1.0 Installation

1.1 Hardware installation for 3D equipment 1.1.1 Working environment requirements of the equipment

• Do not use the equipment in dusty places. Keep the working area and equipment clean.

• Do not store or use the equipment in places clustered with chemical smoke.

• Do not use the equipment in places with great vibration.

• Avoid strong light interference from backside.

• Ensure that there is enough space around the aligner to mount and dismount the clamps or to

remove a tire. (Distance to other machines around the aligner and the lift is 1 meter. Please keep

distances between lift and machine as shown in the following picture.

Use single 220V AC power. Please care for a good gr ound connection of all parts of the aligner. In countries with known curre nt electrical fluctuations the use of a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) is recommended.

1.1.2 Distances and measurements

• L= distance between camera and turntable 2.05m - 2.75m

• L1 / L2 = middle of the two skits must be perpendicular to the middle of the camera bar.

• L3 / L4 = Distance must be the same to ensure that the bar is parallel to the front of the lift.

• Distance between columns (on a 4-post lift): 2,65m minimal.

• Distance camera - rear targets: 8m maximum.

• Height of the lift: 0 to 1,70m

• Lift level: less than 5mm difference, diagonal

1.1.3 Basic installation steps of 3D aligner

Before installation, please check the goods carefully. See whether the outer package is damaged, the

goods are complete according to the goods list. If anything abnormal occurs, please urgently communicate

with us for solution.

After inspection, open the outer package of the equipment.

Take the column out of the wooden case; lay the column down that the camera bar can be mounted on the

slider (it is mounted on the backside of the column).

Unpack the camera bar, and fix it centered on the slider of the column. (4x M8)

Fix the steel wire in the camera bar. (Not necessary on the SSENCE 400) Mount the wire base on the slider,

fix it with the counter nut and connect it with the M6 screw.

Transport locking device

To avoid damage by counter weight during

transports it is blocked. Unscrew the

locking device.

Install the guide pulley on the top. (see

also next picture)

Take care that the wire is running in one line with motor pulley and support pulley. Install the column cap

and raise the column carefully.

When setting up the bar observe the sliding counter weight. The weight is very heavy.

1.1.4 Install the cabinet.

Unpack the cabinet and clean it. Install the support brackets for the four clamps with targets on the cabinet.

Unpack Computer, keyboard, and mouse and install everything in the

cabinet. Please take care of the correct connection !

The plugs are marked with little stickers. Follow the scheme you will see

picture on the right side.(also on PC) It shows the correct connections.

URGENT!! If you have more machines: Be absolutely sure that you use the right Computer. The calibration of the camera bar is stored on the hard disk. If you use the wrong computer you will get problems while installation. Computer and bar must be from the same serial number.

Install and arrange outer power source; and ensure that the voltage is stable and circuit is safe.

1.1.5 Connecting the camera control board

There are two big cables on the machine. The cable to the camera control board and the cable for motor

control (SSENCE 400: there is no cable for motor control)

Connect the camera control cable with the board behind the camera bar support as shown in the next

picture.

There are numbers on the cable and on the board and scheme is shown also inside the black cap.

The other end of the cable must be connected with the computer and with the power supply inside on the

machine. There also are unique numbers to connect.

Three plugs (USB 1,2,3) must be connected to the PC. (see scheme)

Two small plastic plugs: one is connected to the power supply (the small one)

the other is connected to the bridge board. Just take care of the numbers on

the cables and connect the number pairs.

1.1.6 Connecting the motor control cable

Also the motor control cable has numbers on each wire. Connect the plugs according to corresponding wire

numbers with moderate plug and unplug strength. There are three plugs.

These wires go to:

• Limiter switch top

• Limiter switch bottom

• Motor power

If the bar is running over limiter switches on top or bottom please check the plugs if they are connected right. If necessary cha nge plugs.

Connect the monitor signal cable (VGA) and all power cables.

