HOLDEN PEOPLE

AMBASSADORS fOR SALES AND SAVINGS

Holden PeoPle october 20132

The Chevrolet SS, the brand’s first rear-wheel-drive performance sedan in 17 years, has been one of the most anticipated arrivals in the American enthusiast market since its NASCAR debut back in February.

The SS is a niche product, but it’s just the sort of car United States dealers can’t wait to have in their showrooms. The car is, of course, based on the VF Commodore built by HVO for both Australian and New Zealand markets. And we’re also exporting the updated HVO-built Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle to the United States.

All of which speaks volumes about the world-class quality and performance of the cars we build in Elizabeth, a fact of which we can all be proud.

Since the last edition of Holden People, there has been a change of government in Australia. We’ve been talking to the new Coalition government about appropriate support for the local auto manufacturing and components industries.

The outcome of the talks with the government will be important to Holden and the entire industry. However, regardless of what is

happening in Canberra, we need to stay focused on winning and keeping customers. We have a great model line-up and compete in every major segment: the VF is meeting our sales expectations, we’ve recently added the new Trax small SUV and the Malibu sedan, and we will soon release an updated Colorado Ute and 7 for Model Year 2014.

The Senior Leadership Team is very aware of how much we have asked of you this year. Without your efforts to pull together to design, build and sell great cars, Holden wouldn’t be in a position to send vehicles like the Chevrolet SS to the home of rear-wheel-drive V8 performance sedans.

Great job, team.

Now selling in more than 20 markets globally and recently launched into the Australian market, Trax is a strong contender for Holden in its fight for a share of the fastest growing segment of the car market.

David Johnson and James McIntosh are part of the local engineering team that collaborated with the Trax homeroom in Korea on its engine and transmission calibrations and suspension tuning. The result is a fun-to-drive, fuel efficient Holden Trax for Australia and other global markets.

After two years on the program, James is excited by his involvement and influence on a brand new car.

“The guys in the team here have done a really good job in managing the expectations from different GM regions around the world and executing it well. It’s a buzz to see the Trax on the road.”

Meanwhile David hopes we can bring in enough cars to meet anticipated demand.

“Globally the car is in demand. By all reports it is selling very well in other parts of the world,” he said.

David explained the extensive calibrations the Holden team worked to achieve.

“We were responsible for the engine and transmission calibrations to the 1.8 litre version of the car everywhere it is sold including North America, Europe, Asia, South America and Australia.

“The engine itself doesn’t change between markets. What does change is the different hardware they put into the cars. We have to accommodate that. For example, on this 1.8 litre engine we had about 16 different calibrations for All Wheel Drive, Front Wheel Drive, automatic and manual transmissions

with three different gearboxes and five drive ratios,” David said.

It sounds like a lot of important work but for the uninitiated, what does calibration involve?

“We have a controller that has an operating system that is designed to run an engine or transmission system. We have to go through and put in all the detail to make that generic software work with each particular set of hardware,” he said.

It is specialised work for which the local Holden team has earned a reputation as global experts.

“I think one of the real strengths of the Holden engine and transmission calibration team is that we do our calibrations together. I think that shows in the quality of the product. James and I work really closely together at the Proving Ground. There is rarely a day that goes by where I don’t work directly with James,” David said.

Holden’s engine and transmission calibration team has played a critical role in bringing to market Trax, GM’s first global small Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV).

Holden in the Driveway recognises the fact that Holden employees and retirees are the brand’s greatest ambassadors.

It allows all Holden employees and retirees to offer friends and extended family the benefit of a special discount of $500 - $3,000, depending on the model, when they purchase any new Holden, including HSVs .

Shaun is Holden’s best ambassador who has helped to sell nine Holdens to friends so far this year. Meanwhile Queensland Zone Manager, Leo Leontaridis has notched up an impressive four sales. Kellie and Zone

Manager SA/NT David Forrest are working their way up the list having both sold four cars to friends and family.

Shaun feels a particular responsibility to champion the program.

