The 1970s were the real advent of Folk Rock artists like The Mamas & the Papas, Simon & Garfunkel and Neil Young. More recently, folks like Ryan Adams, the Head and the Heart, Mumford and Sons, the Lumineers, and other similarly minded artists are pitching in their energy to keep the folk-rock aesthetic alive and well. With Hoizers star image being formed around the aesthetics of the folk rock and blues genres in his attempt to recycle culture leads to an immediate associations and a sudden comparison to artist such as Tim buckle, Neal diamond-van Morrison and bob Dylan .

Hoizers image has been constructed to a degree to keep in bounds of the codes and conventions of the genres therefore making him appear as a serious singer-songwriter who’s musical craft means more than his attire.

Amen. Amen.”The song serves simultaneously as a message about human rights, a commentary about Hozier's upbringing in what he calls a "cultural landscape that is blatantly homophobic," and a strong statement about the institutional homophobia in Putin's Russia