1.1.7 Assembling of the calibration tool (option)

The calibration tool and ride height tool are optio ns. There is a special manual for calibration.

Open the package; take out the components; and assemble the components according to the installation

diagram. See exploded drawings for standard assemble.

You receive two boxes with calibration accessories.

1.1.8 Grounding of complete System

Connect ALL ground wires in the machine to the ground screw, and this to the ground..

Slow performance of the aligner might be due to a insufficient grounding.

1.2 Software installation for 3D equipment

The software is already pre installed on the comput er. If it is necessary to install the complete new system there is a special manual available. Please see also our homepage.

• Updates of software are always assigned to databases. The databases and SSENCE Basic

software are protected by Sentinel Hard Lock. That means your software will not work without the

attached dongle. Usually the dongle is in a USB port in front of the computer (with a red LED). To

avoid a loss of that device we recommend to set the dongle on the backside and printer in the front.

• If not, plug the hard lock in a USB port on front (or back) side of the computer

• If the red LED lights, everything is OK. Don't unplug the dongle while running; otherwise you can

not access the database anymore.

• In case of a complete system recovery you can find all necessary drivers on out homepage.

• Windows 7 Ultimate Operating system.

The OS is pre-installed in the factory. for system recovery

the license is delivered as CD. SSENCE uses Windows 7

Ultimate 32-Bit.

2.0 Working with SSENCE - wheel alignment software

After starting the software you see:

There are 6 buttons on the main interface with specific functions as following:

1. Start new alignment

2. Input the license number to get the history of the existing measurement data

3. Select the existing clients; add new clients and delete the old clients

4. Enter SETUP for program function settings

5. HELP-button shows you the manual of SSENCE

6. Quit SSENCE.

Buttons 4, 5 and 6 are on every screen of the alignment software. You can enter SETUP or HELP during

every step of the program.

2.1 Alignment with SSENCE software

Press in the start screen to make a new alignment.

2.1.1 Select manufacturer:

Pending on the database you have selected in "SETUP" a list with manufacturers is coming up.

After selecting the manufacturer of your customer's car, will appear. Press this to go to the next

screen.

2.1.2 Select model:

Select the model and click to end car selection.

2.1.3 Select or add customer information:

• Input customers data and confirm by pressing

• Select without entries to skip customers data entry.

• You can also skip after one or more data entry.

• You must skip or enter name and vehicle separately.

• All data will be stored in the customer database and can be used for later alignments

• If you skip all data from beginning on, the result will not be saved in the database.

Select to find an existing customer in data base.

2.1.4 Prepare for alignment.

• Ensure that the turntable is locked.

• Place vehicle on the lift, think about enough place to roll the car in a direction and back without any

vibrations of the car.

• Check air pressure in the tires

• Place the targets on the wheels and start the alignment software.

With the F11 Key you get the camera view of the sof tware in any situation of the software. If you are not sure what happens press F11 to check situation of the targets. There are tool-programs to support the alignment. W henever it is possible to use tools there is this button availabl e. With this info-icon you can control the communicati on of targets and system. If all 4 tyres are blue, all targets ar e connected. If there is a red one, please make sure, that there are no i tems between camera and target. You can also check with F11.

If you move over the small dummy car with the mouse yellow numbers appear. This is a index for reflection of t he targets. The fewer, the better is the value. If values are highe r than 100, clean targets and check for damages.

This is only for SSENCE 400 If you are on the start screen, press F11 to start the camera view of the machine.

Unlock the bar slider and bring cameras by moving the bar in a position where all four targets are

completely inside the pictures.

Lock the slider again. Keep the lift in this position to make the alignment. If you move the lift,

check cameras again with F11.

2.1.5 Two wheel alignment and four wheel alignment:

Two wheel alignment is only for a fast check of the vehicle. Only a complete four wheel alignment can give exact diagnostic.