“Given that I lead the pricing I do take it upon myself to get my friends and family into a car if they are interested,” Shaun said.

“The Captiva 5 and 7 would be the two main cars but I have also sold a number of SSV Commodore sedans and Sportwagons as well as a couple of HSVs. A lot of my friends

are having babies and the Captiva is a very good option for them,” he said.

Shaun’s knowledge of the features built into each model helps him communicate the benefits of each product. Kellie on the other hand, says she knows little about the inner workings of cars but she understands her family’s needs.

“My family are in the engineering industry in the country and were looking at a vehicle like the Hilux. Getting the Holden in the Driveway deal made it very attractive for them to move to the Colorado,” Kellie said.

Kellie, Shaun and the other enthusiastic Holden ambassadors urge all employees to get behind the program.

“It’s a great program that can provide extra value for family and friends for very limited output on our part to deliver really great savings on a car,” Shaun said.

“It is important for people like myself who don’t know a lot about each product to know they can still be ambassadors for the program, promoting the fact that a discount is available” Kellie added.

“Everyone can and should be a Holden advocate. Every sale counts towards the health and sustainability of the company. In turn, this provides secure and fulfilling employment,” Leo said.

David Forrest is working on getting a friend out of his C Class Mercedes into a VF Calais-V Series and another friend into a VF Sportwagon instead of his current Toyota Camry. He has used his extensive network outside of work to sell cars to members of several sporting clubs including swimming, water polo, footy, surf lifesaving and lacrosse.

“We build great value vehicles and I enjoy the opportunity through Holden in the Driveway to help my family and friends to purchase a vehicle that will benefit both them and Holden,” David said.

Over the past few months, changes to the way the program is communicated have seen a big growth in the rate of sales resulting from the Holden in the Driveway program.

“We have seen a massive increase to 60-70 sales a month where previously it was about 18,” Shaun said.

Tim Newman, Engineering Group Manager – Chassis, said that getting recognition for the great work the team performed was a highlight.

“For me, getting positive first-hand feedback from the motoring journalists and Garth Tander on the extensive work the chassis team has done over the last four years was very uplifting,” Tim said.

“We had great feedback on the vehicle’s balance, braking and steering feel, areas that we had given significant focus to throughout the development of the Redline chassis.

“It goes to show what we can achieve with

people passionate about the product and working towards common goals.”

Robert Trubiani is the Vehicle Dynamics Ride and Handling Engineer for the Redline series and said the Media Launch Track Day was a buzz.

“I was very proud to watch the Redline vehicles flash under the Melbourne sign down the front straight at Phillip Island at full noise,” Rob said.

“The media were very excited to talk about the car. Many commented on how great the Redlines looked, particularly the White SS-V Redline Sedan with the Black wheels.

“One of the stand out features of the Redline is the staggered tyre set-up with Ultra High Performance 245/40R19 front tyres and 275/35R19 rear tyres, as well as the huge front and rear stabiliser bars. This gives the vehicle outstanding handling performance with great traction out of corners and a very flat vehicle stance through the corners. This was not lost on the media with many people commenting about how sporty and at home it felt around the racetrack.

“The media had a lot of fun on the drag strip that was set-up on the main straight where the new Launch Control feature in Competitive Mode worked a treat.”

RED HOT REVIEWS fOR REDLINE

Australian motoring media have flashed a green light for the VF SS V Redline performance hero. And judging by reviews and the feedback from some of the Holden engineers who hosted the Media Launch Track Day at Phillip Island, Redline is a red hot favourite.

The SS will be Chevrolet’s new rear-wheel-drive performance sedan and will be available for customers to buy later this year.

During his recent visit to Holden Vehicle Operations (HVO), Executive Chief Engineer - Performance Luxury Cars, Dave Leone, expressed his delight with the car that will go into showrooms as a premium Chevrolet offering.

“The team in Adelaide has done an awesome job - congrats to the entire team for a job well done!” Dave said.

HVO Launch Director, Nick Baloglou said it was an exciting milestone in the VF Commodore program.

“We’re really pleased. Production was ahead of schedule and quality targets were met,” Nick said.

