HUSTEP broadens yourhorizons!The Hokkaido University Short-Term Exchange

Program (HUSTEP) is a ‘junior year abroad’ type

program designed to provide undergraduate

students from affiliated universities with the

opportunity to study in Japan at Hokkaido

University. Participants in this program take a

wide variety of classes offered in English in the

fields of Culture and Society, Environment,

Science and Technology. Students also have

the chance to study the Japanese language. In

addition, some participants can pursue inde-

pendent study research under the guidance of

a faculty member. There will also be an oppor-

tunity to take part in numerous traditional and

contemporary Japanese cultural activities.

Students admitted to the program are eligible

to apply for a scholarship.

HUSTEP provides a safe and caring environ-

ment in which to carry out your academic stud-

ies and broaden your horizons. Participating in

HUSTEP will help to prepare you for the future

with knowledge and experiences that will last a

lifetime. In addition, you will have a wonderful

opportunity to meet and make friends with

many Japanese people as well as international

students from all around the world who come

to study at Hokkaido University. We

would like to invite motivated uni-

HUSTEP offers students the choice of participating in the Research Course orthe Semester Abroad Course. The Research Course allows students to studyfor one year and take classes in English as well as Japanese language classes.In addition, students have the option to do an independent study under theguidance of a faculty supervisor. As part of the independent study, studentsmay have a chance to study in a lab or attend seminars with Japanese stu-dents in various faculties. The Semester Abroad Course allows students tostudy for one semester and take classes in English and Japanese languageclasses. Students should choose carefully since switching courses is not per-mitted. Course details are listed below.

Course Overview

* Students must take a minimum of 10 hours of classes (7 classes) per week to meet visa requirements.** Research Course students are required to obtain at least 10 credits in each semester, and at least 8 of these credits should be from core classes.*** In exceptional cases, a different internationally recognized English test result may be accepted.

Submit applications in October

To be eligible to apply for HUSTEP, students must:1. be from exchange partner universities2. be enrolled and pay tuition fees at their home universities during study in Japan3. have completed at least two years of undergraduate study prior to arrival in Japan4. have GPA of 3.0 (B) or better on a 4.0 scale or equivalent5. be proficient in English. Non-native English speakers must have a score of at least TOEFL iBT 79 or IELTS 6.5*** 6. be able to arrive in Sapporo by late September or first week of April Please check HUSTEP application guidelines for complete eligibility requirements.

A detailed syllabi for all of the classes is available at the HUSTEP website. The above class list is from 2015-2016 and will change. The classes listed above and the independent study are worth 2 credits each. The Japanese language classes are 1 or 2 credits each.

“My independent study was a great learning experience”

For my independent study I got to participate in aweekly seminar related to my major and read twobooks on Zainichi Koreans under the guidance of

my independent study supervisor. It really improvedmy Japanese and most of all made me more aware ofdifferent minorities in Japan. I also enjoyed the beauti-ful nature and winter sports in Hokkaido. In HUSTEPthere was not only interesting classes but a warm envi-ronment created by the staff and most importantly, allthe friends I made during my stay.

HUSTEP was the best time of mylife. It was full of opportunities tofind out more about myself and
