PBS VALUES
Week 10: RESPECT
Put the rubbish in the bins
In public education, we value learning. We recognise the importance of how students learn in conjunction with the content that they learn. Success is not measured by the information that a student can recall. Rather, it is measured by their ability to use the information, experiences and skills gained over time and apply them in new and unfamiliar situations. It is for that reason we engage in the journey of education and strive to provide this outcome for all students regardless of gender, race, disability or religious background.
We recognise the positive impact and contribution that our teachers make in this journey for our students. From Year 7 through to Year 12, our teachers provide quality educational experiences in a safe and caring environment. Our priority of meeting the educational needs of our students is balanced by providing this instruction in conjunction with our core values of respect, safety and learning. It is with this holistic approach to learning that our students develop and ready themselves for not only their future studies and/or employment, but we prepare them to contribute as valuable members of our community and our country.
To this end we would like to thank the staff of Figtree High School, both Teaching and Administration, for their contribution to the successes that our Year 12 students have enjoyed and achieved. In particular, we would like to thank Ms Louise Dark (Year Advisor Years 7 to 10) and Mrs Margaret Parr (Year Advisor Years 11 and 12) for the commitment and guidance they have given this Year group during their 6 years of High School.
To Year 12, we wish you all the very best for your future endeavours. In all that you do, always give your very best. As you embark upon life beyond high school, embrace every challenge.
For life is learning and in life we do things we do not know how to do in order to learn how to do them.