“It’s early September now and we’re ahead of the launch curve which is fantastic. This achievement, with great quality, is a terrific reflection of the hard work our employees have put in right across the plant,” he said.

The first shipment of locally manufactured Chevrolet SS vehicles is now on the high seas, destined to arrive at the port of Benecia in San Francisco before being transported to dealerships around the United States.

The Design Fabrication Studio in which the Holden Fabrication team works belies the sophisticated nature of the people and the projects undertaken there.

This is a department built on intellectual property and finely honed skills to create fully driveable show cars from clay through to hard surface fabrication.

Headline worthy show cars like Elfin, Efijy, Hurricane and Colorado Showcar 2011 are just a few examples of their work that draws international acclaim and local pride.

Design Director, Richard Ferlazzo said Holden is one of only two General Motors studios that can actually build concept cars from the ground up.

“It’s one of the very few studios anywhere in the world that can build concept cars in-house,” he said.

Manager Creative Hard Modelling, Design Fabrication, Paul Clarke said he’s proud of the Design Fabrication team’s achievements.

“I am very, very proud that my team is talked about as one of the pillars of the Design team and has had such a major influence on General Motors,” he said.

Paul’s infectious enthusiasm and commitment set the tone for the 17 strong

team made up of industrial designers, engineering pattern makers (of which British immigrant Paul is one), clay modellers, panel makers and spray painters.

Two colleagues from General Motors Korea (GMK), Duckhyung Lim and Taeyoung Choi, are currently in house honing their experience.

“GMK is expanding its design capabilities and is now looking to get into fabrication work. Our plan is to cross pollinate. I spent time in Korea in 2010 and again earlier this year. Next year, when their facility is up and running, I am looking to send some of our guys over to help them move towards the capability that we have developed here over more than 10 years,” Paul said.

“This is the second secondment for Duckhyung and Taeyoung with my team. We are collaborating on global development projects. These are full exterior see-through models. These models allow the leadership to review the design direction at a particular time in the development process,” Paul said.

Korea is not the only country with an appetite for Holden Design expertise.

“We are relied upon by all divisions of GM. Showcars and concepts which the Australian Design team have developed through previous years have been delivered

for reveals at motor shows right around the world, including in cities such as Paris, Detroit, Chicago, Guangzhou as well as for local Australian shows.

“We’ve chiselled out a reputation with cars like the 2005 Efijy that went to Detroit Motor Show in 2007 and won Concept Car of the Year,” Paul said.

“When the Global Financial Crisis hit in 2008 it was a big turning point for us because work that had been outsourced in other regions was brought back in-house and we were the only studio outside of Detroit with the capacity to do it.”

Paul, who represented England at a model making showcase in France in 1995 began his career at Holden in 2000. It was an unexpected outcome from what was meant to be a short term holiday in Australia.

“I am really proud of what we have achieved. I’ve worked in different countries and Holden isn’t like anything you will experience anywhere else. This is like a family. It’s just incredible.

“I have a lot of respect for Mike Simcoe. He’s the ultimate professional and always pushing us. We are really only as good as our last job and we never do the same thing twice. It’s work that I love along with the challenge to always be relevant,” Paul said.

When did you take up this role?I officially started here on 12 August, so very recently.

What’s your background?I came here from my role as Area Manager of General Assembly at Holden Vehicle Operations in Adelaide. I am an engineer by degree. I made chips for McCains for a bit, built trucks at Kenworth, then came to Holden where I first worked in Finance. I’ve worked in Engineering, Manufacturing, vehicle development – the full gamut.

Do you call yourself a car guy?I am an operations guy, a general manager.

What is the scope of your role?I manage HEO where we work to produce 350 engines a day towards an annual target of 75-76,000 of a variety of high feature V6 engines.

What sort of engines does HEO make and where are they sold? They are predominantly the Spark Ignition Direct Injection (SIDI) variants, and also a Port Fuel Injection (PFI) variant, that go to Adelaide for Commodore. We also make a variety of engines that we export around the world – China, Korea, Thailand, Sweden, Mexico and Brazil.

