Holder for mounting a Camera on a Hang glider with the Magnetic

Mount System - Version 1.1

New small powerful camera systems, which are able to take pictures and videos, increase in the field of outdoor

sports. The compactness, ease of use and resistance to external influences of such a camera makes the perfect

companion for using these systems during our free flights. The construction of our gliders allows just a mounting on

the frame, like tubes, down tubes or the speedbar. The Drachenflugschule Kelheim developed and tested the

Magnetic Mount System for more than one year, also during raff flying conditions. This system makes it possible to fix

the camera without tools on practicable every position on the sail of the glider. The pictures and videos you are now

able to capture are still breathtaking. The innovative plug-in system is built on a modular basis. So you can mount

the camera on almost every imaginable position of the glider, with the equipment around the magnetic board, like

brackets, extension, ball joints or corners. The weight of the mounting components is made in a modern CAD system,

with the use of carbon fiber and aluminium are the parts as light as possible.

Some examples show the versatility of shots that can be done with it.

All images showed below are taken with a GoPro Hero 2 or Hero 3 camera and mounted with the respective holder

on the hang glider or micro light. All mounts are compatible and designed as a modular system. Thus gradually the

attachment of equipment can be expanded on the perspective.

After one year of testing could now appropriate materials and geometries for building up the support system. These

components are machined on modern CNC machines and been extensively tested and proven in the flying practice.

Set – Variants:

The MM-System can be ordered in different completed sets. It is also possible to increase the system with different

items and thus extend the relevant equipment. The sets are designed for a GoPro camera, if necessary, a suitable

adapter for other camera types can be made on request.

Principle of operation:

All components of the fastening system should be mutually compatible and interchangeable, so the systems can be

expanded with its individual components. Because of this requirement, all transitions of nuts, bolts or holes are

always normalized to the 10mm adapter. This 10 mm shaft can then arbitrarily, from accessories to be lengthened or

shortened. These transitions are always fixed with a M5 screw which transversely moves the thread of the inner part of

the inner diameter of the outer part, thus is a safe and easy to handle connection between the parts ensured. The

most complex component of the camera is the camera adapter itself. This element also has a 10mm bore, only with

this adapter it is possible to mount the GoPro camera.

Instruction Manual:

Several pictures show the functioning and the resulting capacity of the set's or the various components.

Set 1: The Magnetic board is out of two hand-made carbon fiber plates in which the sail is “tweaked in“. On top of the first plate a thread is laminated, therein is a M6- screwed 10 mm adapter. The bush allows the variable structure of the total length of the holder, depending on the length of the carbon fiber tube. So you can very easy change the distance from the camera to the sail. This bush is fixed on the board and also the carbon fiber tube with a screw. The GoPro Adapter is attached on the same way like the bush. The screw were you can apply the housing of the GoPro, is with two snap rings and one wing nut, wherein the camera can be further adjusted in angle. The rotation of the perspective of the whole magnetic board can be changed be rotating the whole board on the sail. As tool, you need just a hex wrench in the size Gr. 4 (but only if you want to change the length of the carbon fiber tube) The set can be attached in seconds to any position on the sail.

Set 2: The Velcro holder, which can be flexibly attached to any pipe, has a spherical head 360° rotatable and pivot able through 90°. With a plastic screw the actually position can be fixed firmly. The default photo thread at the upper end of the ball head is increased to 10 mm with an adapter so that the coupling bush can be screwed therein. Into the upper hole of the bush an arbitrarily long carbon fiber tube can then be attached. The top of the carbon fiber tube is in turn screwed into the adapter on the camera. The top screw with the two snap rings and the wing nut connecting the housing of the GoPro camera with the Velcro holder. The camera angle can be adjusted with the Camera Adapter. The rotation of the view can variably change with the rotation of the ball head. As tool, you need just a hex wrench in the size Gr. 4 (but only if you want to change the length of the carbon fiber tube) The set can be attached directly to each tube very quickly.

Set 3: The fragmentary of the pictures is in due to size of displayed pictures, they shows the connection of the carbon fiber tubes for the camera adapter and the other represents, the connection of the carbon fiber tubes for the aluminum arc. Here, the aluminum arc is attached to the extension in each case with a screw. The adapter of the camera is usual attached to the carbon fiber tube. As tool, you need just a hex wrench in the size Gr. 4. The set can be attached to any pipe in parallel with cable ties or by using the magnetic board on the sail. As perspectives you can realize awesome scenes behind, beside or in front of the pilot.

Warnings and protection:

Despite careful testing and sufficient strength, do always protect the camera with a safety robe or similar. If

the MM system is mounted on a micro light aircraft, it is important that the camera isn’t mounted under any

circumstances in the vicinity of the propeller. The system must be mounted so that even in case of a crash

the pilot didn´t injury or the equipment damage that may be caused by splinters or sharp edges. The pilot is

responsible for the secure attachment of the system. Before use, all parts needs a visual inspection and

functional test, damaged parts may no longer be used and must be replaced. The magnetic board should

attached to a stable position of the sail, preferably inclined in the vicinity of the fiber glass tip, the sprogs or

tips, on pitch lines or in the region of the keel tube. At high speeds, it is possible that the sail with the

magnetic board and the camera is flattering, therefore very high flight speeds should be avoided. The

Drachenflugschule Kelheim assumes no liability for any damages.

Use of the magnetic board:

- The magnetic board is nothing for children´s hands. The attraction of the magnets between the two

plates can hurt your hands or fingers. In general, caution should be exercised when handling the

board parts.

- Magnets can be dangerous for many devices and consumer devices. The strong magnetic field of

industrial magnets can damage screens, cell phones, hard drives, debit cards or direct contact with

the camera permanently. Risk of death may occur for people with a pacemaker.

- Magnets do not leave carelessly. Other fellow may unknowingly injured or damage equipment.
