The holidaysare the most festive time ofthe year, and no holiday season is complete without a
party or two with family and friends. Be it to celebrate
a religious holiday or to ring in the New Year, a holi-
day party is an essential element to the holiday season.
While its always great to be a guest, hosting a holiday
party is a great way to show friends and family how
much they mean to you. This holiday season, considerthe following tips to ensure your holiday party is as
memorable as the season is merry.
Make it a themed party. The holiday season is filledwith festivities, from office parties to neighbor-
hood gatherings to gatherings with family. For more
casual affairs, set your party apart with a theme. For
example, a Christmas sweater party, where each
guest wears a Christmas sweater, can be a fun way to
excite guests and inspire a few laughs. Give a prize
to the guest with the most ornate sweater. If sweatersarent your thing, then encourage guests to dress up
like some favorite holiday characters, including Santa
Claus, Frosty the Snowman or even Rudolph.
Dont forget the holiday fare. Just like parties are astaple of the holiday season, so, too, are certain foods
and types of music. Few people indulge in some
eggnog outside of the holiday season, so make sure
theres plenty of eggnog on hand. And dont forget
the gingerbread cookies, either. As people enjoy
holiday goodies, make sure they do so with holiday
music playing in the background. Choose songs that
guests know and to which they can sing along. Such
sing-alongs might become especially memorable
once guests have a glass or two of eggnog in them.
Host a holiday giveaway. Though it can be fun todo a Secret Santa, chances are guests already have
enough gifts to buy. But hosts can spice things up
with a holiday giveaway that rewards guests. Host a
holiday-themed round of Trivial Pursuit or a holiday
movie trivia game that encourages guests to compete
for prizes. Prizes can be small and inexpensive, but
guests will be sure to enjoy some friendly competi-
tion for holiday-themed prizes.
Dont be afraid to take it outside. For those who live
in regions with significant snowfall, consider invitingguests outside to have some fun in the snow. While
fun in the snow is often left to the kids, dont assume
adults wont enjoy building some snowmen or a

good old fashioned snowball fight in the backyard. If
outdoor fun is going to be on the docket, be sure to
remind guests to dress appropriately. And make sure
theres plenty of hot chocolate ready once everyone
goes back inside to warm up.
Prearrange transportation home for guests.A successful holiday party is one that is safe, so be
sure to prearrange travel home for guests just in case
anyone overindulges in holiday cheer. When sending
out invitations, seek volunteers to be designated driv-
ers, and avoid drinking alcohol yourself.
For larger parties, call a local taxi service and arrange
for a couple of cabs to be on call when the party ends.

Dutiful but dull, toys intended toenrich a child once sat at the topof adults shopping lists and thebottom of the toy box. No more.Creativity, play value and green cre-dentials combine in some ofthe seasons best bets.
Speed racer:The durable wooden Giant VintageSports Car by Vilac
Somewhereon the spectrum between tech-no-dazzle (iPad apps for toddlers, anyone?) and fuzzy-
wuzzy bears theres a sweet spot: toys that inspire kids to
have fun, stretch their creativity and learn while they play.
With a little effort and some guidance from savvy toy
shop owners any attentive shopper can hit the mark.
Toys that encourage the most beneficial play may not be
the biggest spotlight-grabbers. Their attractions are often
more subtle and require a shopper to search past the danc-
ing dolls massed out in aisle one.
Toys today, especially toys in the mass market, you push
a button and it does something it lights up or it sings or it
turns around and does all kinds of things. But theyre nottoys that allow a child to be imaginative and creative, says
Jennic Law, owner of KangarooBoo toy store. The child
is playing and having a good time, but the toy is doing
most of the actions or thinking for him or her.
Law says classic problem-solving toys like puzzles and
blocks are much better for children. She likes boldly col-
ored Green Toys Blocks ($25, 6 months and up), which
are made from recycled plastic milk containers and come
in many shapes.
Wendy Lippman, owner of Tlaquepaque Toy Town, seeksout toys that spur open-ended play. I like toys where kids
are encouraged to use their imagination, she says. Lippman
recommends toys that can serve as the focus for role-playing,
where kids can act as cashiers or shoppers with a toy cash
register, for example. Such toys also set up scenarios to edu-
cate children, she says.
Science-related toys are no longer aimed at little Leonar-
dos and can be packed with fun, says Jim Davis, owner of
Kids Center toy store. Toys with magnets easily combine
science learning with fun. The popular Discovery Setof magnetic blocks from Tegu ($70, age 3 and up) snap
together and hang in balance, a perfect gift to spark the
imagination of young children.