Principal’s Report
The completion of Year 12 is a significant achievement that will be celebrated at Figtree High School on Friday 20
th
September during our graduation ceremony. The Higher School Certificate (HSC) is the highest award for secondary education in New South Wales and we are extremely proud of our 128 Year 12 students who will be graduating on Friday and completing their final examinations during October. Every student has been guided, shaped and developed by their 13 years of schooling to not only prepare them for their final examinations, but also equip them with the necessary skills required to be successful in an ever changing world. Whether it be in further studies or full time employment, students need to be prepared for the unknown; to have the capacity to face new challenges and successfully develop solutions.
HSC Examinations
Our Year 12 students are in the final days of their secondary education and we will formally recognise and congratulate
our Year 12 students and their parents this Friday at the graduation ceremony. The two week vacation period will provide
a great opportunity for Year 12 students to consolidate their learning, revise the content of courses and practice their
examination technique. Their final HSC examinations commence on 14th October. Students should ensure that they are
taking the advice and feedback from their class teachers into this final preparation period. The NSW Board of Studies
website is also an important HSC resource for students in their preparation: www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/hsc_exams
This link provides students with:
- Past HSC examination paper - The HSC Examination timetable, dates and events
- Examination equipment checklist - Examination rules and procedures for HSC students
The Board of Studies also has the NSW Students Online website: http://studentsonline.bos.nsw.edu.au/
Students can use their student number and pin to access their personalised HSC Examination timetable, a range of „tips
and tools‟, „past papers‟ and useful links including the „glossary of key HSC words‟ and „HSC Exam workbooks‟.
A new Figtree High School Cap is launched with Year 7
As September is the first month of spring, 5th September saw the launch of the Figtree High School Cap. This was an
initiative of the Figtree High School Parents and Citizen‟s (P and C) Association who have been working throughout this
year on the design and materials for a school hat that will provide students with protection from the sun during PE and
Sport, as well as during lunch breaks. The P and C funded the purchase of school caps for our Year 7 students, who
were given their school cap after the school assembly on 5/9/13. The school cap will become part of the school sport
uniform and will be available for purchase from the school. We thank the P and C for this new addition to the school
uniform. This is particularly timely as we head into the warmer months of the year, with many students making use of the
school ovals during lunch, and engaged in outdoor recreational sporting activities on Wednesdays during the peak UV
radiation period.
Figtree High School Core Values: Learning
NAPLAN 2013 Results
Our Year 7 and 9 students and their parents have been patiently awaiting the arrival of their NAPLAN results from the
literacy and numeracy tests that were completed back in May this year. These reports are usually distributed in the last
week of term 3. Unfortunately the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) has advised that
there will be a delay in the national distribution of NAPLAN Student Reports to schools due to an error detected by
ACARA in the printing of the students reports.
It is anticipated that the 2013 NAPLAN Student Reports will be delivered to schools across Australia from 8-11th October.
If this occurs, Figtree High School will distribute the 2013 NAPLAN Student Reports to Year 7 and 9 students in Term 4
Week 2, commencing 14th October.
Merit Award System
Gold Awards
Congratulations to Emma Keech, Kiana O’Hara and
Skye Oppio (Year 12), who have recently qualified for
their Gold Award. This is the highest award that can be
achieved in the school‟s merit system and means that
each of these students has presented 150 merits. These
merits provide evidence that the student has been
working to the best of her ability across a range of
subjects and that she has been prepared to be involved
in a range of extra-curricular activities such as special
sporting events, the school production and academic
competitions. Emma, Kiana and Skye have all been
awarded Principal‟s Awards and/or Year Adviser‟s
Awards, another demonstration of their consistent work
ethic. They have clearly demonstrated a commitment to
following the school‟s values of Respect, Safety and
Learning through earning PBS merits, 100% attendance
merits and offering their services to the school. These
students are all excellent role models and most
deserving recipients of this prestigious award. Well
done!
Congratulations to the following students who have
reached Silver or Bronze level in the school‟s merit
system during Term 3.
Silver:
Phoebe Palmer, Jessica Oates, Ebony Ireland,
Scott Borst, Genevieve Stone, Ana Djotunovic,
Riley Morgan and Sara Deroy (Year 12), Meghan
Fox and Madison Gruevska (Year 7).
Bronze:
Abby Churchin, Krystal Grogan, Rory Beniuk,
Jacob Davis, Campbell Fulcher, Ashleigh Jones,
Connor McMullen, Aiden Imber, Matthew Hobbs,
Rebecca Prstec, Daniel Maris, Emily McKinnon,
Daniel Moss and Emily Woods (Year7).
To be considered eligible for Bronze, Silver or Gold level
on the school‟s merit system a student must be able to
present the required number of merits (Bronze 15),
(Silver 45), (Gold 150). Students must also meet the
criteria of being cooperative and courteous and being
prepared to work to the best of their ability at all times.
A Bronze or Silver certificate allows students to
participate in merit reward excursions and can be a
valuable addition to a student‟s résumé. The merit
excursion for Term 4 will be to Jamberoo Action Park.
More information will be given about this excursion in
Term 4.
Students who have the required number of merits are
encouraged to apply for their Bronze, Silver or Gold
certificates. They can obtain an application form from
their Year Adviser or Ms Dive in the Languages
Staffroom.
PBS Draw
Congratulations to Michael Trajcevski (Year 12),
Gavin Smith (Year 10), Dylan Rower (Year 9),
Meghan Fox, Payton Williams, Connor McMullen
and Kayla Marras (Year 7) who each won either an 8
gigabyte thumb drive (very useful for assignments
etc!), an iTunes voucher or a $5 canteen voucher
because they had their RSL tickets drawn out on
assembly. RSL tickets are given to students who are
seen to be practising the school‟s values of Respect,
Safety and Learning. Students are encouraged to
drop their RSL tickets into the box in the
administration block so that they can be included in
the weekly prize draw. These tickets are also tallied
for each student and count towards earning merits for
Bronze, Silver or Gold Awards.
Korean Homestay Cultural Tour 2013
On 23 September, five students – Kimia Rahmannia
(Yr 8), Victoria Liddle, Victoria Pipino, Adam Mc
Keown (Yr 9) and Elise Oakman (Yr 10) will be
travelling to the Republic of Korea to experience life
in another culture with Mr Liddle and myself.
We will be visiting Seoul and surrounding places of
significance for 2 days before flying to Je Ju Island to
be hosted by our sister school, Je Ju National
University Middle School until we fly home on 2
October 2013. Students will be involved in daily life
and will visit many beautiful places while on the
island.
This is a great opportunity for these students and I
encourage you all to consider being part of this
program in 2014. We anticipate that students from Je
Ju will visit us in February 2014 and we will be
looking for families to host these students and be
involved in the organised activities.
There will be more news on our return.