The operation steps of the 2 wheel alignment are the same as 4 wheel alignment. Only values and

adjustments for rear axle are not present. Please refer to the instructions for four-wheel alignment for the

procedures of two-wheel alignment.

For the 2 wheel alignment it is enough to fix the front targets on the car. All other steps are the same.

2.1.6 Vehicle Load and fuel level

Some cars require a weight and fuel load for correct measurement. This will be displayed according to the

selected vehicle type. Please take care of that for correct measurement.

TOOL: Move the mouse over this to display the single wheel measurement .

click to go on with alignment.

2.1.6.1 TOOL: Single Wheel measurement

If there is no possibility to move the car the push-pull to find the middle of the horizontal axle

can also be done by a single wheel measurement. Just start the single wheel measurement in

the loading screen. The tool tells you to lift the car .

After lifting the program marks the tire which must be done. (see next page for pictures) The

single wheel will be measured by rotating backward and forward again. Follow the steps in the

program until all four tires have been measured. This replaces the push-pull routine.

This function is only available in the 4-wheel measurement.

The program selects all tires one after the other. This function also can be used if the regular

push-pull brings error messages because of shaking.

Next wheel will be selected automatically. Do so with all tires.

2.1.7 Lock the steering wheel

• Ensure that the turntables are locked.

• Protect the vehicle from rolling off the lift.

• Fix the steering wheel by adopting the steering wheel holder.

• Be sure that you can push or pull the car (if necessary add transition block beneath the turntable.)

• and click to enter next step.

2.1.8 Push vehicle

It does not matter if push or pull the vehicle. The next step is working in any direction. Be sure that turn tables and steering ar e blocked.

Be sure that you can push or pull the vehicle. After blocking the steering wheel the program wants you to

move the car in any direction.

Push the vehicle back, program counts down to zero. Stop here and wait until calculation is done.

Push the vehicle forward, program counts to zero Stop here and wait until calculation is done.

Wait after each move for change of arrow direction. Take care that the car is not moving after each step.(while calculating)

If abnormal shaking occurs or the prompt that the target disk is out od range, "Re-Measure" button appears

on the screen. The measurement should be done again until the vehicle pushing is correctly completed.

If abnormal shaking occurs, check if the clamp with target is fixed correctly. Check suspension parts if there is too much play. R epeat measurement by pressing the re-measure button. If you go on withou t repeating there will be a large deviation in measurement data.

2.1.9 Lock the brake

Remove the steering blocker and install the brake blocker. Then remove the bolts of the turntable, and click

to go to the next step.

2.1.10 Caster Swing (King Pin measurement)

According to different vehicle types, you can choos e between 10° and 20° measurement angle. Default valu e is 10°, if you want to switch to 20° simply click on t he 20° button.

This example is with 10° angle:

Move the steering wheel in the shown direction, stabilize and wait.

Turn the steering wheel again as the arrow shows, stop and wait without moving

At last, turn the steering wheel to the middle and wait for final calculation.

If abnormal shaking occurs, check if target is fixe d correctly on the clamp, check if brake is fixed and if the turntables are u nlocked. Do the caster swing again by pressing "Re-Measure". For a fast measurement of only camber and toe you c an skip this funktion. Data will be shown in the next picture only for cam ber and toe then.

TOOT will only be calculated if you use the 20° ang le. This will be shown in the next table.

2.1.11 Data before adjustment

If caster swing was successful you will come directly to the data interface before adjustment. Here you can

see entries of the database and in opposite the current data of the vehicle.

On the left side you see the data of the car in the selected database, on the right side the values of the

current measurement. Data are spitted in FRONT and REAR. If the caster swing was skipped you see no

caster and no KPI

This brings you back to the beginning of caster swing, if you think that the measurement was not

OK or if you want to add the values for caster and KPI.

OK! Go on with measurement.

The next step is important to have a straight steer ing wheel after adjustment. Please be very accurate with that. A wa ter level is recommended to level the steering wheel. Block also brake and steering.

