2. Think about this: In Holes, Elya Yelnats breaks his promise to Madame Zeroni and so his descendants are cursed with bad luck. There are many other stories that involve curses. For example, in Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent is not invited to the princess’s birth, and so she curses the princess, saying the princess will prick her finger on her sixteenth birthday and fall asleep forever. Imagine a new curse for people who do something you don’t like. It could be a curse for people who mistreat animals, or who waste food, or who throw their garbage on the ground. In the box below, explain who your curse if for, and what sort of thing happens to them after they are cursed.

Think about Camp Green Lake’s philosophy: “If you take a bad boy and make him dig a hole every day in the hot sun, it will turn him into a good boy.” Respond to this quote by choosing one of the activities below to complete.
1. Write a letter to the Governor of Texas, arguing that Camp Green Lake is a bad (or good) idea. Explain why you disagree (or agree) with the camp’s philosophy.

2. Maybe you, like Stanley, have been accused of something you didn’t do. Were you punished? Or were you able to prove that you were innocent? Write a paragraph about this experience, and how it made you feel. (If you haven’t had an experience like this, you can write about someone you know.)