NAIDOC Debating Challenge
On Monday 9th September, four students, Chloe Winch Year
9, Amy Soper Year 9, Brittney Angus Year 8 and Taranom
Rahmani Year 8 competed at the inaugural NAIDOC
Debating Challenge at Tarrawanna Public School. The topic
debated was „Should Aboriginal people have more say over
Crown Land – Mining Rights?‟ In this debate the girls had to
argue as the opposition, which is clearly the more
challenging stance.
The affirmative team debating against Figtree High were also
a group of older, more experienced debaters; however, the
girls were confident and articulate. Our team lost by only 2
points, scoring 254 out of a possible 300 points. Comments
made by the adjudicator and teachers with extensive
debating experience were that, „our students had clearly
engaged in extensive research of the topic, their speeches
were well-structured and they presented themselves in an
expressive and professional manner.‟ Keira and Corrimal
High Schools drew for the wining position.
Our girls look forward to competing again next year and
gaining more debating experience in the near future.
Congratulations to Chloe Winch, Amy Soper, Brittney Angus
and Taranom Rahmani for having the confidence to engage
in a new and challenging experience and for representing the
school as a cohesive team.

Figtree High School Uniform
Summer Uniforms
With the warmer weather already arriving, we seek our
parents support in ensuring that students are dressed
appropriately in the Figtree High School uniform. Lowes
at Westfield Figtree and Poppets Direct at Fairy
Meadow are the suppliers of our school uniform.
Students may well have grown over the winter months
and as such, new purchases or adjustments to uniforms
may be necessary over the holiday period. We would
like to remind our girls, in particular, about the school‟s
policy regarding the length of skirts and school shorts.
The minimum length is mid-thigh, which can be easily
identified when students extend their arms and hands
by their sides. The fingertips will indicate mid-thigh
location. The skirts and shorts available from our school
uniform suppliers meet our school uniform policy
regarding length.

Yr10 History “Vietnam War”
Performance
On Tuesday 3rd
September, Year 10 History students
had the opportunity to further enhance their
understanding of the Vietnam War which they have
been studying in class. The students were impressed
with the performance given by Brett Hunt, son of
Frankie Hunt, a Vietnam Veteran whose story was the
basis of Redgum‟s famous song “I was only 19”. Brett
Hunt gave an incredible performance that combined
music, sound effects, dialogue and the story of his
father‟s experience in the Vietnam War. It was a very
moving performance that sent shivers down our spine!
Brett Hunt commended the Year 10 students on their
exceptional behaviour during the performance and for
their participation during the Q&A session. They were
great ambassadors for the school and demonstrated
keen interest and maturity during the performance.
Well done, Year 10!

ACE Showcase 2013
On Tuesday 27th August, the annual ACE Showcase was
held in front of an audience of parents, teachers and
special guests. ACE is the Academic Challenge and
Excellence program that is designed for gifted and
talented students from Yrs 7-10. Students are required to
identify a problem within a topic of their choice and
conduct primary and secondary research to develop a
series of solutions or recommendations for their problem.
As part of the primary research component, students had
to interview an ‘expert’ in their chosen field.
The ACE students had the opportunity to interview a wide
range of people from across Australia including professors
from numerous universities as well as published authors
and scientists. The ACE students presented their findings
during a showcase of their work where they were required
to present a speech as well as a visual presentation.
The students did an incredible job and their presentations
demonstrated their sophisticated understanding of the
topics explored. There was a wide range of topics
researched this year including sweatshops, factory
farming, preservation of Aboriginal languages, local live
music, participation in sport and video gaming in
education.
Congratulations to the following students who
presented their final projects during the ACE Showcase:
Year 7 – Gabrielle Livingston, Jamie Kuzman, Tiffanie
Doan, Kaitlin Hearne, Jacinta Carson, Payton
Williams, Jade Gray, Madison Gruevska
Year 8 – Andrew Watson, Michael Oakman, Kimia
Rahmannia, Ben Hubert, Czarina Jermyn, Saumya
Sharma, Lloyd Kellerman
Year 9 – Myah Howard
Year 10 – Jason Rees, Amy Pryor, Elise Oakman
I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of the
Teacher Mentors who played an important role
providing additional support and guidance for the ACE
students. Special thanks to Ms Wood, Mr Simmonds,
Ms Dark, Mrs McEwan and Mr Denner.

