Sustainability - definition

‘Sustainable Development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This involves addressing economic, social and environmental factors, and their interdependence in an organization's decision-making and activities’

hebben over de vissen in de

zee, de vogels in de lucht,

over de dieren op het land, de

Politics

Who will vote on a party that: Raises energy prizes Promotes eating less meat Promotes public transport Put taxes on imported products according to

the carbon foot print Etc.

They promise but when it comes to measures they need compromises

Insight in technology and chains

Fragmentizing The big picture Not able to make calculations, to

compare units, etc.

Strawberries

Eating strawberries out of the season

Imported from Chili by airplane

Between 2 and 4 kg of kerosene for 1 kg of strawberries

The government puts taxes on the plastic packaging of 12 grams because packaging is bad for the environment

What kind of message is this?

Sustainable Energy -

without the hot air

David J.C. MacKay

Scenario for GB Use of energy

compared with alternative sources

Alternative 10% most windy

area covered for wind energy

All roofs covered for sun energy

500 km coast for wave energy

Economics

Preoccupation with economical growth 10 years of 2% growth means +21,9% of

extra money to spend by people So it also means that energy use has to

be 21,9% more efficient to stay at the same level There is a straight relation between

economics and load on the environment

Human being and policy

What did 40 years of environmental policy bring us?

Conclusion

Sustainability? Not according to the definition Mostly only the P from Planet Profit and People have to taken into account

More sustainable? Not according to the definition

Less polluting? Not according to many figures

And now?

30-9-2011 Sustainability and Packaging 27

And now?

We need to invest in alternative technologies We have to pay attention to the other P’s May be adjust our demands and realize

how prosperous we are? But it is absolutely clear that we need a

drive By the way: it will come naturally

because energy prices will go sky high
