iwas sure it would be of use when I begin to make plans for that happyevent in a few decades time.Your loving uncle,Eustace