Bill Turner Cup Quarter Final
As previously reported, Figtree High‟s Under 15 Boys
Soccer team were very successful this year, reaching the
Quarter Finals in this prestigious competition.
Our opponents were last year‟s champions – Melbourne‟s
Maribyrnong College – a specialist sports selective college,
and a pretty serious challenge! As it happens, Maribyrong‟s
coach is an ex-Figtree High student who played for the
school in a Bill Turner Cup final in the 1980‟s (and later
played in the National Soccer League I think…). An
illustration of Figtree‟s long pedigree at this level of sport!
We headed off to Wodonga on Thursday afternoon, spread
between several parent‟s cars (and Mr McGavock‟s „truck‟
for the lucky ones!?). Comfortable, if basic, lodgings in
cabins at Wodonga and pizzas for dinner constituted a
fairly relaxed evening for the team. Special thanks go to
Mr Brodnik in particular for his efforts in transporting and
feeding the boys, and to the other parents who travelled
down to support the team.
Friday morning, match day, dawned cold and crisp. After
breakfast (at the golden arches for most…) and some time
in Albury, it was match time! The Maribyrnong boys were
well drilled, as expected, however Figtree matched them
well. A tight first half saw numerous attacks by Figtree
blunted by the Maribyrnong defence, then a sudden
counter attack (with questions being asked about offside),
saw a sharp finish. Figtree had managed ten shots on goal
to two, but we went to half-time one-nil down.
The second half started with Figtree on the attack again,
but the outstanding opposition goalkeeper kept making
brilliant saves to keep his team in the match. When
refereeing decisions did not go our way we were unable to
adjust our play accordingly. An unfortunate send off was
followed by a second Maribyrnong counter attack and goal.
The game then deteriorated and some of the Figtree team
unfortunately did not fight to the finish. The competition
ended for us with a 2-nil scoreline. Throughout this
competition I have felt that this Figtree team had the
potential to go all the way. The test of a champion team,
however, is how they lift when the chips are down.
Unfortunately, we were shown up in this area.
Maribyrnong went on to finish fourth overall in the Cup. We
headed home with the feeling that we let a big chance slip
by. That‟s the nature of sport, hopefully we all learnt from
the experience! I would like to finish by congratulating the
boys on a fantastic campaign. It is always good to knock
over our local rivals – Keira HS and Edmund Rice, and
great to get all the way to the quarter finals. We well
deserve our status as South Coast Champions 2013!
The team: Jarrod Twigg, Chris Popovski, Justin
Jauleski, Joshua Mears, Ethan Kambisios, Daniel
Lucas, Evan Balatsos, James Solevski, Nathan
Turner, Emmanuel Kamara, Nathan Vaughan, Deon
Jauleski, Kieran Brodnik, Kristijan Vicoroski, Adam
Bassuni, Addison Gillespie.

Stan Jones Tennis State Finals – West Wyalong
A huge congratulations to Jason Bloomfield, Haydn
Hunt, Jayden Smileski & Blayne Sawyer who
competed in the Stan Jones Tennis State Finals in
West Wyalong on the 9th-11
th September.
The boys beat Parkes HS in the opening round &
came up against Westfields Sports High in the
second round. Unfortunately, they lost this match 4
sets to 2 but went on to compete in the consolation
draw.
In the semi-finals, the boys competed against Farrah
High School in gale force winds & it came down to the
wire as the match was even after the singles rounds.
Fortunately, the wind didn‟t bring down their spirits &
they went on to win both reverse doubles & the
match.
The following day, the sun was shining, the wind was
at bay & the team was ready for action – Grand final
between Figtree & Albury. After a sketchy start, the
boys picked up their game & went on to win the
match (5 sets to 3) & a bronze CHS medal.
A special mention to Haydn & Blayne who were on a
doubles winning streak & only dropped one set in the
very last match.
This outstanding result meant Figtree High School
came 5th in the State out of nine teams. All boys should
be proud of their achievement and the standard of
tennis they produced over the two day carnival.
Congratulations on behalf of everyone at Figtree High
School. We acknowledge the financial support of the
Figtree High P and C who funded our team‟s shirts for
the event and thank them for this support.