2.1.20 Wheel adjustment - What the program shows

This is rear axle Delta = max. difference due to database DB = value of database

2.1.22.1 TOOL - Toe Adjust Help

Main function: At some vehicles, for the convenience of toe-in adjustment, it is easier to carry

out the adjustment after turning the steering wheel to the extreme position. The function of

"Toe Adjust Help" is to lock the toe value first, and then turn the steering wheel to a proper

position for the convenience of toe adjustment. Values are frozen in the moment where you

enter this tool program.

Loosen the steering wheel holder, lock the brake holder, click to go on.

2.1.22.2 TOOL - Remove tire to adjust (with optional adapter)

Main function: If steering rods are hidden in the chassis sometime it is helpful to dismount the

front wheels to have a better access for adjustment.

To work with that tool there is a special rim adapt er necessary. You can have this with 4 and 5 holes to fix the cla mps. The adapter is option, will not be delivered with machi ne.

Lift the car that you can remove the tire.

2.1.22.3 Toe Curve procedure

Main function: Measurement of the constant values of the toe of vehicles with this feature (eg

Passat B5 and Audi A6). Measured is the difference between the toe in rest position and the

toe with a 60 mm increased body.

Raise the vehicle body by 60mm according to the picture, click the confirmation when done.

After the measurement is finished, lower the vehicle and chassis to deflect suspension. Click

2.2.1.1 Ride Height Measurement (with optional target pointer)

If there is a vehicle with adjustable suspension height, you may take some measurements on

the chassis. A helpful tool for this is the target pointer (option). You can define points by tipping

with the pointer to selected points on the chassis. According to the distance results the

standard alignment data can be selected.

This function is here to take some control data of the car.

3.1 Manage customers, earlier and new alignments by number plate.

There are two ways to get into the customers databa se. If you go by existing license number you can find t he customer and activate customer to start new alignment. If you go by customer you can edit Customer, name a nd alignments. You can also start a new alignment. The usual way to create new customers is over the n ew alignment in main menu.

To edit the customer data just click on the customers name and press ( or double click left)

Now you can add or delete a customer.

4.0 Setup menu:

All screens in the setup menu are marked with a red headline. In this headline you see:

4.1 Database

Main function to maintain the vehicle type database: This feature is working with the current installed

database. If you are not sure go to <PARAMETER> th check which database is active. You can add new

manufacturers and models ; modify, add and delete the customized vehicles and vehicle data.

It is not possible to change or delete cars of the current main database. They are protected. All changes are collected in th e user database H3D.mdb.

4.1.5 Input data for the new vehicle

Remember to check if your values are total values o r single for each side. For example a toe with 1° is probable a total toe o f 1° and within 0°30´ left and 0°30'right.

This is your input in the mask for the new car.

Just click in the mask to enter the values.

First click in the left column --> Tolerances are for left side

Then click in the right colum --> Tolerances are for right side

• That means the toe (total toe 1°) must be divided by 2 to find the toe left and toe right,

• PTOL refers to the positive tolerance; and NTOL refers to the negative tolerance. The tolerances

(positive and negative) are valid in this original entry for positive and negative ON EACH SIDE.

• The value "DB" under the field toe shows the TOTAL TOE of the data base.

• The value "actual" shows the total toe of current measurement.

There are cars with different values for left and r ight on camber. On all three (camber, caster, toe) can be given different values for left and right. On toe and caster (where it makes no sence to give differe nt values) only the left side of the tolerances will be taken as standard to lerance for alignment. To enter different values for the right side just clic k on the right camber.

This is only for cars with different camber left and right.

Double click the left column of camber standard value, the left side will become highlighted. Both tolerances

on right side are assigned to left standard value.

Double click the right column of camber standard value, the right side will become highlighted. Both

tolerances on right side are assigned to right standard value.

Simple switch between them by mouse to check that.

