Children need a road worthy bike, a cycle helmet that fits them and is up to EU standards, and must be able to ride their bike with confidence (for instance ride with one hand without due wobble). Bikes will be checked and any defects will need to be rectified before the next attendance.

The course includes road riding in traffic. There is also a theory test and some homework to be completed. Children must attend all lessons to gain the certificate. They will be awarded a gold or silver standard following their assessment. The gold certificate denotes excellent standard whereas the silver certificate requires adult supervision for road riding for a period of time.

Please dress accordingly as the course will go ahead whatever the weather. Children need to bring a small rucksack with a drink, snack and sun protection cream. Children should meet the instructors in the rear car park at Les Quennevais Sports Centre.

ABSOLUTE JERSEY 2013 17

Pure Adventure has been off ering locals and visitors fun-packed adventure for the best part of 10 years and continues to fi nd new and exciting activities each year. 2013 will be the year to try out Mountain Boarding, similar to skateboarding and snowboarding, but performed on grassy hillsides, with the emphasis on balance skills and manoeuvring without falling. Pure Adventure will continue to run Blo-Karting on windy days along the beach at Le Braye in St Ouen, which is popular for those who might consider Land Sailing as a stepping stone to sailing yachts out at sea. It is an exhilarating activity that can be learnt by children as young as 10 years old and can also be enjoyed by enthusiastic 50- to 60-year-olds. Jersey’s sheltered bays are ideal for a wide selection of watersport activities and sea kayaking, coasteering, fi shing and diving are a selection of the most popular on off er with Pure Adventure. If you are looking to challenge yourself on land, then rock climbing and abseiling would

be the perfect way to view Jersey’s rocky crags and cliff faces. Over the years, Island RIB Voyager, our sister powerboat company, has transported passengers across the sea to explore the off shore reefs of Les Ecréhous, Les Minquiers and Chausey, as well as the other Channel Islands of Sark, Guernsey and Herm. A trip on this 10 metre, high-speed Rigid Infl atable Boat combines the thrill of speeding through the waves at 35 knots, to slowing down and drifting by a pod of convivial dolphins playing close to the boat’s bow. There are very few experiences that can match that of seeing these beautiful mammals at such close proximity in their natural environment. If you are planning to book a group activity, clay pigeon shooting and paintballing are fantastic team sports that suit corporate incentive events and stag and hen parties. These activities off er a memorable day out and will be a talking point when back in the offi ce.

One of the best ways to discover Jersey’s countryside is to hire a bicycle and travel around the green lane network. Pure Adventure has a number of local cycle guides who can take you around the smaller paths and agricultural lanes ensuring you leave Jersey having learnt something of our Island’s history and having seen some amazing hidden properties. We pride ourselves in having Jersey-born instructors who love their island and share their expert knowledge and joy of the great outdoors with everyone who participates in the variety of activities available. All of our staff are qualifi ed in fi rst aid and have the relevant certifi cation required for the activities we off er.

The fun starts here......for every activity you can imagine, all in the stunning surroundings of Jersey’s unspoilt coastline

Senior Sailing Courses£64 per course. For 15 – 17 year olds.

Beginners will initially learn to sail using single-handed dinghies. Using single-handers allows students to learn at a faster rate, whilst giving them a tremendous sense of achievement. Sailing these small boats involves getting wet and capsize is inevitable, if not by accident, then during practice! However, safety boat cover is always at hand with qualified staff to help, when necessary. Getting wet is part of the fun for people and students always wear a buoyancy aid afloat, and where appropriate, a wetsuit, both of which we supply.

All training at the centre is under the supervision of an RYA Senior Instructor and directly controlled by RYA qualified instructors, who are trained powerboat operators and also hold First Aid certificates. Our courses are open to Jersey residents only. Not being able to swim does not exclude you from these courses, but you must declare it on your application form.

If you haven’t sailed a dinghy before, you should apply for a stage 1 course. If you already have the stage 1 certificate, or you have a fair bit of dinghy sailing experience, then apply for a stage 2 course. You can apply for more than one course providing you take them in the correct progressive order, i.e. stage 2 course before a stage 3 course, etc. However, it may be too ambitious to try to go from a stage 1 course to a stage 3 course in your first year. This course price does not include purchasing a logbook. You will find the logbook a useful aid to you training and these are available on the course, currently priced at £3.60. If you are successful in getting all sections of your logbook signed by your instructor you will be awarded a certificate. Although most people are successful in gaining their stage 1 certificate, as you progress through stage 2, stage 3 and beyond, you may not gain all the required skills during one short course to be awarded your certificate. Don’t worry, as this is not unusual and you can always complete it on another course. If you have not sailed since your last course, you may find it beneficial to repeat the course level before moving on.

What to bringA complete change of clothing including shorts, t-shirt, sweat shirt, swim wear, and old trainers or wet suit boots/crocs etc, (no flip flops) and a towel. A hat is also a good idea. We will provide a wetsuit when needed, but if you have your own, please bring it. We will also provide a buoyancy aid, but you may bring your own. You will also need to bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink, but avoid fizzy drinks. It is useful to take a small snack and bottle of water with you in the boat. Finally, make sure that you bring (and use) sun block, as you will burn very easily.

Where to meetInstructors will meet students for all sailing courses in front of the Royal Channel Islands Yacht club at St Aubin.