Science kits from Thames & Kosmos are perennial award-
winners. The Remote-Control Machines set ($70, age 8 and
up) lets kids build 10 different motorized vehicles (includ-
ing bulldozer, crane, Formula One racer, three-blade dozer,
robotic arm) and then guide them with a remote control unit.
After following the instructions to construct the standard
vehicles, kids can invent their own.
Try re-imagining books as toys. Theres a jillion different
topics for books, Davis says. You just need to know a little
bit about the child and then pick out the appropriate story
book. Press Here is the title and also the instruction for the
new book by Herv Tullet that launches young readers on a
charming adventure. Watch them blow, tilt, shake, rub and
tap colorful dots printed on the page to make them multiply,
grow and rearrange themselves (Chronicle, $15, ages 4-8).
KangarooBoos Law advises avoiding electronic educa-
tional and leisure toys for age 5 and under. If [children]are able to sit down and solve a problem or a puzzle or
build something, it makes
the foundation for them as
a person, she says. She
also says toys that involve
physical play help children
develop fine motor skills,
gross motor skills, patience
and other mental capacities.
Fastrack, a new board game
by Blue Orange, pits oppo-nents who twang elastic
cords to send wooden disks
shooting across the board
and through a narrow slot.
The first to get all 10 to the
other side wins ($20, age 5
and up).
To get kids up off the couch
and develop their physical
well-being, Davis suggestsnew classic toys for out-
doors, such as jump ropes
and sports balls, and new
throw toys, including Rhino
Toys SkyO, a flexible fly-
ing ring thats easy to catch
and throw ($8, age 3 and
up). The Z-Curve Bow
from Zing Toys launches
foam arrows a satisfyinglylong way ($20, age 8 and
up).

Shesgot it all a TV show, restaurants, cookbooks and product lines.Whatever Paula Deen dishes out, she does it
with that down-home style unique to onlyher. We caught up with Deen to chat about
her plans for the holidays and how she bringsher signature style to seasonal dcor.
Although her brand has expanded to encom-pass many products, food is still at the center
of Deens universe. This is apparent from theway she talks about Christmas dinner at her
house. Thirty of her closest family membersand friends share an enormous home-cooked
meal, which features beef, ham, turkey andside dishes galore. Dessert includes ambrosia
with cream sauce, coconut cake, red velvet
cake and Japanese fruit cake.
Her Southern style extends to the decorationsin her home, which are as charming as thefood. A 15-foot fake tree stands in her living
room while three real trees decorate her bed-room, kitchen foyer and game room.
Deen is a big fan of natural decorations thatcan tickle more than one of the senses. We
pull most of the things we use out of the yard, and I love using real food to decorate the
mantel, she says. Her must-have decoration is a homemade
apple tree. You can buy little wooden trees with nailssticking out to place the apples on, then you
put greenery in between all the apples and apineapple on top. Its gorgeous and real and
smells absolutely amazing.
Deen brought her design sensibilities to her
own line of furniture from Universal Furni-
ture: the Paula Deen Home Collection. Sherecently added 42 pieces to the original
50-piece collection.
My furniture screams, Yall come on in and
get comfortable, she says. It wraps its armsaround you when you walk into a room. Its
homey, yet elegant, and each piece has style, value and is affordable.
Some furniture pieces are inspired by Deens
own furniture, and some are named after fam-ily members. But Deens favorite piece is the
Bag Ladys Cabinet from the lines firstseries. I love utilitarian things. Other than
just being pretty, I like for them to have a pur-pose, she says. This particular piece has a
glass top and drawers underneath, and can beuseful in any room.
Comfort, family and purpose are threethemes that describe her furniture and her
holiday entertaining style.
The purpose part is particularly importantduring Christmas. While Deen says she loves
the holiday, she doesnt like the hectic feelingof choosing the right gifts for everyone. To
her, the meaning of Christmas is giving backto those less
fortunate.
Last year, Deens family and friends began
giving gifts to needy families rather than each
other. They even personally delivered thegifts on Christmas Eve.
It reminded us all what Christmas is reallyabout, she says.
I cant wait to do it again.