After the input, click to save return to model screen. Also here the new car is marked with a

4.2 Calibration

There are three items to calibrate.

For each calibration is a separate calibration manu al available.

You need to calibrate the single items if:

• Camera calibration: A camera in the camera bar was exchanged. For calibration you need special

equipment. Should be done by service staff only.

• Clamp calibration: Can be done by the user himself. Must be done if a clamp or a target was

changed, a clamp was falling down, steering wheel not straight in several cases, or anything else

has been replaced on clamps and targets.

• Ride Height calibration: The Ride Height tool is an Option to measure distances on the chassis.

Use this only if you have the tool and the calibration jig.

5. Precautions & maintenance

5.1 Computer • On the computer is Windows 7 Ultimate 32 Bit Software as operating system.

• This computer should not be used for other applications (except data Backup is recommended.)

• If you have to install a printer, first install software then connect the printer. Also refer the manual of

the used device.

5.2 Software • Always shut down Windows in a regular way. Never press Reset button or disconnect electricity if

system is running, it is possible to damage the software and hardware of the systems;

• Please do not modify any settings in BIOS or in the operation system. (Warranty will expire if it is

changed)

• Do not use the computer for other applications than wheel alignment. Do not install any other

software without consulting Hofmann Megaplan

• On the front is a USB Hard Lock plugged. Please do not unlock, it is necessary for working with

database.

This hard lock is your licence for the database. D o not loose it, otherwise you have to buy a new license for databa se.

• It is required to avoid any impacts of static electricity on the hardware equipment. It is important to

ground the system correctly.

• Urgently keep Software licenses and drivers disks.

• Make backups from working files. All data from alignment customers and additional cars are stored

in D:\SSENCE\DB\H3D.MDB. Make a copy of this on a USB stick. The H3D customer database is

not protected.

• There is a CD ROM delivered together with the Hard lock. Content of this:

o driver for sentinel hard lock

o basic SSENCE software

o database update at the time of

5.3 Target disks maintenance • Keep the surface of target disk clean. Use soft dry cloth to wipe it and avoid surface scratches.

• Do not remove target from clamp. Position between target and clamp may not be changed.

• When changing the target plate, it is necessary to update the target files.

Order this with the serial number and the position of the target at Hofmann Megaplan. Also give us

a picture of the sticker on the backside of target.

• When fixing clamp with target, use protection strap (Art No. 659030) for fixing the clamp on the rim.

• Do not remove the sticker on backside of the target.

5.4 Clamp maintenance • The clamps shall not be damaged, broken or deformed;

• Regularly lubricate the screw rod and sliding bar to ensure the flexibility.

• Regularly fasten each connecting bolt.

• If unused, put it on the bracket on the cabinet to avoid damage which may influence measuring

5.5 Turntable maintenance The maintenance of turntable mainly includes periodic cleaning, lubrication and fastening of all movable

parts.

Method:

• Turn over the turntable with the upper disk facing down.

• Disassemble the fixing bolt; remove the finger, grillage frame and lower disk.

• Clean the upper and lower disk, grinding shelf and ball bearing.

• Install all parts in sequence after the ball bearing is lubricated with grease.

• If the finger is loose, the fixing bolt must be fastened.

When the car is moved up or down the lift, be sure to have fixed the turntable lock pins.

8.0 Usage and meaning of the LEDs around cameras

The LEDs 1,2,3 and 4 show status of the reflection targets.

LED green: Targets are OK and recognized by the system.

LED red: The target is covered or not recognized by the system for any other reason.

If the target LEDs are red, switch to camera view (F11). This can be helpful finding the problem.

The LEDs 5,6,7 and 8 shows directions in which the vehicle should be pushed or pulled. Depending on

Software situation the red LEDs are an indicator for direction to move vehicle forward, backward, steer to

left or right.

The LEDs are helpful if for any reason the screen is out of sight.
