PLAY/SCULPTURE: EXPLORING NOGUCHI WITH THE PORTLAND CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVALPortland Museum of Art | 7 Congress Square | November 16
Portland Chamber Music Festival has commissioned a new work by Japanese-American cellist and composer Paul Wiancko, inspired by the sculpture of Isamu Noguchi, subject of the Portland Museum of Art's fall exhibition. Wiancko's piece (for the highly unusual combination of two violas and two cellos) adds a musical complement to Noguchi’s restless creativity and the concept of “playing” with shapes and colors in space. Ensemble includes Melissa Reardon (Artistic Director, PCMF) and Ayane Kozasa, violas; Raman Ramakrishnan and Paul Wiancko, cellos.
"Beyond the Pedestal: Isamu Noguchi and the Borders of Sculpture" is a rare Maine retrospective of Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988), the Japanese-American artist who became a central figure in the development of 20th-century American modernism, and is on exhibition through January 6, 2019.

ALISON HILDRETH: FLIGHT SPEEDWELL projects | 630 Forest Avenue | Artist Talk November 15 @ 6pm
FLIGHT is a solo exhibition by Alison Hildreth featuring a dynamic array of the artist's work. Her practice interweaves philosophy, history, cartography, and literature into a mix of art, science, and metaphor. Come see this master artist's latest show that SPEEDWELL is so excited to present. We will be open until 8pm for November's First Friday and will also be having an artist talk with Alison Hildreth on November 15th from 6-8pm.
After graduating from Vassar College with a BA in Art History, Hildreth worked in New York and went to night school at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Art. Hildreth then moved to Maine where she continued her studies in studio art and graduated from Maine College of Art in 1976. She taught for a number of years as a non-resident instructor at Maine College of Art, Vermont College, and Lesley University. Hildreth's studio is currently located at the Bakery Studios at 61 Pleasant Street. Her practice includes mixed media drawing, painting, printmaking, and installation work. Her work is included in numerous collections and has been featured in exhibitions nationally and internationally.

The cold air monster is here and elections are coming
up soon. Vote for arts advocates to support the creative
economy. Creativity leads to connectivity and productivity.
Creative minds make the world a better place. Your daily
advocacy and support for the arts makes a huge difference.
The U.S. Senate voted in favor of an increase for the NEA
last August, including $155 million for both the National
Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment
for the Humanities. We are proud that Portland's own
Congresswoman, Chellie Pingree, now serves as the Co-
Chair of the Arts Caucus. Mark your calendars to join
Americans for the Arts for Arts Advocacy Day as part of
the National Arts Action Summit on March 4-5, 2019! It's
that time of year when we are reaching out for donations to
Creative Portland so we can continue to be a clearinghouse
of information and support for the arts & cultural life of
Portland. It's hard to believe that Thanksgiving is around
the corner. Please stop by Creative Portland at 84 Free
Street for an open house visit at Monday Morning Drop By,
November 5, from 8:30-9:30am. We look forward to sharing
and hearing your ideas!
- Dinah Minot, Executive Director