ChewersIf you have a chewer, its integral that you find the type of toy
that can withstand that kind of abuse, says Shaw. Dont skimp
on cheap toys that can easily tear apart. Instead, buy a heavy-duty
toy that can endure tough teeth. Animal trainer and pet expert
Diana L. Guerrero recommends the Kong Co.s super-duty
hollow rubber toys. The Kong Extreme toy, used by police and
drug enforcement and specially made for aggressive chewers,
can be filled with treats to help reduce boredom (available in
five sizes, $5 and up, specialty local pet stores). Brightly colored
twists, flyers, hurleys and hucks from West Paw Design are made
of Zogoflex, a durable, pliable material thats easy for a pet to pick
up and wont hurt teeth ($9 to $17, specialty stores).Other toys for chew-happy canines: bones and tugs made
of tightly twisted cotton threads, which clean teeth while t
he pup chews and plush toys for dogs who like to mother
a toy. Nylabone hard nylon dog chews in a range of shapes
and flavors last longer than rawhide bones and promote
tooth health. A bacon-flavored DuraChew comes in the
shape of a hollow stick ($12, specialty local pet stores).

Products that appeal toan animals intuitiveside, engaging them andencouraging naturalactivity, also are trendy.Foraging toys are hot, says

A basic wooden basket
takes center stage whenloaded with holiday staples
BasketCASE
Aunique and inexpensive holi-
day centerpiece can be as
easy as putting all your eggs
in a basket, so to speak. Bas-
kets are useful as both organizational and
decorative accessories. In December,
when embellished with holiday staples
such as fresh fruits, gift tags, ribbon, ever-
greens, firewood or presents, they also
can double as centerpieces for living
rooms and dining rooms.
The beauty of baskets is that once you
decorate them, they give you a lovely holi-
day feel, says Flora Brown, a professional
gift basket decorator. In some cases, you
dont even need a tree, because you can
build a large basket as tall as you want.
Shirley George Frazier, author of The
Gift Basket Design Book (Globe Pequot,
2008), says that decorative baskets are
often used as gifts and have stood the test
of time. Their appeal is their simplicity.
To create a decorative basket, Frazier sug-
gests starting with a basket of any color
and size with a sturdy wood frame. The
basket should be smooth on all sides aswell as on the bottom and the handle.
When placed on the floor, a well-made
basket sits flat and doesnt wobble, she
adds. A few coats of spray paint can give it
some holiday color.
Brown says that the most important tip is
to fill the basket so that whatever sits
inside is raised high and positioned well.
Once a foundation is established, the
opportunities are endless.
Here are some basic ideas for baskets as
holiday dcor.
GIFT BEARER
Use a large, elongated basket to display
and collect the wrapped family gifts. Use
real or artificial greenery inside and wrap
battery-operated lights throughout the
design. Depending on the size, the basket
can be placed by the fireplace or on top of
a coffee table against a wall.
ENTRANCE GREETER
Fill a large, curved basket with greenery,
silver balls of various sizes and floral
sprigs. Attach the greenery tightly to the
basket so that additional ornaments and
bells can be wired to it. Place in the foyer
or near the front door for guests to admire.
FOOD CARRIER
Select a basket with a flared-over handle
and decorate the edges with painted cones
or artificial greenery. Line the bottom
with paper. Fill with either fresh food that
can be served immediately, such as fruit
and cheese, or with dried items that can
linger longer at the table. Holiday favor-ites for food baskets include fruit cake,
nuts, cookies, jams, chocolate and wine.