What sort of skills do people at HEO have?We have engineers, industrial engineers, fitters, welders, electricians and people working in logistics and production. We are currently offering all our production people Certificate 3 training so they have an opportunity to gain a formal qualification for all of their experience.

HEO boasts a rich cultural diversity doesn’t it?Yes, we have 37 different cultures and nationalities here so it’s a very culturally diverse organisation.

What’s your biggest challenge in your new role?Confirming a direction for our future, whatever that future holds, and communicating our strategy clearly.

What has been the best part of this job so far?Meeting the new team. There are some really good quality people here. They are a proud and committed group and people have been very welcoming.

WHO DOES THAT?

Simon Armitt began life at Holden as a Durability Driver, putting new cars through their paces on the extensive circuit at the Proving Ground in Lang Lang.

Today the 25 year old Apprentice Mechanic has his eyes on some other tracks where he hopes to discover the full potential of his own much loved 1999 VT Club Sport.

“I am planning on going to some of the tracks; Winton, Sandown and Phillip Island

just to see what it can really do,” Simon said.

Performance was just one of the appealing characteristics that sent Simon hunting for his recent purchase.

“I have always loved the VT and I’ve had two of them. I just love the shape. I was looking for about six months and then this one came up on Gumtree. It’s pretty standard but I wanted the leather seats and

bigger brakes that will be important for track days, and they look good,” Simon said.

With just 58,000 kilometres on the clock the 14 year old car has many more roads to travel.

“I only drive it every second weekend if it’s a nice day. I want to keep it in original condition and have it long term. I have an Astra that’s my everyday car,” Simon said.

Holden lost a valued member of its family with the recent death of Robert William Holden, affectionately known as Bob. He was a direct descendant of James Alexander Holden who opened a saddlery business in Adelaide in 1854 and out of which Holden’s Motor Body Builders was established in 1919.

Bob began his career at GMH in 1949 and held a variety of senior positions in Australia and internationally before his retirement in 1987.

Former colleague and Holden Retirees Club representative for Materials and Purchasing, Ted Bryant remembers Bob with affection.

“I worked with Bob at Dandenong, where he was the Purchasing Manager, and then also later at Fishermans Bend,” Ted recalled.

“He was a thorough gentleman, a nice person and very easy to work with. Bob was a good mentor to the younger ones, a real peoples person and a company man to the heart,” Ted said.

“Our family watched all the touring car races, but Bathurst was always the race,” Rhett said.

“We would get up early, settle in with Dad and watch the race from start to finish, cheering Brocky and all the Holdens on. It was family tradition, as it still is for so many Australian families.”

“I have the video of Allan Grice and Win Percy’s 1990 Bathurst win, HRT’s first and I watch it over and over again,” Rhett said.

“It’s the race to win, motor racing’s Melbourne Cup. It’s the one race a year that non-motor racing fans follow and, like Garth [Tander] says, everyone knows who the winners are

when they walk down the street the next day.

“I still get goosebumps when we drive into Bathurst and I see Mt Panorama for the first time each year, and so do all the guys on the team. It’s that sort of place.

“To be part of an HRT Bathurst victory is very special, but to be part of two was a dream come true. But reminiscing is for when we retire and the success the team has had on the mountain only makes us even more hungry to win again and bring the Peter Brock Trophy back to HRT.”

Rhett was destined for a career in motorsport. The kid who loved the

assortment of flash cars his father, Graham, brought home from work at Holden is now an integral part of Australia’s most famous racing team.

“Dad started as an apprentice fabricator at Holden and ended up as National Fleet Service Manager. There were always nice new Holdens in the driveway,” Rhett said.

“Dad brought signed Peter Brock posters home and he even had a special letter, personalised by Brock, actually thanking him and all Holden employees. I found it recently, in perfect condition and it’s something I’ll always cherish.”

This month’s Bathurst 1000 ignites a fire and fuels flashbacks for HRT Marketing Manager, Rhett Beere.
